‘Islamic State’ claims responsibility for bombings in Iran

More than 80 people were killed and scores more injured in the blast at a ceremony marking the death of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.

The so-called Islamic State claimed responsibility for two devastating explosions that killed 84 people at a commemoration in Iran marking Qasem Soleimani’s assassination by the United States.

The Islamist militant extremist group posted a statement on its affiliate Telegram channels taking responsibility for the attack saying two of its members “activated their explosives vests.”

Two bombs exploded in the Iranian city of Kerman on Wednesday and killed scores gathered to commemorate the death of Soleimani, a prominent Iranian general leader killed by a US drone strike in neighboring Iraq in 2020.

The blast was the deadliest attack on Iranian soil in the 45-year history of the Islamic Republic.

Taliban: Kabul Checkpoint Bomb Blast Kills, Wounds Several

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — A bomb exploded near a checkpoint at Kabul’s military airport Sunday morning killing and wounding “several” people, a Taliban official said, the first deadly blast of 2023 in Afghanistan.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but the regional affiliate of the Islamic State group — known as the Islamic State in Khorasan Province — has increased its attacks since the Taliban takeover in 2021. Targets have included Taliban patrols and members of Afghanistan’s Shiite minority.

Twin bombings at Jerusalem bus stops kill teen, injure 26

Two back-to-back blasts went off at bus stops in Jerusalem at the height of morning rush hour Wednesday, killing an Israeli-Canadian teen and injuring at least 26, in what police said were suspected Palestinian attacks.

The first explosion went off near a crowded bus stop on the edge of the city. The second took place 30 minutes later in the settlement of Ramot in the city’s north.

The victim who died in one of the attacks was identified as 16-year-old Aryeh Shechopek, who was on his way to a yeshiva when the blast went off.

Rabbi Aharon Kahana, head of the Harei Yehuda Yeshiva, described his slain student to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz as a “charming boy” and a “genius” who was beloved by all.
