The Lebanese army thwarted an attack by a gunman on the U.S. Embassy in Lebanon on Wednesday morning in Beirut.

The attack took place as tensions simmered in the tiny Mediterranean country, where months of fighting between Hezbollah militants and Israeli troops has displaced thousands along the border.

Local media reported that there was a gunfight involving at least one attacker and lasting almost half an hour at the U.S. diplomatic mission.

Iranian state television reported a first and then a second blast during a crowded anniversary event at the cemetery where Soleimani is buried in the southeastern city of Kerman.

An unnamed official told state news agency IRNA that “two explosive devices planted along the road leading to Kerman’s Martyrs’ Cemetery were detonated remotely by terrorists”.

State television said that at least 103 people had been killed and 211 others injured, making it one of the worst such attacks in Iran, which has faced similar incidents in the past from various groups, including Islamic State.

Russia targeted the Odesa region for the second consecutive night, a day after it ended its cooperation in an agreement that allowed vital Ukrainian grain exports to leave port. Ukraine’s air force said Russia launched 63 missiles and drones across the country, 37 of which it was able to shoot down. Ukraine is usually able to shoot down a higher percentage of them in recent months.

“Russian terrorists absolutely deliberately targeted the infrastructure of the grain deal,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Telegram. “Every Russian missile is a strike not only on Ukraine but on everyone in the world who wants [a] normal and safe life.”

Serhiy Bratchuk, a spokesman for the Odesa military, described the attack as “very powerful, truly massive,” and called it “a hellish night.”

Three people were killed and three others wounded, one critically, in a shooting in Paris on Friday, according to the city’s prosecutor, Laure Beccuau.

The motive for the shooting was not immediately clear, but a 69-year-old suspect from France was taken into custody, according to the prosecutor. The suspect was also wounded.

One man and two women were killed, according to authorities. All three who suffered injuries are men.

An investigation has been opened into murder and aggravated violence charges.

Beccuau confirmed the attacker was already known to the police, and had recently been released from prison. He was also banned from possessing a weapon, the prosecutor said.

A Hong Kong pro-democracy protester has told how he was beaten in a “barbaric” attack by Chinese diplomats after being dragged into their consulate grounds in Manchester.

Bob Chan told a news conference in London yesterday that he suffered injuries requiring hospital treatment after being pulled away from a street demonstration and assaulted. “I am shocked because I never thought something like this could have happened in the UK,” he said.

Chan spoke out “after China, insisting its diplomats in Manchester were blameless, lodged a formal complaint with the UK government”, reported Hong Kong Free Press.
