UNITED STATES OF EUROPE...
by Garner Ted Armstrong A furor ensued recently when German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder presented his blueprint for a United States of Europe. The reaction in Britain was particularly hostile. Britain has not yet joined with the other 12 nations in accepting the common currency, the Euro. Interestingly enough, the Swedes, Danes and Finns are also cool to the German Chancellor's proposals. I have been predicting the eventual creation of a "United States of Europe" for more than 45 years on radio and television, in many articles and in major booklets. Continually, I have emphasized that the eventual "Beast" power which is prophesied to emerge will not grow gradually out of the present 15-nation configuration, which includes nations I believe are part of the so-called "lost ten tribes of Israel." Those nations include Britain, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Holland, Belgium, and northern France. For decades, I have predicted that Britain would NOT be a part of the final ten nations which will form. Now, with the German Chancellor wanting to hurry the process of developing a European Superstate, with Germany playing the pivotal role, Britain is appalled. Schroeder's blueprint for Europe will be presented to the Social Democratic Party in Germany at its annual convention in November of this year. A spokeswoman for the party said "The document has not been discussed by the party's committee, and it is not yet public material." However, one of the leading weekly news magazines in Germany, Der Spiegel, reported on Schroeder's plan, which was described as laying the foundations for what the most ardent integrationists see as "an eventual United States of Europe." Also, the proposal is "meant to advance a postwar dream of European political unification and reflects Berlin's efforts to carve a greater German leadership role in Europe," according to EU analysts. What Happens To National Sovereignty? Always, the question arises, "Who will lead?" If a super state is formed from a coalition of smaller states, who would be the President of such a super state? How would he be chosen? Nationalism, xenophobia, religion, language and culture have all divided Europe for many centuries. Europe has been the hotbed of wars from time immemorial. It is because the entire world suffered through two World Wars, both begun in Europe, that the nations of this space-age, nuclear-armed world have wanted to find a formula which guarantees Europe will never again plunge the rest of the world into a global war. But have the French really forgotten how the Germans swept into their country twice in the last century? Have the Poles, Czechs, Belgians, Dutch, Danes, Norwegians, Hungarians, Bulgarians, Rumanians and other victims of German aggression truly forgotten? Are all old feelings of patriotism and nationalism suddenly dead? Consider the case of the United Nations. One of the greatest weaknesses of the vaunted "United Nations," that hollow shell of the world's "last hope for peace" on the East River in New York City, is the inability of the UN to elect as its Secretary General anyone from one of the Big Powers. Why? Obviously, because the world was divided East and West for about five decades following World War II. NATO faced off against the "Warsaw Pact" nations under Soviet domination, and the Cold War dragged on for decades, as the two major super powers, the United States and the Soviet Union, struggled for supremacy. The UN replaced the flawed "League of Nations" which sought to insure peace after World War I. In fact, the seeds of the next great global conflict were present in the founding charter of the League. For its entire lifetime, the UN has never dared to suggest that an ambassador from The United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia or China be elected. Instead, it has elected its Secretaries General from places like Iceland, Austria, or third-world states in Africa. Because of the Cold War and the tensions which still exist between the US and Russia, between Britain and Germany, between the US and China, and many, many other philosophical, political, cultural and religious conflicts, the UN has had to remain a toothless tiger. Now, with Schroeder's plan, the many heads of state of Europe, including Britain, have been issued a stark warning. Since creating a United States of Europe would mean structuring such a body along the lines of a so-called "democratic" nation, or so the Germans claim at this present time, Schroder wants it structured like Germany's upper and lower houses. Can you imagine the various heads of state suddenly reduced to the role of a "senator" in a super government, having only one vote in a body which would begin to legislate over the nation represented by the "senator"? For this is basically what the German Chancellor wants. Can you envision the French President, or the British Prime Minister stepping down from their exalted offices in their own country, and taking their place among the fifteen other heads of state as part of a legislative body under a "President" of such a super state? Obviously, a new super-government would dilute and supercede the various national governments. The present EU Council of Ministers is accused of being "secretive," since its various members meet behind closed doors. Schroeder wants it to meet in open legislative chambers. Thus, the Council would become a central government for fifteen states. Schroeder wants the body to become the "second chamber of parliament," which he claims would "safeguard national sovereignty and protect the interests of member states." A leading London newspaper said the Schroeder plan has "appalled" Britons, saying the plan envisages "...a superstate with its own unelected ministers, its own indirectly elected president and a two-chamber parliament with full control over public spending." Observers say Schroeder is trying to project himself as a "visionary" leader in advance of elections next year. However, in the long term, the Germans want a much larger role in a more closely united Europe. Continually, they point out they are the largest state, and the biggest contributor to EU funds. Long ago, the late Franz Josef Strauss, former Defense Minister of Germany and head of the Christian Socialist Union of Bavaria, told me that Germany must eventually exercise political power commensurate with its industrial and economic power. You should be watching developments in Germany and Europe. It is in the heartland of Europe where the so-called "Holy Roman Empire" held sway, and it was in Rome where the fundamental structure of a future united Europe was decided upon. The eventual "Beast" power will not come about as a gradual develop-ment during a world at peace, but most likely in the aftermath of a global economic collapse. When that happens, the "conspiracy" theorists will have a heyday. The Germans will once again seek a scapegoat not only the United States, but likely the British, and the "Jewish Bankers." And Now GERMANY
WANTS THE ROYAL AIR FORCE by Garner Ted Armstrong The British, always chary of Germany, have another reason to be wary. Recently, the German Ministry of Defense has called for a unified Air Transport Command the branch of the future united European Army which would be responsible for air lifting tanks, armored vehicles, helicopters, troops and supplies to trouble spots anywhere on the globe. This "rapid reaction force" will operate outside of NATO. However, Britain's Prime Minister, Tony Blair, has continually reassured the British that any European Army would operate under NATO. When the RAF was looking for 25 new transport aircraft, it wanted to buy the Boeing C17, made in the USA. But for "political" purposes, as a "gesture toward Europe," it decided to purchase the A400M Airbus, which is a joint project of Germany, France, Britain, Turkey, and four other European nations. The reason for the German Defense Ministry proposal was given as economic. Since the Social Democrats, who are in power (Schroeder's party) have shaved defense budgets, the German armed forces say they are struggling to meet their targets for creating the "European Rapid Defense Force." One economy would be to involve RAF personnel in training crews, maintaining the aircraft, and possibly having RAF pilots at the controls of Luftwaffe aircraft. Understandably, the British are royally upset. But Rudolf Scharping, the current German Defense Minister, feels that the decision "represents a change in philosophy. The whole idea is to get away from the present system of decisions being taken by national air forces." An article in Berlin said that the proposal would likely "Alarm US defense chiefs, who are worried that integrating European defense will undermine NATO." Such developments could signal changes in national governments. With British elections in the offing, there are those who feel Tony Blair has been misleading the public by continually insisting that any European Rapid Reaction force would be under NATO. But that is hardly what the Germans seem bent on doing. Watch! r ______________________________________________
IRAN HOSTS ISLAMIC TERRORISTS...
by Garner Ted Armstrong The Bible is a Middle Eastern book. Its setting is the so-called "Holy Land," called "Palestine" for many centuries. Almost all Bible prophecy is focused on Jerusalem, modern-day Israel, and the nations immediately surrounding Israel. Prophecies which impact Europe and the United States are mentioned only in connection with the Middle East. Since the most important prophecies Christ uttered were those concerning Jerusalem, and since Jerusalem is the major bone of contention between the Palestinians and Israel, those who are watching world happenings as Christ commanded (Luke 21:36) should be aware and alert to the threat of major WAR in the Middle East! As recently as April 25, 2001, Iran's leader, the "Ayatollah Ali Khamenei," kicked off the all-Islamic conference with a call for all the Muslim world to support the Palestinians, even if that meant "defying the United States" and other Western countries. Inflammatory speech followed inflammatory speech. Not surprisingly, the leaders of the various Islamic terrorist organizations, who have been responsible for innumerable bombings, shootings, stabbings and rocket attacks against Israelis, were center stage. Both the "Islamic Jihad" (Islamic `Holy War' group) and the infamous Palestinian terrorist organization "Hamas" stridently called for "Holy War" against Israel. The leader of the "Hizbollah" guerillas, who operate mostly from Syrian-supported bases in southern Lebanon, Sheik Hassan Nazrallah, warned Israel to expect more attacks from Palestinian extremists. Israel hardly needs any such warnings, since a constant, unrelenting series of attacks, including suicide bombers, have rocked the little nation repeatedly since the beginning of the second "Intifada," or Palestinian uprising. For decades, Israel has been unwittingly aided by the Arab nations, who have engaged in internal squabbles and debate. The inability of the various Arab states to cooperate, with the exception of the wars in 1948, 1967 and 1973, has been important to Israel. Now, with the Tehran conference, one might be led to assume the Arabs and other Islamic states are becoming increasingly united in their determination to annihilate the Jews. US leadership might well be advised to watch very closely this new round of saber-rattling from the Islamic nations. Heretofore, most have shied away from Iran, which is the known supporter of various of the most violent terrorist organizations. However, more than 30 Islamic countries were represented in Tehran, including the "moderate" nations of Egypt and Jordan. Hosni Mubarak, President of Egypt, in a nationally televised speech commemorating the return of the Sinai from Israel under the terms of the 1979 Peace Treaty, said, "This aggressive behavior [Israeli retaliation against terrorism] carries within itself dangerous risks to all the peoples of the region, including the Israeli people, and threatens the stability and security of the region, because violence will only breed more violence." As if to underscore the virtual rogues' gallery of infamous terrorists who attended, Leila Khaled, who hijacked a TWA airplane on an El Al flight from Amsterdam to New York 31 years ago, was also present. She was used as a bargaining chip by the British, who released her in exchange for the release of more than 300 passengers held hostage in the Middle East after having been hijacked on Swiss, British, or American airplanes. Shockingly, when reporters asked Richard Boucher, a spokesman for the State Department about the Tehran conference, he said he was unaware of it! He did add, however, that the US was "concerned" about the various terrorist groups which attended. So much for American "intelligence." A high member of the State Department "unaware" of the Teheran Conference? Underlying his and other top leader's concerns should be OIL. The delegates to the Iranian conference represent more than 80 percent of the world's energy supplies. Today, the United States views with alarm soaring gasoline prices, rising energy costs, regional brownouts and blackouts, and the impact of all-time low gasoline reserves due to the fact that lack of electrical energy has caused the shutdown of refineries in California. As God warned us, if we depend on our "lovers," (foreign, pagan nations which hate the United States) we will find that God will remove His blessings from us, and we will receive individual and national cursings, instead. God said, " The stranger that is within thee shall get up above thee very high; and thou shalt come down very low. "He shall lend to thee, and thou shalt not lend to him: he shall be the head, and thou shalt be the tail. "Moreover all these curses shall come upon thee, and shall pursue thee, and overtake thee, till thou be destroyed; because thou hearkenedst not unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which he commanded thee" (Deuteronomy 28:43-45). Today, the United States and Britain are "mixed among the nations." Millions of emigrants from pagan, heathen nations pour into our borders, both legally and illegally. The impact upon America's educational system, labor force, and tax base is well known. With the "teeming masses"; and the "wretched refuse of your teeming shores" come their "culture," language, and religion. Today, fundamentalist Islamics rub shoulders with Hindus; Buddhists rub shoulders with nominal Christians, and animists rub shoulders with Confucianists. Debates rage in local, county and State legislative bodies over language, preferential job treatment, schools, and "cultural," social, and ethnic differences. Unfortunately, the "open door" policy toward immigrants carries with it the threat of internal terrorism. Concerns over such threats are costing billions of dollars. Various law enforcement agencies are being instructed in emergency procedures should chemical or biological weapons be unleashed upon helpless civilians. All remember the deadly "serin" gas attack on Tokyo's subway system. The British are also aware of the potential. God says of Britain, "Ephraim, he hath mixed himself among the people; Ephraim is a cake not turned [burnt on one side, flat and collapsed in the center, and therefore ruined]. "Strangers have devoured his strength, and he knoweth it not: yea, gray hairs are here and there upon him, yet he knoweth not. "And the pride of Israel testifieth to his face: and they do not return to the LORD their God, nor seek him for all this. "Ephraim also is like a silly dove without heart: they call to Egypt, they go to Assyria [modern-day Germany]. "When they shall go, I will spread my net upon them; I will bring them down as the fowls of the heaven; I will chastise them, as their congregation hath heard" (Hosea 7:8-12). Millions of Britons, Canadians, Australians, South Africans and New Zealanders have HEARD many hundreds of my radio programs; viewed hundreds of my television programs, warning them of the impending national economic and military calamities to befall our peoples! Today, the United States finds itself utterly DEPENDENT on the good will of Arabic, Islamic states nations which are filled with rage against the US for our support of Israel! Both the US and Britain are DEPENDENT upon the continuing good will of GERMANY, the nation we helped destroy in World War II. Now, as I have predicted for more than 45 years, Germany is the most powerful nation in Europe destined to head up a kind of "United States of Europe" which will eventually become the most powerful ENEMY of the US and Britain! Becoming dependent on foreign nations is called "spiritual adultery" in God's Word! God demands that we depend upon HIM for our national blessings, not on hostile foreign nations who would rejoice wildly in the streets if they could hear of our downfall! God says His people Israel will call out in their distress, "I called for my lovers, but they deceived me: my priests and mine elders gave up the ghost in the city, while they sought their meat to relieve their souls. "Behold, O LORD; for I am in distress: my bowels are troubled; mine heart is turned within me; for I have grievously rebelled: abroad the sword bereaveth, at home there is as death [drought, famine, disease epidemics, together with terrorist attacks utilizing biological and chemical weapons]. "They have heard that I sigh: there is none to comfort me: all mine enemies have heard of my trouble; they are glad that thou hast done it: thou wilt bring the day that thou hast called, and they shall be like unto me" (Lamentations 1:19-21). Do not think for a moment that there would be millions of Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Sikhs, Animists, Taoists, Confucianists, and citizens of dozens of countries around the world who would not be dancing in the streets if they could hear of the collapse of the United States and Britain! Today, many prophecies that I have emphasized for DECADES are beginning to come to pass! My father and I were several decades EARLY in our predictions that a "United States of Europe" would form. Yet, it IS FORMING NOW! The major events to WATCH for are as follows: (1) The retirement or death of the pope of Rome: who will be his successor? (2) The building of a temple, or dedication of a symbolic corner stone in Jerusalem (3) Another major WAR erupting in the Middle East. (4) Another Arab OIL embargo, crippling the US economy. (5) European reaction to Arab initiatives, with a sudden attack by a united European army into Palestine! (6) The possible use of chemical, biological, or even NUCLEAR weapons by Arab (rogue) nations against Israel and US installations in the Mideast. (7) A global ECONOMIC COLLAPSE in the wake of an oil embargo and military intervention. (8) A great religious leader, taken to the temple in Jerusalem, proclaiming himself the "prince of peace," saying the "one true church" should return to "the place of its birth." When these things happen, not necessarily in this order, then shall come to pass Christ's warning, "When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) "Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains [not them which be in Oklahoma, or Californiabut those in JUDAEA]. Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house: "Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes. "And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! "But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the Sabbath day: "For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. "And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened" (Matthew 24:15-22). SHARON THREATENS WAR OVER by Garner Ted Armstrong No one knows the value of a pre-emptive strike better than the Israelis. In the early 1980s, when Israeli intelligence learned that Saddam Hussein's nuclear reactor at Ossirak, near Baghdad, was nearing completion, they sent F-16 fighter-bombers on a surprise attack against the facility, reducing the highly complex reactor to so much smoking, twisted metal and shattered concrete. Their bombing accuracy was incredible but then they had the latest equipment and technology to carry out the raid. Now, Russia seems determined to upset the "balance of power" in the Mideast by selling to Syria the highly sophisticated, deadly S-300 SAMs (Surface to Air Missiles) for a reported cost of more than $1 billion. Such a move would, according to military sources, "substantially modernize the Syrian army." For Russia's part, they see such a sale as a balancing act between their cooperation with Israel when they launched an Israeli "EROS-A1" spy satellite as a joint Russian/Israeli project, from the Svobodny Space Center in Russia. Further launchings were said to be in the works. But when Yassir Arafat visited Russia recently, Ariel Sharon immediately got on the phone with the Russian president, Vladimir Putin. This was on May 29, the same day Arafat arrived. A DEBKA report said "If the Russians are about to equip the Syrian army with top line weapons and go back to training hundreds of its officers in advanced methods of warfare as they did in the Soviet era, then [the] next Middle East war could well erupt before the new weapons reach Damascus." The weapons have been sitting in crates on the island of Crete, because when Russia arranged to sell those very same missiles to Cyprus (the Greek-held Island nation bitterly opposed by Turkey), the Turks threatened to bomb them into rubble if they were delivered. Egro: The missiles are still on Crete. To highlight how important the situation is, the Israeli housing minister, Nathan Sharansky, made an emergency trip to Washington in an attempt to ask the White House to intervene and stop the sales. He was sadly disappointed. DEBKA said deputy Defense Minister Paul Wolfowitz claimed the case was lost. So far as the State Department was concerned, the sale only represented a significant part of Putin's goal of selling $4 billion in arms this year to earn money for the flagging Russian economy. For over 40 years, whenever major or minor conflicts arose between the US and the Soviet Union, or when the Korean war broke out, or the Vietnam war, the situation room in the White House continually asked, "What will the Russians do?" Mesmerized by the blinding fear of the "bomb," and knowing the Russian military potential, the US continually followed insane policies of prosecuting wars with an enemy granted safe sanctuary; or, as the troops put it, "with one hand tied behind our backs." Is the United States still quivering in abject fear before Russia? One wonders. But if the US lacks the will, the Israelis do not. Remember the Pueblo? Our "spy ship" was boarded and hijacked by North Korea when it was in international waters, gathering sensitive data. The North Koreans still have it. Remember Entebbe? When Idi Amin played host to vicious terrorists who separated Jews from others on an Air France jetliner, the Israelis mounted a secret rescue attempt, landed at Entebbe airport, killed the terrorists and many of Idi Amin's best, and brought almost all of the hostages home. As His Lieutenants
Disappear One by One, by Garner Ted Armstrong Ben Eliezer is his name. He was the Israeli Defense Minister under Ehud Barak. He vowed to search out the leaders under Yassir Arafat who foment the violence against Israeli citizens; to "find them and kill them one by one." Such is the climate in the always boiling Middle East, where RELIGION is the catalyst, not merely politics; where deep-seated religious, cultural, and ethnic hatreds seethe, and where the issue is not only "the Occupied Territories" nor "land for peace" or any other political or military issue, but plain, age-old racial and religious antagonism. With the assassination of many of his top cohorts, I would think Yassir Arafat is not sleeping too well these days. As your news reported recently, Israeli helicopter gunships and US made F-16 fighter jets have been used to take out Palestinian police stations and headquarters. One top Palestinian survived the gunship attack, and then managed to dodge a sniper's bullet, and even escaped when a mini-bomb, planted inside his telephone, failed to explode. But recently, when he returned home, he put his key in the front door, he was killed by an explosion. A special advisor to President Mubarak of Egypt said recently that he hoped the "gunfire will not hit Arafat." However, there is little doubt that the Israeli's have attempted to include Arafat in their pinpoint attacks. Just the other day, I learned that the top PLO official in Jerusalem; a man I have known personally, and interviewed in his own home in East Jerusalem (not the old city), Faisal Husseini, had died of a heart attack while in Kuwait. Husseini was a moderate, who believed in negotiation. He accepted, deep down, the fact of Israel's existence, and was viewed as a "pragmatist" who sought peace. Naturally, he saw things entirely from the Palestinian point of view. I well remember the painting on his wall which depicted some nineteen young Palestinians who were killed during the original "intifada" or "uprising" many, many years ago. After my interview with Mr. Husseini, his activities resulted in his being imprisoned by Israel for a number of years. He learned Hebrew while in jail, and tried to encourage fellow Palestinians to reach out to Israelis; to accept some kind of coexistence. By the time you read this, you will know whether or not Yassir Arafat dared to attend Husseini's funeral, which was scheduled to take place on the "Harm el Sharif" or the Temple Mount, where he is to be buried with honors. Arafat has never been in Jerusalem (with one brief clandestine exception) since the 1967 6-day war. When weather once grounded his helicopter in Bethlehem, however, he was forced to depend on Israeli security forces to whisk him through deserted, darkened streets in the wee hours after midnight, so he could go to the Allenby Bridge for a meeting with Jordan's King Hussein. On radio in Israel, a political science professor, Menachem Klein, said of Husseini, "He was a man of peace." I also believed this. He was a mild-mannered, gentle man; a man of deep and sincere convictions who did not want war, but peaceful coexistence. Now that he is gone, a major voice for moderation has been removed from among the Palestinian leadership in East Jerusalem. Husseini was the son of a very influential father; the scion of an influential clan in Jerusalem, and a prominent member of the PLO. Now, with Sharon's crackdown on Palestinians, one wonders whether Arafat is on the list. Arafat is not loved unreservedly among the many and varied Arab Islamic Fundamentalist Terrorist Organizations, nor even in his own party. Sharon, for his part, has accused Arafat of directly ordering attacks on Israeli citizens. According to one unidentified source, Arafat is trying to goad Sharon into committing such "barbarous acts" in retaliation that he hopes to create many more "martyrs" for his cause, and to swing world public opinion sharply against Israel. Jerusalem is the focal point of Bible prophecy. It is the city where the Beast and the False Prophet will hold sway for three and one-half years (Revelation 17:12-14); where Christ will stand on the day He returns to this earth. It is the site where the "King of the North" will come like a "whirlwind" in lightning-like warfare, to occupy Palestine, and trigger the beginning of World War III, which will feature nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons. You and I could wake up any morning and find that the Mideast is once again in the grips of a major war! And when that happens, the United States and the big powers will be involved!
