]]> MINNA/MAIDUGURI, Nigeria, Dec 8 (Reuters) – Nigeria’s government on Monday rescued 100 schoolchildren abducted last month from a Catholic school in Niger state, in one of the country’s biggest mass kidnappings in recent years.
The students arrived at the government house in Niger’s capital Minna and were handed over to the state governor.
President Bola Tinubu welcomed the rescue.
“My directive to our security forces remains that all the students and other abducted Nigerians across the country must be rescued and brought back home safely. We must account for all the victims,” he said.

]]> Fifty of the more than 300 students kidnapped from a Nigerian Catholic school on Friday have escaped and been reunited with their parents, according to the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Catholic church.

But about 253 kidnapped students as well as 12 staff members and teachers are still being held captive, CAN chairman Bulus Yohanna, a Catholic bishop and proprietor of the school, said on Sunday.

In a statement, Mr Yohanna said the pupils escaped between Friday and Saturday.

Police have identified the suspect who they say opened fire outside of a church at a Catholic school in Minneapolis, killing two children and injuring 18 others, as 23-year-old Robin Westman.

An 8-year-old and 10-year-old were shot and killed when the gunman fired through the windows of a church at the Annunciation Catholic School on Wednesday morning, police said.

The shooter died at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said.
