Israeli President says anti-Semitism
in Europe is increasing
Deutsche Presse-Agentur
Riga - Israeli President Moshe Katsav, currently on a visit to Latvia,
Tuesday mourned the death of Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal, and warned
that anti-Semitism was rising in some parts of Europe.
Katsav said Wiesenthal was "one of the biggest fighters of this
generation".
The Israeli president also called for government action to stem a rise
in anti-Semitism in Europe, and urged legislation and public dialogue.
Katsav however added that he was satisfied with the Latvian governments
actions in teaching a "new generation human values".
Earlier, Katsav had discussed economic cooperation with his Latvian
counterpart Vaira Vike-Freiberga.
Katsav was scheduled to meet with the local Jewish community, visit a
Holocaust site, and attend a ceremony honoring locals who saved Jewish
lives during the Holocaust.
In the Estonian capital Tallinn on Monday, Katsav laid a foundation
stone for the first synagogue since World War II, and visited with the
local Jewish community.
After his stay in Latvia Katsav will also visit Lithuania in what is the
first ever visit by an Israeli president to the three Baltic states.
More than 90 percent of Latvia's pre-war Jewish population of some
70,000 Jews perished in the Holocaust as well as many as another 20,000
foreign Jews that were brought to the Baltic state from other countries.
