According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Thursday, June 9th, 2022, at 4:32 am local time at an intermediate depth of 79 km. Weak shaking might have been felt in Antofagasta (pop. 309,800) located 81 km from the epicenter, and Sierra Gorda (pop. 480) 130 km away.

SANTIAGO, Chile — Chile is implementing a fourth vaccination dose for some citizens as the number of daily coronavirus infections rises.

President Sebastián Piñera was present on Monday when two adults with immunosuppression problems received a fourth vaccination for COVID-19 at a Santiago hospital.

Chile is applying a fourth dose early because the current daily infection rate of 4,000 coronavirus cases could rise to 10,000 or more, Piñera said.

Vaccination with a fourth dose for the immunosuppressed will end on Feb. 7. Then the program will turn to people over 55 years old who had a third dose at least six months ago.

Chile, which has 19 million people, had planned to start with the fourth dose in February. The sharp increase in infections in neighboring Argentina, Bolivia and Peru contributed to its decision to advance the process.

Significant magnitude 6.5 earthquake 172 km northwest of Talca, Chile

A shallow magnitude 6.5 earthquake was reported early evening near the town of Constitución, Chile.

According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Saturday 21 November 2020 at 7.54 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage. Moderate shaking probably occurred in Constitución (pop. 37,900) located 112 km from the epicenter, and Los Navegantes (pop. 200) 114 km away.

Weak shaking might have been felt in Santa Cruz (pop. 33,300) located 171 km from the epicenter, Talca (pop. 197,500) 172 km away, Cauquenes (pop. 31,400) 175 km away, San Javier (pop. 22,400) 177 km away, San Antonio (pop. 85,700) 185 km away, and Curicó (pop. 102,400) 187 km away.

Hundreds of people protested in Chile’s capital Santiago on Wednesday to demand the resignation of President Sebastian Pinera over police repression of the country’s social protests.

Police fired tear gas and water cannon to keep around 500 protesters from approaching the Moneda presidential palace.

The demonstrators blocked the capital’s main Alameda thoroughfare near the palace for about two hours, leaving rush-hour commuters affected by the tear gas.

The protest came three weeks after Chileans voted overwhelmingly in a referendum to replace the constitution inherited from the 1973-1990 dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, blamed for the South American country’s glaring inequalities.

The referendum was a key demand after months of demonstrations that left more than 30 dead broke out in October 2019, initially against rising public transport fares but quickly mushrooming into wider anger at social inequality.

Despite an almost 80 percent approval for the change, 37-year-old Alex Acuna told AFP he was taking part in the demonstration because “nothing has been achieved” yet.

“Pinera has always been asked to resign from the beginning because of everything that has happened in the social explosion, like the systematic human rights violations,” he said.

“There have been deaths, a number of people left with eye trauma, and no one is responsible! The high command never goes to court or to prison,” he said.

Interior Minister Victor Perez resigned earlier this month after Congress approved a constitutional charge against him over police handling of the protests, after it was widely condemned by human rights organizations.

Danae Cariqueo, another protester, said the anti-government demonstrations would continue.

“You can’t let go of the street, it’s where the people make themselves heard,” the 27-year-old said.

“That is why they are so afraid of us and repress us as they are doing. We’ll continue until it’s over and everything changes.”

A number of people living near the coast were evacuated as a precaution, according to BNO News. There were no reports of casualties.

GFZ reported aftershocks of around magnitudes 6.2 and 5.5.

There was no tsunami threat from the earthquake, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

GFZ earlier showed the magnitude as 7, with the quake at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).

Chile is on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of fault lines circling the Pacific Basin which is prone to frequent earthquakes.

In June, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Chile´s mineral-rich northern desert. Damage in that quake was minimal and mining companies in the region had told Reuters their operations had not been affected.

Mine facilities and other infrastructure in Chile are built to withstand extraordinarily large quakes.

CARACAS – Venezuela’s socialist government said Wednesday it had derailed an attempted coup, claiming the United States, Colombia and Chile colluded in a military plot to assassinate President Nicolas Maduro and install a general and former defense minister in his place.

Communications Minister Jorge Rodriguez said the plan involved active and retired army officers and was to have been executed between Sunday and Monday this past weekend.

“We were in all the meetings to plan the coup d’Etat. We were in all the conferences,” Rodriguez said, suggesting that government informers had infiltrated the alleged plotters during planning meetings.

He accused Colombia’s right-wing President Ivan Duque of “planning coups, assassinations of the president” as well as implicating Chile’s conservative President Sebastian Pinera and U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton in the plot.

At least six of the alleged plotters had been detained, the minister said in a televised speech in Caracas, presenting testimony from one of them, named as Lt. Carlos Saavedra.

Four of the officers were arrested last Friday, a move denounced by opposition leader Juan Guaido in a statement on Tuesday, though no details of the circumstances, or the reasons for their arrests, emerged.

Saavedra was identified as the nephew of retired Gen. Ramon Saavedra, who was arrested Wednesday by intelligence agents in Venezuela’s western Barinas state.

According to Rodriguez, surveillance of the plotters and Saavedra’s recorded confession revealed that the plan envisaged the takeover of three military bases, including the La Carlota air base in Caracas.

The plotters hoped to spring Raul Baduel — a former defense minister under the late President Hugo Chavez — from jail to proclaim him president, Rodriguez said.

“It is a military coup d’etat against Guaido or against President Nicolas Maduro?” Rodriguez joked.

Guaido is recognized as interim president by the United States and more than 50 other countries after the National Assembly leader said in January that Maduro’s re-election last year was illegitimate.

Venezuelan authorities recently announced that 17 people had been charged with attempting a coup on April 30, during Guaido’s failed attempt to inspire an uprising, when he called on the armed forces to rebel against Maduro.

The effort failed to shift the military’s allegiance and Guaido was backed by only around 30 military personnel. The revolt sputtered out after two days of deadly clashes between protesters and security forces.

Rodriguez accused Maduro’s former intelligence chief Cristopher Figuera — who has defected to the United States — of seeking “hundreds of thousands of dollars” for supporting the abortive uprising.

Figuera “turned out to be a mercenary,” the minister said in Caracas.

In a series of shock claims made to media in the United States, Figuera said members of Maduro’s family and his government were engaged in money laundering and corruption and alleged that Hezbollah cells were allowed to operate in Venezuela and raise funds.

Washington has imposed a series of crippling sanctions on Maduro’s government, holding the president responsible for the collapse of the Latin American oil giant, which has seen millions flee the country amid widespread shortages of basic goods and medicines.

Russia, Maduro’s staunchest foreign backer along with Cuba and China, announced earlier Wednesday it was withdrawing military “technicians.”

It deployed the military personnel in Venezuela in a highly-publicized show of support for Maduro, who has been locked in a months-long power struggle with Guaido.
