The Iran war reveals the limits of BRICS

The bloc struggles to translate its economic weight into geopolitical sway. But there may be a silver lining to it.

This year’s BRICS summit has wrapped up in New Delhi with the usual promises of deepened cooperation and expanding economic ties. But there was an important absence.

Although the US-Israel war on Iran has affected most of BRICS’ 11 members and 10 partner countries, the declaration issued by the bloc did not address it directly. Nor did it condemn the United States, which – objectively speaking – is the aggressor state in the conflict.

The wording allowed all members to remain inside the same diplomatic tent. It also revealed just how difficult it is for BRICS to turn shared dissatisfaction with the Western-led order into coordinated geopolitical action.

Trump Says North Korea’s Kim Has Responded to His Overtures

WASHINGTON, Aug 17 (Reuters) – A day after he ordered the United States to ⁠scale ⁠back military exercises with South Korea and called North ⁠Korea “unthreatening and respectful,” U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had responded to his outreach.

Trump’s relationship with Kim has received less White House emphasis than it did in his first term, when the two men met and exchanged letters, but the U.S. president has repeatedly signaled interest in reviving direct diplomacy ‌with the North Korean leader.

Asked by a reporter in ‌the Oval Office why Kim had not responded to his efforts to reengage, Trump responded, “he has.” He did not provide further details.

Nicaragua’s Ortega says country will ‘never again’ hold elections, shutting out opposition

The president made the announcement during a speech commemorating the 1979 Sandinista revolution

Nicaraguan leader Daniel Ortega said the Central American country would no longer hold elections, further closing off any potential path for the opposition to challenge the government he leads with his wife, Rosario Murillo.

Ortega, Nicaragua’s longest-serving leader, has remained in power since 2007 after previously governing during the 1980s. His current presidential term is scheduled to run through 2027.

“There won’t be any more elections here for them to try to seize the government and seize power,” Ortega said.

US to give Poland new $4 billion loan for arms purchases, PAP reports

WARSAW, June 12 (Reuters) – The U.S. will give Poland a new $4 billion loan from the Foreign Military Financing ‌programme, U.S. Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security Thomas DiNanno said on Friday during the inaugural flight of F-35 jets bought from the U.S.

DiNanno told PAP news agency the U.S. would offer Poland the new loan ⁠for arms purchases, bringing the entire amount available to the country to $20 billion.

Poland’s first F-35 fighter jets made the inaugural flight across the NATO-member state on Friday, as the country became the first on the alliance’s eastern flank to possess the aircraft amid what it sees as a threat from Russia.
