This move signals a significant expansion of OpenAI’s ecosystem and could reshape how users interact with the web. Instead of relying on traditional navigation, users will interact through a conversational interface similar to ChatGPT, allowing them to ask questions, perform tasks, and conduct research directly within the browser.

With ChatGPT boasting 400–500 million weekly active users, OpenAI’s browser could potentially capture a significant share of the market if adopted by its existing user base and may exert pressure on the browsing giant Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) ad money. Chrome is a cornerstone of Google’s ad business, and a successful OpenAI browser could strain this revenue stream, that constitutes nearly 75% of Alphabet’s total income.

Elon Musk said Friday that his AI company, xAI, will debut its technology on Saturday.

“Tomorrow, xAI will release its first AI to a select group,” Musk posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. “In some important respects, it is the best that currently exists.”

The AI startup, which Musk announced in July, seeks to “understand the true nature of the universe,” according to its website, and Musk seems to be setting it up to compete with companies like OpenAI, Google and Anthropic, which are behind leading chatbots like ChatGPT, Bard and Claude. In the spring, Musk reportedly secured thousands of high-powered GPU processors from Nvidia, the kind of chips necessary to build a large language model akin to tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google’s Bard.

The demo includes an inaccuracy about the James Webb Space Telescope, underscoring the misinformation risks of using Bard and ChatGPT to refine search.

As Google’s AI-powered Bard prepares to compete against ChatGPT, don’t count on the chatbot programs always being right: A recent demo of Bard shows it spouting inaccurate information.

Bard, which Google announced on Monday, is slated to arrive in the coming weeks. To promote the AI program, the company posted a GIF(Opens in a new window) on social media that shows Bard answering a question about what new discoveries NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has made.

The program lists three discoveries the space telescope made in an easy-to-read, bulleted format. Hence, through Bard, a user can quickly learn information, without having to scroll through a long list of search results to find the applicable site.

The only problem? Astronomers were quick to point out(Opens in a new window) one of the listed facts that Bard generated is wrong.
