Kilauea Volcano’s Eruptions Could Continue for Months or Years, Report Says

While Hawaii’s Kilauea Volcano has been erupting almost continuously since 1983, a recent spate of eruptions that have destroyed hundreds of homes could continue indefinitely, according to a new report.

Issued by the U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaii Volcano Observatory, the report says the eruptions in Kilauea’s lower East Rift Zone could become the longest ever recorded at the volcano, as the lava flows show no sign of slowing down. That could mean more homes in danger, and with more than 700 dwellings destroyed since the lava flows began May 3, it’s already a full-blown disaster.

“Given this volume and the sustained withdrawal of magma from the summit reservoir without appreciable deformation in the lower East Rift Zone, it is most likely that the LERZ eruption may continue for months to years,” said the report.

Furthermore, with no signs that the eruptions are slowing down, this also raises fears that new channels could form, diverting lava to other areas previously untouched by fissure openings. If that happens, more residential areas could be in danger.

Nearly three months after the eruptions began, lava has covered more than 12 square miles of land, and one fissure – fissure 8 – is the main source of the lava flows in recent weeks. Scientists will continue to study this fissure, and if the pressure drops, it could be a sign that the eruption is waning.

The report was given to the Hawaii County Civil Defense in an effort to better prepare for possible impacts from the continued eruption, according to CNN.com.

“If the ongoing eruption maintains its current style of activity at a high eruption rate, then it may take months to a year or two to wind down,” said the report. “While this seems to be the most likely outcome, a pause in the eruption, followed by additional activity, cannot be ruled out, nor can an abrupt cessation or a transition to steady, longer-lived activity at a lower effusion rate.”

THE Hawaii volcano eruption has caused a lava island to form in the sea just off the coast of the Big Island, as the Mount Kilauea crater exploded with the force of a 5.2 magnitude earthquake.

Lava channels flowing into the ocean bed have caused an island to appeal in the sea just from Kapaho Bay.

And lava is “oozing” from the island, according to the Hawaii Civil Defense Agency.

The agency has warned residents to steer clear of the active lava flow, due to the possibility of lava spilling over from channels.

Seismic activity is still causing disruption on the Big Island, changing Hawaii’s landscape forever.

On Friday at 4.53pm local time, a small 2.59 magnitude earthquake was recorded.

And a few hours later at 7.15pm local time, the Hawaiian Volcanoes Observatory reported a “collapse/explosive event” with energy equal to a 5.2 magnitude earthquake, which occurred at Halemaumau Crater of Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano at 7.08pm.

The agency confirmed there is no tsunami threat to the island as a result of the earthquakes.

More than 20 fissures have appeared in and around Big Island since the volcano first erupted in May of this year.

Fissure 22 has been dormant throughout the last week, with no reports of lava leaking from the crack.

Fissure 8, considered one of the most aggressive points of the lava flow, has shot lava over 10,000 feet into the air over the last month.

The lava has been spreading across the island, making its way towards the pacific ocean where, upon contact with sea water, produces a corrosive and harmful gas called laze, which can cause lung collapse, respiratory problems and serious health issues.

The agency warned Hawaiians to avoid laze plumes, to minimize exposure to hydrochloric acid and glass particles, which can irritate the skin, eyes, and lungs.

Kilauea continues to spew lava and ash.

Motorists have been warned to be on the lookout for cracks in roadways, while residents have been advised to seek cover if ash clouds are observed. Meanwhile, assistance is available island-wide to individuals and businesses in Hawaii County that have been affected by the Kilauea eruption.

At around 00.45 local time in Hawaii (11.45am + 1 BST), the US Geological Survey (USGS) Fissure 22 has no visible activity. No other fissures are active but many were steaming this morning, possibly due to the increasing humidity in the area.

The USGS update said that the Kapoho Crater continues to be the main ocean entry at the southern edge of the flow front.

And despite no visible surface connection to the Fissure 8 channel, lava continues to ooze out at several points on the 6 km (3.7 mi) wide flow front into the ocean, which has been marked as a ”highly hazardous area”.

The town of Kapoho, in the Puna district of Hawaii County, is now uninhabited. By early June, the town had been largely destroyed by lava and the bay filled in and extended out into the ocean.

HAWAII’S Kilauea volcano has been erupting for more than two months and is showing no sign of slowing down. How bad is the collapse explosion at Kilauea volcano’s summit?

Continued lava flows, earthquakes and slumping caused by Kilauea have devastated Hawaii’s Big Island.

Some 6,100 acres have been covered in lava according to the United States Geological Survey, including areas where homes once stood.

The latest official number of houses that have been destroyed since the eruption began was 700, however as the eruption continues this number will continue to rise.

A Civil Defense warning read: “The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports that Fissure 8 continues to erupt lava into the perched channel heading northeast from the vent.

“A flow moving around the west side of Kapoho Cone has proceeded to quarter of a mile to the coast.”

They also warn that lava is spilling over from the channel, causing dangerous streams of molten rock.

“Break outs are occurring from the main channel in Leilani Estates,” the agency added.

“The United States Geological Survey has confirmed that two homes on Luana St. have been destroyed by the break out and one home on Nohea St. is threatened.

“Be aware that spillovers of the channel and other breakouts are possible on the active flow field, do not access the active flow field due to extreme hazard.”

How bad is the collapse explosion at Kilauea volcano’s summit?

The USGS reported an explosion beneath the summit of Kilauea, occurring at 5.45am local time (4.45pm BST) on Wednesday, July 11.

The scientific agency said “a collapse/explosion occurred beneath Kilauea caldera with energy equivalent to a magnitude-5.3 earthquake.

Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano is spewing lava into the ocean.

“The number of earthquakes dropped from 30-40/hr to less than 10/hr.

“We expect the earthquakes to increase over the next day until the next collapse/explosion tomorrow.

“The collapse/explosive event this morning was followed by an increase in lava from the fissure 8 vent which has produced small overflows from the upper channel that are threatening a few homes on Nohea and Luana streets.”

There could be larger explosions following this one, following patterns from previous activity in the volcano.

Lava is flowing over the channel and into other streams

As the lava continues to spread, the landscape across Big Island is being changed forever.

The flow from fissure 8 that is entering the ocean has begun to create its own landmass, as the boiling lava meeting the cool ocean solidifies and builds up along the seabed.

This land mass is now 405 acres wide and is highly unstable.

Hawaii County Mayor Harry Kim has extended the state of emergency for at least another 60 days, as scientists remain unable to predict when Kilauea will stop erupting.

If the lights by the window shake, it’s a magnitude 3. If the water sloshes out of the catchment tank, it’s a magnitude 5.

Living in a village rocked by hundreds of earthquakes — or, more accurately, earthquake-like tremors — each day, Volcano residents have developed their own unique measurements to determine which quakes are nothing to worry about and which ones might be something more.

“Every time, you wonder if this one’s going to be the big one, if this one isn’t going to stop,” said Volcano resident Tim Freeman.

Freeman was one of dozens of Volcano residents who attended a community meeting Thursday evening at Cooper Center, where representatives of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory explained the ongoing changes at Kilauea summit.

While attendees at the meeting were composed and responded to the speakers with good humor, one question was repeated over and over: “When will it end?”

The answer, repeated as many times, was “Nobody knows.”

“We don’t know if this is the beginning, the middle or if we’re getting close to the end,” said HVO geologist Don Swanson.

For several weeks, ground subsidence around the summit caldera following the recession of the lava reservoir has caused the volume of the crater to expand by approximately 10 million cubic meters per day, said HVO research geophysicist Kyle Anderson.

This subsidence is accompanied by semi-regular pressure explosions, and temblors which register as earthquakes of up to magnitude 5.4.

The explosions happen roughly once per day. Following an explosion, seismic activity lessens for a time, but additional tremors of increasing intensity occur throughout the day until another explosion settles the mountain for the next cycle.

The constant cycle is nerve-wracking for the village’s inhabitants.

“I’ve been staying outside all the time because I can’t stand listening to my house shake,” said resident Antoinette Bullough.

Lydia Meneses, another resident who lives less than 3 miles from the caldera, said the repeated quakes are taking their toll on her home.

“I’ve noticed the hairline cracks are getting more hairlines,” Meneses said.

More worrisome, Meneses said, is the surface of Piimauna Drive, the only road in or out of her subdivision. While the road is still passable, cracks in the surface have developed and expanded since the quakes began, leading Meneses to worry that eventually she might have no way out.

“People don’t understand what we’re going through,” Bullough said, explaining that neighborhood dogs, spooked by the shaking, bark incessantly, while the larger tremors are nearly impossible to sleep through.

“It’s a bit unnerving,” said Jim Wilson, a resident of Volcano for 25 years. “But there’s nothing any of us can do about it.”

During Thursday’s meeting, John Broward, chief ranger for Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, said he was confident that the park will reopen eventually, although the park will be drastically changed when it does. The ever-widening crater already has swallowed a parking lot, with Jaggar Museum — now stripped of its exhibits — likely to follow.

However, HVO representatives reassured residents that the caldera collapse is not expected to spread far from the summit. Cracks in Volcano road surfaces are entirely caused by repeated stress — i.e., constant shaking — rather than volcanic fissures or sinking land.

Residents remain uneasy though, and with far fewer visitors to Volcano now that the park is closed, residents and business owners wait in a constantly shaking limbo for things to return to normal.

“It’s more stressful than annoying right now,” Wilson said. “Not seeing any end to it is what makes it so stressful.”
