Lula, 79, was first taken to a hospital in Brasilia after complaining about a severe headache. An MRI scan identified the brain bleed and he was transported to Siro-Libanes Hospital in Sao Paulo to have it drained.

A hospital statement said it is believed the bleeding was caused when Lula fell in his bathroom at his presidential residence back in October.

Tesla, SpaceX and X Corp. leader Elon Musk ramped up his online attacks on Brazilian Supreme Court justice Alexandre de Moraes on Thursday, amid an intensifying political and legal battle between the tech billionaire and his companies, and Brazil’s highest court.

De Moraes’ court announced on Wednesday that it was ordering Musk and X Corp. to appoint a legal representative for the social media company, formerly known as Twitter, in Brazil within 24 hours, or X would face “penalty of suspension of activities” there.

A suspension of X in Brazil could cause serious business problems for the already embattled social network. Brazil has a population of more than 171 million active social media users, according to market research by Oosga.

The nation is preparing for October municipal elections. And under Brazil’s laws, social networks there have to employ someone who can receive and consider government takedown notices about political misinformation.

For the last eight months, a remote Brazilian tribe has been getting high-speed internet for the first time.

The Marubo people live in one of the most isolated spots on the planet and although they have contact with the outside world, the tribe has preserved a traditional way of life for centuries.

They sleep in communal huts along the Ituí River, hunt and grow their own food, talk their own language and until recently have not had access to the internet.

But Elon Musk’s satellite-internet service, Starlink, which he launched in Brazil in 2022, has changed this.

Seventy-five people are now known to have died in the flooding in Brazil’s southern Rio Grande do Sul state, while more than 100 people remain missing, local authorities said on Sunday.

The state’s civil defence authority said 101 people were unaccounted for and more than 80,000 had been displaced after record-breaking floods swept across the state, which borders Uruguay and Argentina.

Brazil’s president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, arrived in Rio Grande do Sul on Sunday, along with most members of his cabinet, to discuss rescue and reconstruction works with local authorities.

Rescue workers are continuing to race against the clock to save people from raging floods and mudslides. Using four-wheel-drive vehicles and at times jet skis, rescuers made their way through waist-deep water, searching for those who had been left stranded by the rising waters.

In addition to 630 confirmed fatalities, another 1,009 deaths are under investigation since Jan. 1 to determine whether they were caused by dengue or by another pathogen.

According to the Health Ministry, 75% of the mosquito breeding sites were found in homes, so awareness campaigns were increased and people were asked to take all precautionary measures possible.

In Sao Paulo, the incidence of dengue reached 414 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, while other regions affected by the virus include Brasilia, Paraná, Goiás, Rio de Janeiro. and Minas Gerais. Experts have argued that a strong El Niño weather phenomenon coupled with temperatures higher than usual led to the present outcome, which is projected to reach 4.2 million positive cases by Dec. 31.

SAO PAULO — France is beefing up its defense ties with Brazil — shored up by President Emmanuel Macron’s first state visit to the country.

The cooperation between the two was highlighted Wednesday when Brazilian first lady Janja Lula da Silva smashed a bottle of champagne on the bow of the submarine Tonelero, and then Macron and his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva pulled a ceremonial lever to launch the vessel.

The Scorpène-class submarine was built for the Brazilian navy by Brazil’s Itaguaí Construções Navais (ICN) using technology transferred by France’s Naval Group. ICN is a joint venture between the Brazilian government and Naval Group, which owns a 41 percent stake.

Judging by the coverage in Chinese state media, that world looks like a China-dominated rejection of Western security and humanitarian concerns.

Chinese dictator Xi Jinping wrote an op-ed for South African media on Monday as he departed for Johannesburg to attend the summit. Xi’s letter reminded South Africa of China’s support — including, most recently, supplies to fight the global pandemic China unleashed — and praised South Africa for being the first nation on the continent to join China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

“Many Chinese companies are expanding their operation and at the same time taking more social responsibilities in South Africa. Automobiles and home appliances with Chinese brands yet made in South Africa are very popular among local consumers, and are now owned by numerous South African households,” Xi wrote.
