Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Widefield confirmed during a press conference that eight people were on the bridge when it collapsed.

Baltimore City Fire Department Chief James Wallace said earlier Tuesday that two people had been rescued with one of them in serious condition.

Widefield said all six of the people unaccounted for were part of a construction crew working on the bridge at the time of the collapse.

The cargo ship “MV” Abdullah was hijacked while on its way to Al Hamriyah port in the United Arab Emirates.

According to reports, 23 crew members were taken hostage along with the ship, which was carrying 58 tons of coal from Mozambique.

An official with SR Shipping Lines, which own 23 vessels, confirmed to New Age Bangladesh that the company got a message at about 1:30 p.m. local time from the captain, who informed them of the hijacking.

The Houthis have claimed one of their most significant strikes since they started launching missiles at ships in the Red Sea, after two projectiles hit a Belize-flagged cargo ship.

The Yemeni rebels claimed the ship was at risk of sinking, a significant propaganda victory for the Houthis if confirmed.

The security firm of the Rubymar, which was sailing from the United Arab Emirates to Bulgaria, said the crew had been evacuated safely but did not confirm a sinking.

The security company LSS-SAPU said the vessel was struck astern on Sunday, although there was nothing flammable onboard.

“We are unsure [of the ship’s condition]. There is nobody onboard now,” the spokesperson said. “The owners and managers are considering options for towage.”

The Houthis, a militant group, has been fighting a civil war since 2014 against the Saudi-backed Yemeni government and a third faction, backed by the United Arab Emirates, that is against both the Houthis and the Saudi-backed forces.

Saudi Arabia and the UAE both consider the Houthis, an anti-imperialist insurgency that also condemns the United States and its support for Israel, to be a terrorist organization. The United States backs the Saudis in the Yemeni conflict.

“The hijacking of a cargo ship by the Houthis near Yemen in the southern Red Sea is a very grave incident of global consequence,” the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement.
