The Food and Drug Administration is banning the use of Red No. 3, the petroleum-based dye that gives many popular foods and drinks their recognizable, vibrant hues. Although some companies already began phasing out the additive prior to the FDA’s January 15 announcement, the synthetic ingredient is still found in over 3,000 products like fruit juice, beef jerky, sodas, and even some over-the-counter medications.

Red No. 3, chemically known as erythrosine, was first introduced into foods in 1907. Companies subsequently added it to thousands of products to boost their colors over the decades, often in snacks like ice cream and candy marketed directly to children. Some of the earliest calls for Red No. 3’s removal date back to the 1980s, when a research study indicated the synthetic could be carcinogenic in rats after ingesting it in large enough amounts. There is no definitive link between the additive and cancer in humans, but consumer advocacy groups continued to push for its prohibition.

Shandong Port Group, operator of key oil ports used by China’s independent refiners, has prohibited access and services to tankers sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury, a move that could curb Chinese oil imports and raise costs for local refiners, trade sources have told Reuters.

Shandong Port Group has issued a notice, seen by the trade sources, banning ports from allowing tankers on the U.S. Treasury’s designated list to dock, unload, or use ship services. The ports where the ban is in effect include Qingdao, Rizhao, and Yantai on China’s east coast, which are key import sources of crude for the so-called teapots, the independent Chinese refiners.

These refiners are the major buyers of Iranian crude oil and the ban on vessels designated by the U.S. could reduce the cheap supply of crude to the teapots.

A High Court judge has found that a UK emergency ban on the sale or supply of puberty blockers is lawful.

The restrictions came into effect on June 3 and apply to young people under 18 with gender dysphoria in England, Wales and Scotland.

Justice Beverley Lang said in a ruling made public on Monday that a review commissioned by the National Health Service (NHS) about the “very substantial risks and very narrow benefits associated with the use of puberty blockers” had provided “powerful scientific evidence” in support of the restrictions.

The group TransActual and a youth who cannot be named under a court order sought to challenge the decision of former health secretary Victoria Atkins to ban prescribing hormones that can delay the development of puberty.

They are sometimes prescribed to help children with gender dysphoria by giving them more time to consider options that could include gender reassignment.

The ban restricts the NHS from providing the medication outside of clinical trials and prevents it from being prescribed by private suppliers.

The NHS stopped prescribing puberty blockers last year, saying there was not enough evidence about the benefits and harms.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -TikTok and its Chinese parent company ByteDance sued in U.S. federal court on Tuesday seeking to block a law signed by President Joe Biden that would force the divestiture of the short video app used by 170 million Americans or ban its use.

The companies filed their lawsuit in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, arguing that the law violates the U.S. Constitution on a number of grounds including running afoul of First Amendment free speech protections. The law, signed by Biden on April 24, gives ByteDance until Jan. 19 to sell TikTok or face a ban.

“For the first time in history, Congress has enacted a law that subjects a single, named speech platform to a permanent, nationwide ban,” the companies said in the lawsuit.

The White House and U.S. Justice Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

According to the German newspaper Zeit Online, the government intends to prohibit telecom carriers from using certain components from Chinese firms Huawei Technologies and ZTE in their 5G networks.

According to Zeit Online, citing government sources, the prohibition could include components already integrated into networks, forcing operators to dismantle and replace them.

The administration, which is presently re-evaluating its relationship with major trade partner China, did not respond quickly to a request for comment. However, a source verified the story to Reuters.
