Six European economies vow to drive progress on stalled projects

BERLIN, Jan 28 (Reuters) – Ministers from six leading European economies including Germany and France vowed to be the drivers of European progress as they tackled how to advance projects stalled by the EU’s complex decision-making process at a time of geopolitical upheaval.

The video conference including finance and economy ministers from Poland, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands followed ridicule from U.S. President Donald Trump‘s administration over the time it takes the 27-country European Union to make decisions.

“As six major economies in Europe, we now want to be the drivers,” German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil said after the call. “We are providing momentum; others can join. What matters is strengthening our competitiveness and our defence capability.”

The stagnant economy has caused enormous political problems in Berlin, where tax revenue is nowhere near enough to pay for the perennially growing demands on the welfare state. Like in most of Europe, the stagnant German economy is also permanently impoverishing the young generation.

Echoing these frustrations, on January 5, Deutsche Wellebusiness writer Arthur Sullivan asked if 2026 will be the year when Germany breaks free from its economic stagnation:

The new military service law will come into effect in January. Many think it goes too far, while others want to return to full conscription.

It is snowing, and 16-year-old Carlotta is standing on the vast military training ground in Grafenwöhr watching a howitzer 2000 fire live ammunition. It is cold and very loud when the shells are fired, so Carlotta has to wear earplugs.

This is not a day like any other for the young school student: While her friends are sitting in warm classrooms in Cologne, she has made her way to Bavaria by train alone. In the barracks of Tank Artillery Battalion 375 in Weiden, she has moved into a room and been given a uniform, in which she now stands in the winter cold on the grounds, together with two dozen other young men and women.

A whole team of supervisors looks after the young people: The German military is sparing no effort to recruit new soldiers. Carlotta also wants to see if the Bundeswehr is really something for her. To do so, she is taking part in the so-called “Discovery Days” — a kind of short internship with the troops, including early morning sports and camaraderie evenings.

German lawmakers approve huge 2026 budget with billions in new debt

Germany’s budget for 2026 was approved by lawmakers in the lower house of parliament on Friday, with expenditure of €525 billion ($608 billion).

The plans include more than €180 billion in borrowing, greater than at any time in German history other than during the coronavirus pandemic.

“This budget once again has record investments,” said Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil during the debate in parliament. “However, it is also important that the investments now flow quickly,” added the Social Democrat, who is also vice chancellor.

Wild form of polio found in German sewage sample, Hamburg city authority says

The findings marked the first wild virus detection from environmental sampling in the country since this type of routine monitoring began in 2021.

German authorities on Thursday identified the northern city of Hamburg as the location where a sewage sample containing the wild form of the polio virus had been found, saying a task force had been established and more samples would be taken.

The nation’s main public health body, Robert Koch Institute, or RKI, told Reuters on Wednesday that the wastewater test at an unspecified German location was positive for the wild polio virus, in a setback for efforts to rid the world of the deadly disease.

The findings came more than 30 years after the last cases of wild polio virus infections in people were registered in Germany and marked the first wild virus detection from environmental sampling in the country since this type of routine monitoring began in 2021.

BERLIN — It was 1885 when Friedrich Trump first left Bad Dürkheim, in Germany’s western Palatinate region, for the United States. Now, 140 years later, the populist, anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) party wants to make his grandson President Donald Trump an honorary citizen of the district.

Although the symbolic gesture seems likely to fail in a vote by the local council, which is controlled by mainstream conservatives, the attempt to honor the U.S. president is the latest AfD overture to the Trump administration and its supporters. Some AfD members see common cause with Trump and Vice President JD Vance, and their crusade against “wokeism” and antipathy toward migrants.
