Judge shot dead in his car outside courthouse in resort of Acapulco

CBS News — Thu, 12 Dec 2024 22:09:09 +0000

A judge was shot dead Wednesday in Mexico’s once-thriving beach city of Acapulco, local media and the state prosecutor’s office said.

Local press identified the slain judge as Edmundo Roman Pinzon, president of the Superior Court of Justice in Guerrero state, saying he was shot at least four times in his car outside an Acapulco courthouse.

The southern state of Guerrero is one the areas hardest hit in Mexico by violence linked to organized crime, and has seen a string of deadly attacks this year.

In October, the mayor of the state capital Chilpancingo was killed and decapitated just days after taking office. Days later, four mayors asked federal authorities for protection.

Hurricane Otis: Dozens killed in Mexico’s Guerrero state

Vanessa Buschschlüter | BBC News — Thu, 26 Oct 2023 21:13:44 +0000

At least 27 people were killed by Hurricane Otis, which made landfall on Mexico’s Pacific coast on Wednesday, officials say.

Four more people have been reported missing, the security secretary said.

Acapulco was among the areas worst hit with 80% of the resort’s hotels damaged and streets flooded.

The Mexican President travelled to the city by land and at one point had to get out of his car and walk as debris from a mudslide blocked the highway.

“The army is bringing machinery and we’re going to try to reopen [the highway] as soon as possible,” President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said.

With landlines and mobile phone coverage disrupted for more than 24 hours, it took officials until Thursday morning to release the death toll.

7.0-magnitude earthquake strikes in Mexico near Acapulco; 1 reported dead

Phil Helsel and Kurt Chirbas — Wed, 08 Sep 2021 16:57:59 +0000

The earthquake was felt in Mexico City, which is around 180 miles from Acapulco. One death was reported in Guerrero state.

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck north of coastal resort city of Acapulco, Mexico, on Tuesday, killing at least one person, officials said.

Buildings swayed in Mexico City, the country’s capital some 180 miles north of Acapulco. There were no immediate reports of major damage.

Guerrero state Gov. Hector Astudillo told Milenio Television late Tuesday night that one person had been killed by a falling post in the town of Coyuca de Benitez near Acapulco, according to The Associated Press.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said in a video earlier Tuesday night that the damage appeared limited. He said there were rock slides near Acapulco, which is on the Pacific coast. Images showed some damaged buildings in Acapulco, including storefronts and cars damaged by falling bricks or poles.

The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.0, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It had a depth of around 20 kilometers, or around 12 miles, which is a shallow earthquake, it said.

Authorities said 92 aftershocks were felt in the hours after the initial quake hit.

The earthquake was felt in Mexico City, where some areas lost power. About 1.6 million people were left without power as of Tuesday evening, the Federal Electricity Commission said in a statement. The mayor said there were no reports of major damage in the capital and no injuries reported.

Park Royal Beach Acapulco, a resort, told NBC News that it felt the earthquake and that no injuries were reported but that staff members were checking hotels to make sure.

In Chilapa in Guerrero state, video appeared to show bricks and other material in the street next to a damaged building.

The earthquake was initially reported as magnitude 7.4, which was revised to 7.0.

Mexico is no stranger to strong earthquakes. In 1985, a huge temblor struck the Mexican capital, killing thousands of people.

The ground shook for nearly a minute in some parts of Mexico City, but the quake was less evident in other parts of the country, the AP reported. Some people evacuated their buildings briefly, but most quickly went back inside on the rainy night. Several neighborhoods were without electricity, the mayor said.
