Ukraine steps up army modernization

KHARKIV, Ukraine, -- Ukraine's prime minister pledged Monday to boost the funding of army modernization programs by 60 percent, Interfax news agency said.

Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych, who is one of the top two candidates running to succeed President Leonid Kuchma in Ukraine's presidential election at the end of this month, said military reforms and the modernization of the former Soviet republic's armed forces were priority objectives of his government.

Yanukovych told the staff of the 61st mechanized battalion in Chuguyev that protecting and improving social security for servicemen in the armed forces was also a priority objective during the reform program.
