The magnitude of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s defeat is surprising, perhaps even shocking. The fact his Fidesz party lost by a solid margin, however, should have surprised no one.

Orbán is widely derided by Western elites as an autocrat, and it is true that the state and most privately owned media are relentlessly supportive of him. But that’s never why Orbán was re-elected three times. He won because he did what every good democratic politician does: Provide peace and prosperity while respecting the nation’s values.

Finland’s Supreme Court fines MP for calling homosexuality ‘developmental disorder’

HELSINKI, March 26 (Reuters) – Finland’s Supreme Court on Tuesday found a member of parliament guilty and fined her for calling homosexuality a “developmental disorder”, in a long-running precedent case that has turned into a political tussle over the ‌limits of freedom of speech.

The court found Paivi Rasanen, a medical doctor and MP for the small Christian Democratic party since 1995, guilty of incitement against a group by claiming in a social media post in 2019 and on her website in 2020 that it was scientifically proven that homosexuality was a developmental disorder.

Swiss government slams 10 million population cap plan as threat to economy

The initiative, supported by the right-wing Swiss People’s Party, or SVP, faces a referendum on June 14 at a time when Switzerland is moving to deepen relations with the EU in order to safeguard market access to its main trade partner.

A €90 billion emergency loan for Kyiv and a new package of sanctions against Moscow are being held up by Budapest over an energy dispute involving the transit of Russian oil through the Soviet-era Druzbha pipeline.

Protesting French farmers entered ⁠the centre of Paris and reached the Eiffel Tower ‍on Thursday amid anger over a free-trade agreement between the EU and the Mercosur South American ‍bloc.

French farmers blockaded sites in Paris on Thursday in protest against a sweeping trade deal the European Union is poised to sign with South American nations and other local grievances.

The farmers overran police checkpoints to enter the city, driving along the Champs-Élysées avenue and blocking the road around the Arc de Triomphemonument before dawn, before gathering in front of the National Assembly, France’s lower house of parliament.

National Assembly President Yael Braun-Pivet was booed and jostled when she stepped outside of the assembly’s gates to talk with protesters.

Finnish police seized on Wednesday a ship sailing from Russia suspected of sabotaging an undersea telecoms cable running from Helsinki to Estoniaacross the Gulf of Finland, an area hit by a string of similar incidents in recent years.

The seized cargo vessel “Fitburg” was en route from the Russian port of St Petersburg to Israel at the time of the incident, Finland’s Border Guard authority told a press conference ‍in Helsinki.

The release of the 2025 U.S. National Security Strategy has brought into focus a fundamental tension that has been simmering since before President Donald Trump took office: the understanding between the United States and Europe that the geopolitical system that emerged from World War II was to be permanent. The National Security Strategy essentially says that this geopolitical relationship is obsolete, resulting in a sense that the U.S. has betrayed Europe. Thus is Europe’s crisis. In assuming that U.S. security guarantees were an enduring feature of global geopolitics, the Continent, as a whole, has made little effort to guarantee its own security.

U.S. guarantees were a direct byproduct of World War II. After 1945, the Soviet Union occupied and installed communist regimes in Eastern Europe. U.S. and British allies occupied Western Europe and formed a variety of democratic systems. The division left Western Europe extremely vulnerable to Soviet military action.

Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov resigned on Thursday after tens of thousands of Bulgarians joined protests across the country the night before, demanding that the government step down over allegations of widespread corruption.

“We hear the voice of the citizens, we must rise to the demands. Both the young and the old raised their voices in favour of the resignation. This civic position must be encouraged,” Zhelyazkov said, announcing his cabinet’s resignation at an extraordinary session in the National Assembly.

French lawmakers narrowly back social security budget in victory for PM Lecornu

France’s social security budget cleared a key hurdle in France’s National Assembly on Tuesday as lawmakers narrowly approved a draft bill aimed at staving off a huge gap in funding for welfare, pensions and healthcare, handing a victory to embattled Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu.

Lawmakers in the lower house of the French parliament approved the social security budget on Tuesday, averting a political crisis for now as Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu struggles to get the overall state budget passed by year end.

The National Assembly adopted the measure, which includes the suspension of an unpopular pension reform, by 247 votes to 234, and it will now head back to the Senate before returning to the lower chamber.

Lecornu hailed the outcome of Tuesday’s vote, thanking what he called a “responsible majority”.
