Flag-draped coffins of slain leader, relatives paraded on truck through crowded capital, as mourners call for death to Trump and Netanyahu; Katz vows same fate for new supreme leader

TEHRAN — A sea of mourners dressed in black flooded into Iran’s capital Monday for a procession as part of the funeral of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with throngs of people calling for the death of US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Khamenei’s flag-draped coffin, and those of members of his family killed in a February 28 airstrike at the start of the war launched by Israel and the United States, sat on board a truck decorated to resemble the ornamental grating that surrounds the shrine of an imam. The massive turnout, encouraged by Iran’s theocracy as a sign of strength, came as it negotiates with the US over a permanent end to the war that killed the 86-year-old cleric who ruled Iran for decades.

But as the 86-year-old cleric emerges triumphant from the bout—declaring victory in his first post-truce remarks last week with Tehran still reeling from the Israeli air campaign—the very prospect of his downfall has accelerated discussions about his potential successor, and even given rise to speculation of a major shake-up in future governance.

And while a largely fractured array of Iranian dissidents abroad calls for a popular uprising to dismantle the Islamic Republic altogether, little evidence suggests such a development is imminent. Rather, analysts with sources on the ground tell Newsweek that if change does come in Iran, it’s most likely to emerge from within, and from those with established influence.

Iranian leaders are issuing renewed calls for the destruction of Israel, saying the “annihilation” of the Jewish state is the only fair price for America’s recent killing of top Iranian military leader Qassem Soleimani.

Seyed Hashem al-Heidari, cultural chief of Hashd al-Shaabi, an Iraqi paramilitary force directed by Iran, said Tehran is eyeing Israel as a primary target of retaliatory military strikes following Soleimani’s death last week in a U.S. airstrike.

“Annihilation of Israel and the U.S. is the price of the blood of martyr Soleimani,” al-Heidari said early Wednesday during an anti-U.S. gathering in the Iranian city of Qom.

“This aggression should be responded to by the tough revenge stressed by Supreme Leader [Ayatollah Khamenei] and all options are on the table,” al-Heidari said in remarks published by Tehran’s state-controlled press. “All U.S. bases in the region, the U.S. embassy in Baghdad, and all their soldiers are within the range of resistance missiles because annihilation of Israel and the U.S. is the price of the blood of martyr Soleimani, and God willing the entire region will be liberated.”

Iran’s continued threats of violence followed the Islamic Republic’s Tuesday evening attack on U.S. military outposts in Iraq. Iranian military sources said the strike, which was comprised of about 15 ballistic missiles, hit at least “20 sensitive points” and resulted “in the destruction of a considerable number of drones and helicopters.”

Iran has signaled that it has no plans to scale back its regional terror operations. Iranian military officials said they have identified at least 104 “sensitive U.S. positions” that could be the site of its next missile attack.

“A sum of 104 sensitive U.S. positions in the region have been identified to immediately come under raid as soon as the Americans make the first mistake,” Iranian general Yadollah Javani, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, said on Wednesday.

President Donald Trump addressed the nation on Wednesday to urge restraint and advocate for diplomacy following Iran’s escalation. The U.S. president said that he is imposing additional economic sanctions on Iran as a result of the Tuesday attack and urged European nations still party to the 2015 nuclear deal to immediately abandon their commitments under the accord.

“Iran must abandon its nuclear ambitions and end its support of terrorism,” Trump said. “We must all work together toward making a deal with Iran that makes the world a safer and more peaceful place.”

The US seeks to reduce Iranian oil exports to zero in push to limit the country’s global influence

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has said leaving the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty is one of the “many options” Tehran has to retaliate against US sanctions, state media reported Sunday.

The United States has imposed a raft of sanctions against the Islamic republic since President Donald Trump withdrew last year from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal with world powers.

On Monday Washington announced an end to sanction waivers for buyers of Iranian crude oil, and earlier this month the US declared Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards a “foreign terrorist organisation”.

“The Islamic republic has many options… (leaving) the NPT is one of them,” Zarif said in remarks to Iranian reporters in New York aired by state television.

State news agency IRNA said Zarif was asked why he had not touted leaving the nuclear treaty as one of Iran’s possible reactions during his trip as he had done so previously.

“The country’s officials are deliberating” the different options and measures, Zarif replied, adding that the possibility of leaving the NPT was among those options. He did not list the other options.

Iran has branded the US sanctions “illegal” and Zarif warned on Wednesday that there would be consequences should Iran be barred from selling its oil.

The 2015 Iran nuclear deal with six world powers — Britain, China, France, Russia, the United States and Germany — had given the Islamic republic sanctions relief in exchange for curbs on its nuclear program.

Separately, Iran’s top general warned Sunday Tehran could close the strategic Strait of Hormuz shipping route if it faces more “hostility”, news agency ISNA said, as the US tightens up sanctions.

“We are not after closing the Strait of Hormuz but if the hostility of enemies increase, we will be able to do so,” armed forces chief of staff Mohammad Bagheri told semi-official ISNA.”

Also if our oil does not go through the strait, other countries’ oil will certainly not cross the strait, too,” he added.

The statement came after Washington said on Monday it would start imposing sanctions on countries such as India, China and Turkey that buy Iranian oil.

Eight countries were initially given six-month reprieves after the United States reimposed sanctions on Iran in November, following President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from a 2015 nuclear accord.

Iranian officials have repeatedly warned the Islamic republic could shut down the strait, a vital shipping lane for international oil supplies, should it find its national interests or security threatened.

“We believe Iran will continue to sell its oil … (and) use the Strait of Hormuz. But if the United States takes the crazy measure of trying to prevent us from doing that, then it should be prepared for the consequences,” foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Wednesday.

“It is in our vital national security interest to keep the Persian Gulf open, to keep the Strait of Hormuz open. We have done that in the past and we will continue to do that in the future,” he added.

The report comes several days after Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei called the end of oil sanction waivers by the United States a “hostile measure” that “won’t be left without response.

The White House announcement last week declared that any country importing Iranian oil will no longer be exempt from sanctions if they do not end trade partnerships by May 2, in a renewed effort to heighten pressure on the Islamic Republic.

The aggressive move is the latest in the United States’ no-holds-barred move to crush the economy and scale back the clerical regime’s influence by seeking to reduce Iran’s oil exports to zero.

On Wednesday, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei slammed US President Trump’s decision to withdraw from the nuclear deal, saying he “made a mistake”.

Khamenei, who has supported the nuclear deal albeit reluctantly, claimed Trump lied in his speech on Tuesday in which he announced that he pulled the United States out of the agreement and reimposed sanctions on Tehran.

“You heard last night that the president of America made some silly and superficial comments. He (Trump) had maybe more than 10 lies in his comments. He threatened the regime and the people, saying you’re doing this and that. Mr. Trump I tell you on behalf of the Iranian people: You’ve made a mistake,” Khamenei said in a statement on his official website.

The Supreme Leader addressed the Iranian government in a televised speech, saying “If you don’t succeed in obtaining a definitive guarantee — and I really doubt that you can — at that moment, we cannot continue like this.”

The reactions to Trump’s decision to withdraw from the nuclear deal have been divided.

Israel, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain have all been supportive of Trump, but a long list of countries have spoken out against it, including the remaining signatories to the deal.

Russia’s foreign ministry said Moscow was deeply disappointed by Trump’s move, calling it a blatant violation of international law.

In a statement, the ministry said it was “deeply disappointed by the decision of US President Donald Trump to unilaterally refuse to carry out commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action,” adding that Washington’s actions were “trampling on the norms of international law.”

France, Germany and Britain said on Tuesday that they were committed to implementing the 2015 Iran nuclear deal despite Trump’s decision to pull out and his threat of sanctions.

China on Wednesday also voiced regret over Trump’s decision and vowed to “safeguard” the agreement.

“China regrets this decision made by the US,” foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told a regular press briefing.

Geng said China will maintain “normal economic and trade exchanges” with Iran despite Trump’s decision to withdraw from the 2015 accord and reimpose sanctions on Tehran.

“China calls on all relevant parties to assume a responsible attitude” in order “to return at an early date to the right track of implementing the deal,” he said.

-Turkey-

On Wednesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan joined the opposition to Trump, saying the United States will “lose in the end” for withdrawing from the landmark nuclear deal with Iran.

Erdogan told CNN International in an interview to be broadcast in full on Wednesday evening that he feared fresh crises would break out in the region as a result of the move.

“We don’t need new crises in the region,” he said, according to a partial transcript on the CNN website published late Tuesday.

But he said that it was Washington who risked losing as Tehran would fulfill its side of the bargain and stick to the accord.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called snap elections for June 24, bringing the polls forward by a year and a half ADEM ALTAN (AFP/File)

“The US would be the ones to lose,” he said.

“Iran will never compromise on this agreement, and will abide by this agreement to the end… that’s what I think. However, the US will lose in the end.”

Erdogan rebuked Turkey’s NATO ally for ripping up the agreement, which was signed under the administration of his predecessor Barack Obama.

“This is not how the international mechanisms work,” he said.

“International covenants and international conventions cannot be annulled at will. If any document bears your signature, you need to respect that. You need to abide by that,” Erdogan was quoted as saying, reiterating Russia and China’s statements.

Erdogan said even if the US may be able to enjoy windfalls from rising oil prices as a result of the move it would have a negative effect on the world economy.

“Many of the countries, in poverty, will be hit even harder and deeper,” he said.

Turkish-US relations are already strained over US backing for a Kurdish militia in Syria which Ankara says is linked to the outlawed PKK group, as well as the jailing of an American pastor in Turkey.

Ankara also has a sometimes troubled relationship with Tehran, but the two sides have been working closely — along with Russia — over the last year in a bid to bring peace to Syria.
