]]> Britain has been grappling with how to curb the perilous and politically contentious crossings, which in recent years have seen tens of thousands of migrants arriving annually on the shores of southeast England.

A record 230 migrants in one small boat crossed the English Channel to Britain, France’s lifeboat service and UK media said on Monday, in the latest example of larger numbers of people packing into a single vessel.

The 230, including more than 20 children, were counted aboard the rubber dinghy as it departed the northeastern French coast amid chaotic scenes late Sunday, the SNSM lifeboat service said in a statement posted online.

Juan Jesús Vivas, head of Ceuta’s local government, said as many as 60,000 people had pushed across over the past couple of days.

Fifty-seven bodies had been recovered on the Spanish side of the border, according to the Spanish government, which said there could be ‌additional casualties on the Moroccan side.

The rush on the border caused division in Europe, where leaders ​of fellow EU states called for Spain to ensure that the incident was contained.

The European Parliament on Wednesday approved a law aimed at speeding up the return of migrants with no legal right to remain in the EU, thanks to backing from centre-right and far-right political groups.

]]> ROME (AP) — Italy’s conservative government led by Premier Giorgia Meloni on Wednesday approved a bill introducing new measures aimed at fighting illegal immigration, including a so-called “naval blockade” for migrant ships trying to reach Italian shores.

A cabinet meeting in the late afternoon gave the go-ahead to the bill, which now needs to be discussed and approved in both chambers of parliament before becoming effective.

Italy’s new migration package — which also includes stricter surveillance at borders and cooperation with European agencies — comes a day after the approval of the new EU pact on migration and asylum, which Rome plans to implement swiftly.

]]> Geneva — The United Nations said Wednesday that 42 migrants were missing and presumed dead after a rubber boat capsized off the Libyan coast, with only seven survivors rescued after six days adrift.

“Tragically, 42 individuals remain missing and are presumed dead, including 29 from Sudan, eight from Somalia, three from Cameroon, and two from Nigeria,” the U.N.’s International Organization for Migration said in a statement.

The seven rescued survivors were four people from Sudan, two Nigerians and one person from Cameroon, the statement added.

A temporary injunction that was set to block asylum seekers from being housed at an Essex hotel has been overturned at the Court of Appeal.

Somani Hotels, which owns the Bell Hotel in Epping, and the Home Office challenged a High Court ruling that would have stopped 138 asylum seekers from being housed there beyond September 12.

In a ruling last week, Mr Justice Eyre granted Epping Forest District Council (EFDC) an interim injunction after the authority claimed that Somani Hotels had breached planning rules by using the Bell as accommodation for asylum seekers.

After a hearing on Thursday, three Court of Appeal judges ruled in favour of Somani Hotels and the Home Office on Friday, stating that Mr Justice Eyre’s ruling was “seriously flawed in principle”.

Sixty survivors were brought to a center in Lampedusa, said Filippo Ungaro, a UNHCR spokesperson in Italy. There were 92 to 97 migrants on board when the boat departed Libya, according to survivor accounts. Authorities were still searching for any remaining survivors.

The coast guard said in a statement that the death toll stood at 26, but was still “provisional and being updated.”
