'Temple Mount attack could foil
pullout' By YAAKOV KATZ An attack on the Temple Mount has the potential to thwart the implementation of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's Gaza Strip disengagement plan, Deputy Internal Security Minister Yaacov Edri warned Thursday. Police, Edri said, have recently stepped up their presence on the Temple Mount out of fear that Jewish and Muslim extremists might perpetrate an attack, which, he warned, would create for Israel an unprecedented international crisis. "If there is a large-scale attack on the Temple Mount the [disengagement] plan would be in danger," Edri told The Jerusalem Post. "Therefore the police are not taking any chances and are doing all they can to prevent such an attack. The Shin Bet, Edri said is currently watching over several right-wing Jewish extremists it suspects might be planning an attack on the Temple Mount. "Police have stepped up their presence to prevent anything unusual from happening on the Temple Mount that might create a crisis," Edri said. "The moment the information turns concrete and the threat real we will consider using preventive measures such as administrative detention." Edri said that some of the scenarios police are preparing for include an attack on the compound by air or a suicide bombing at the entrance to one of the mosques. "The closer we get to the disengagement plan the more the threats will grow and become real," Edri said. "We are preparing for scenarios of crazy people shooting or throwing grenades at the mosques or of people launching an airborne strike." On Tuesday Edri met with the Knesset Finance Committee and asked for an NIS 61 million supplement to the police force's budget for Temple Mount security. The money, he said, would be used to purchase new advanced technological means that would be installed around the compound. On Monday, far-right activist Noam Federman warned of a growing desire among certain individuals to execute a terror attack on the Temple Mount. "No one wants the mosques there," Federman said. "But people are torn between the desire to bring them down and the fear that if they are destroyed the Muslims will build more beautiful mosques in their place." |
