An important turning point has been reached in Russia’s war on Ukraine. But unfortunately for Kyiv, it’s not the “tide is turning” in Ukraine’s favor narrative that Volodymyr Zelensky has been pushing ever since his long-range drone attacks began smashing oil refineries and logistics warehouses deep inside Russia and sinking dozens of ships in the Sea of Azov. Rather, last night not one of the 27 ballistic missiles fired by Russia at and around Kyiv was shot down. At least 17 people were killed and a series of huge warehouses and major Ukrainian retail outlets were devastated.

Ukraine’s strike on Iranian tanker is a message for Trump

An Iranian cargo ship in the Caspian Sea does not, at first, seem like an obvious target for Ukrainian drones.

But more than 500 miles away from Kyiv – and just days before meeting Donald Trump at the White House – Volodymyr Zelensky wanted to make an important point.

The ship, which has not been named, was allegedly carrying military cargo between Russia and Iran.

Iran has long been supplying Shahed drones to Russia for its war against Ukraine. Now Russia is fitting them with powerful jet engines, and is believed to be sending them back to Iran for its war against the US.

Germany funds 50,000 strike drones for Ukraine, source says

LONDON, July 12 (Reuters) – Germany is funding 50,000 attack drones for Ukraine, a source familiar with the matter said, in an order that ‌marks one of the biggest known purchases of drones for Kyiv by a ‌Western government.

Ukraine has relied heavily on a range of unmanned vehicles during the more than four-year-old war against Russia, and it is producing millions of drones annually as Ukrainian forces conduct thousands of drone strikes each day.

The attack drone order involves Shrike first-person-view (FPV) drones made by major Ukrainian manufacturer SkyFall and equipped with software from U.S. defence technology firm Auterion designed to autonomously track ‌and hit moving targets in ⁠the final phase of the flight.

The high-profile strike comes as Putin was warned his economy is on the brink due to the war, Russian citizens tried to flee Crimea and Ukraine continues to seize increasing amounts of territory on the battlefield.

The oil terminal, located on the Gulf of Finland at the city’s Great Port of St. Petersburg, is one of Russia’s largest fuel storage and export facilities, with a throughput of 12.5 million tons per year.

Russian attack kills at least 18 in Ukraine, some of them children buried under rubble

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia launched hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles against Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities overnight, killing at least 18 civilians and wounding more than 100 others, authorities said Tuesday.

The damage trapped some people under the rubble of apartment buildings. Emergency crews digging through the wreckage pulled out the body of a 3-year-old child and the bodies of a mother and her 8-year-old son in the central Ukrainian city of Dnipro, officials said.

The attack stretched from night into day and the boom of explosions reverberated across cities. Officials said that 12 people were killed in Dnipro and six in Kyiv.

Kyiv residents had been on edge for days after Russia warned that a massive aerial attack was coming and warned foreign diplomats to leave the Ukrainian capital. None appeared to heed the call.

Ukraine deploys units to five Middle East countries to intercept drones

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy earlier said that Kyiv wanted money and technology in return for its help in the Middle East, although this still had to be agreed.

KYIV: Ukraine has deployed military units to five Middle Eastern countries to help protect critical and civilian infrastructure against drones, Ukrainian security council secretary Rustem Umerov said on Friday (Mar 20) after visiting the region.

He said the teams had been sent to the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, and Jordan, which have come under fire during the Iran war. Further steps for “long-term security cooperation” have been outlined with each of the five nations, he said, without giving details.

“Ukrainian military specialists are operating in each of these countries under the coordination of the National Security and Defense Council,” Umerov wrote on X.

Ukraine is opening up exports of its domestically produced arms to Europe, President Volodymyr Zelensky said — as Kyiv looks to capitalize on its wartime technology boom.

The arms race in Ukraine has created many weapons firms that are producing more arms than Kyiv can buy, leading Zelensky to announce Sunday that 10 “export centers” will open across Europe this year to raise much-needed funds for his country.

The Ukrainian president noted that Ukraine’s advanced drones, which have proven successful against Russia’s military, will also be up for sale as European nations begin to increase their defense spending.
