Blair calls for 'buffer force' to calm Mideast crisis
Monsters and Critics

London - Britain's Prime Minister Tony Blair Tuesday called for 'some sort of buffer force' between Lebanon and Israel after the current crisis has been stabilized.

Speaking in parliament in London, Blair said: 'We can and must stabilize the situation. The present crisis has far-reaching consequences for the region, for the whole world and even for countries like ours.'

There needed to be a 'buffer force to ensure we do not get the same problem breaking out again.'

He believed there had been a 'deliberate act of strategy' to make sure that the present conflict was widened, added Blair, without elaborating further on his remark.

Earlier Tuesday, a spokesman for Blair confirmed that the Prime Minister currently had no plans to visit the Middle East for possible mediation.

He said that now plans had been announced for US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to visit the region, there were no plans for Blair to do so.

The spokesman was answering questions from journalists about an offer by Blair to US President George W Bush that he (Blair) should have talks with governments in the region.

Blair indicated his readiness in the by now notorious private exchange with Bush during the St Petersburg G8 summit which both men erroneously believed was taking place in front of switched-off microphones.

Blair is heard saying: '...As I say I am perfectly happy to try and see what the lie of the land is, but you need that done quickly because otherwise it will spiral.'

Bush replies: 'I think Condi is going to go pretty soon.'

Blair says: 'Well...it's only if I mean...you know. Because obviously if she goes out, she's got to succeed, as it were, whereas I can go out and just talk.'

Blair would be speaking to other leaders while Britain's Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett would be in close touch with her Israeli counterpart, Blair's spokesman said.
