Three separate Colorado wildfires force evacuations Sunday

Evacuations are in place in Teller and El Paso counties, pre-evacuation in Pueblo.

At least three wildfires forced evacuations across Colorado Sunday afternoon amid dry and windy conditions.

El Paso County fire
Residents in the area of Curtis Road and Patton Drive in Peyton in El Paso County were ordered to evacuate just after 5 p.m. Sunday for a wildfire.

The mandatory evacuation area covered homes and businesses inside the square formed by Curtis Road, Falcon Highway, Slocum Road and Colorado 94, according to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

The evacuation orders were lifted after 8 p.m., the sheriff’s office said on Twitter. Denver7 reported the fire was 38 acres and considered 100% contained.

Teller County fire
Additionally, Teller County residents with addresses between 600 and 720 on County Road 89 were ordered to evacuate at 5:07 p.m. for a separate fire burning near County Road 89, according to the Teller County Sheriff’s Office.

The approximately 3-acre fire was contained and residents were allowed to return to their homes, Teller County Sheriff’s Office tweeted at 7:01 p.m.

The Front Range was under a red flag warning Sunday due to high wind and low humidity that meant fire could spread quickly, according to the National Weather Service at Boulder. The warning expires at 7 p.m.

Pueblo fire
Earlier Sunday afternoon, an 18-acre wildfire in Pueblo along the Arkansas River east of the intersection of W. 11th Street and Pueblo Boulevard forced the evacuation of an animal shelter, Pueblo Fire Department Capt. Woody Percival said.

The fire was 75% contained and all evacuations were lifted, the department tweeted at 6:50 p.m. There was also no injuries or damage to any structures reported.

Residents in about 15 houses near the fire were asked to be ready to evacuate but were not forced to leave Sunday afternoon, Percival said. The Paws for Life animal shelter at 800 N. Pueblo Blvd. was evacuated and the animals relocated to a safe place.

That fire was burning between the rural housing development and a water treatment plant on the river, moving through 3-foot-tall grass and tall old-growth trees, with winds of about 15 to 20 mph and low humidity, Percival said.

“All of the things that add up to a bad situation with a fire,” he said.

Paws Fire – City Park and the Aberdeen area next to city park have been evacuated due to a fire on both banks of the Arkansas River. Pueblo City Fire and several other local Fire Departments are fighting the fire. Due to the high winds the fire is challenging to control.

About 45 firefighters from a variety of agencies were attacking the blaze, and it was “somewhat contained” by about 3:30 p.m., Percival said, though he added firefighters were “struggling to keep it in its boundaries right at the moment.”

The Colorado Red Cross opened an evacuation center for the Pueblo fire at Goodnight Elementary School, at 624 Windy Way in Pueblo. It has since been closed.

440,000+ acres of forest land closed as fires rage in Colorado

BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) – The U.S. Forest Service has closed hundreds of thousands of acres in Colorado as wildfires continue to burn across the state.

2020 has become one of the worst fire years on record for Colorado. The year has seen two wildfires break an 18-year-old record to become the first and second-largest in state history (Cameron Peak and Pine Gulch), a single wildfire surpassing 200,000 acres for the first time in state history (Cameron Peak), and large wildfires breaking out unusually late in the year. The Colorado Sun, using data from the Rocky Mountain Area Coordination Center, created a chart that shows more wildfires have broken out this year than any other in the last 20 (the chart doesn’t show before 2000), though 2002 still tops 2020 for acreage burned — for now, at least.

As a preventative measure, the U.S. Forest Service announced Tuesday that it was temporarily closing national forest land in Clear Creek, Jefferson, Gilpin, Boulder, and Larimer counties. The closure went into effect at midnight Wednesday.

Violators could face up to $5,000 in fines and six months in prison.

“It became clear to us that this was the path that we needed to take and we do not take it lightly,” Reid Armstrong, a public affairs specialist for the Arapaho and Roosevelt national forests, told sister station CBS Denver. “We are in extreme drought conditions right now and what we need is enough snow and enough moisture to really change those small fine fuels.”

The Forest Service hopes the move will help firefighters battle current wildfires — and stop any new ones from sparking.

Colorado fires grow by thousands of acres overnight

Oct. 17 (UPI) — Two Colorado wildfires — one of which is the largest in the state’s history — grew by thousands of acres Friday amid high winds and low relative humidity.

On Saturday morning Grand County Sheriff Brett Schroetlin issued an evacuation notice for residents of the area near Colorado Highway 125 due to the East Troublesome fire near the state’s northern border.

That fire grew by more than 6,000 acres and as of Saturday was burning 11,329 acres or 18 square miles.

Firefighters have not contained the blaze, which has also prompted the closure of a section of Highway 125 and the opening of an evacuation center.

The Cameron Peak fire near Fort Collins grew 20,000 acres Friday for a total of 187,537 acres or 293 square miles burning as of Saturday morning.

Authorities have issued a new round of evacuation orders for those living in the foothills immediately west of Fort Collins and south of the Big Thompson Canyon.

The fire, which ignited Aug. 13, is 57% contained and is considered the largest fire in Colorado’s history.

A cold front is expected to move over the Front Range Saturday evening, reducing winds and reducing temperatures, but until then gusts as high as 50 miles per hour are expected with winds of up to 70 miles per hour about 9,000 feet.

Air quality in the Fort Collins area is expected to be unhealthy for sensitive groups until Sunday.

Fires menace US West, tornado touches Colorado wildfire site

DENVER – An erratic wildfire charging through extremely dry land in the heart of Colorado ski country destroyed three homes and forced people to flee, authorities said Thursday.

Elsewhere in Colorado, a rare high-elevation tornado touched down at the site of another wildfire Thursday but apparently caused little damage and had no effect on the fire.

They were among more than 60 large blazes burning across the United States, mostly in the West, where whipping winds and increasing heat have made it easy for flames to spread.

Fires exploded in Northern California, Utah and other areas, where a prolonged and severe drought has desiccated forests.

In Colorado, residents of multimillion-dollar properties, modest condos and mobile homes were ordered to evacuate early Thursday because of an unpredictable wildfire reported the night before near the town of Basalt. More than 500 homes were affected.

The Eagle County Sheriff’s Department said no other homes had been lost besides the three reported earlier.

Smoke from the fire temporarily halted flights into the resort town of Aspen, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) away.

Authorities believe the flames started after people at a shooting range used tracer bullets, which illuminate the path of fired bullets.

A tornado was reported Thursday south of Fairplay, a central Colorado town about 10,000 feet (3,000 meters) above sea level. It appeared to touch down at or near the edge of a wildfire that has burned about 17 square miles (43 square kilometers), National Weather Service meteorologist Russell Danielson.

Tornadoes are rare at that elevation and are seldom seen at any wildfire, Daniels said.

Another Colorado wildfire about 205 miles (330 kilometers) southwest of Denver destroyed more than 130 homes and forced more than 2,000 people in three counties to evacuate. It grew to about 160 square miles (nearly 420 square kilometers) Thursday.

Rain was expected in parts of Colorado, which could dampen fires but trigger flash flooding in areas left bare by wildfires.

Hotter, drier weather was forecast in Northern California, where thousands of firefighters were battling a wildfire that was already about three times the size of San Francisco.

By Thursday night, the fire northwest of Sacramento had burned nine buildings and 137.5 square miles (356 square kilometers). However, authorities didn’t immediately indicate whether any homes had been destroyed in the rural area, although about 110 structures remained threatened, according to state fire officials.

The blaze was 33 percent contained.

“The cool weather on Wednesday helped firefighters, but it will become hotter and drier starting Friday and into the weekend, and that will be a challenge,” said Anthony Brown, a spokesman with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Some of the 2,500 people who were under mandatory evacuations orders were allowed to return home.

Authorities say a fire that jumped across Interstate 5 south of the Oregon border in California has closed the southbound lanes in that area.

The Oregon Department of Transportation said Thursday evening the southbound lanes would remain closed at Ashland, Oregon. Motorists were advised to take an alternate route toward California.

California Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency for Siskyou County, citing “extreme peril” to people and property. There were some evacuation in the tiny town of Hornbrook.

The fire called Klamathon started Thursday afternoon.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said Thursday night that the blaze had burned nearly 8 square miles (20 square kilometers). Multiple structures are threatened, damaged or destroyed, the department said.

In northern New Mexico, a wildfire closed a ranch where novelist D.H. Lawrence once sought spiritual renewal. Officials said a fire in drought-stricken Carson National Forest has scorched nearly 4 square miles (10 square kilometers) since June 24 and is only partially contained.

Forest restrictions imposed last week closed the University of New Mexico’s D.H. Lawrence Ranch, which hosted the writer in the summers of 1924 and 1925 as well as Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung, author Willa Cather and artist Georgia O’Keeffe after Lawrence’s 1930 death.

In Utah, scorching summer temperatures and winds quickly pushed flames through bone-dry vegetation near a popular fishing lake about two hours southeast of Salt Lake City. The 66-square-mile (171-square-kilometer) fire near Strawberry Reservoir has burned about 90 structures.

Darren Lewis’ family cabin is in the fire’s path and he fears the A-frame structure built 46 years ago by his uncle and father has burned, though he’s waiting for confirmation.

Lewis, 44, and his extended family planned to spend the Fourth of July at the property in a narrow canyon near a river but instead nervously watched social media for updates from the Salt Lake City suburb of Magna.

More than 1,100 people have been evacuated in the mountain area, and the family hasn’t been able to go back since Monday, he said. It is a frequent family gathering spot and has special sentimental value because his father and uncle both died last year.

“That’s our healing place,” Lewis said.

In Narrow Decision, Supreme Court Sides With Baker Who Turned Away Gay Couple

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Monday ruled in favor of a Colorado baker who had refused to create a wedding cake for a gay couple. The court’s decision was narrow, and it left open the larger question of whether a business can discriminate against gay men and lesbians based on rights protected by the First Amendment.

The court passed on an opportunity to either bolster the right to same-sex marriage or explain how far the government can go in regulating businesses run on religious principles. Instead, Justice Anthony M. Kennedy’s majority opinion turned on the argument that the Colorado Civil Rights Commission, which originally ruled against the baker, had been shown to be hostile to religion because of the remarks of one of its members.

At the same time, Justice Kennedy strongly reaffirmed protections for gay rights.

“The outcome of cases like this in other circumstances must await further elaboration in the courts,” he wrote, “all in the context of recognizing that these disputes must be resolved with tolerance, without undue disrespect to sincere religious beliefs, and without subjecting gay persons to indignities when they seek goods and services in an open market.”

Justice Kennedy often casts the deciding vote in closely divided cases on major social issues. When the court agreed to hear the Colorado case last June, it seemed to present him with a stark choice between two of his core commitments. On the one hand, Justice Kennedy has written every major Supreme Court decision protecting gay men and lesbians. On the other, he is the court’s most ardent defender of free speech.

On Monday, Justice Kennedy chose a third path, one that seemed to apply only to the case before the court.

Writing for the majority in the 7-to-2 decision, he said the Civil Rights Commission’s ruling against the baker, Jack Phillips, had been infected by religious animus. He cited what he said were “inappropriate and dismissive comments” from one commissioner in saying that the panel had acted inappropriately and that its decision should be overturned.

“The neutral and respectful consideration to which Phillips was entitled was compromised here,” Justice Kennedy wrote. “The Civil Rights Commission’s treatment of his case has some elements of a clear and impermissible hostility toward the sincere religious beliefs that motivated his objection.”

That passage echoed his plea for tolerance in his majority opinion in 2015 in Obergefell v. Hodges, which recognized a constitutional right to same-sex marriage. In that decision, he called for “an open and searching debate” between those who opposed same-sex marriage on religious grounds and those who considered such unions “proper or indeed essential.”

When the Colorado case was argued in December, Justice Kennedy seemed frustrated with the main choices available to him and hinted that he was looking for an off ramp. His questions suggested that his vote had not been among the four that had been needed to add the case to the court’s docket.

The breadth of the court’s majority was a testament to the narrowness of the decision’s reasoning. Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and Justices Stephen G. Breyer, Samuel A. Alito Jr., Elena Kagan and Neil M. Gorsuch joined Justice Kennedy’s majority opinion. Justice Clarence Thomas voted with the majority but would have adopted broader reasons.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, joined by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, dissented.

The case, Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, No. 16-111, arose from a brief encounter in 2012, when David Mullins and Charlie Craig visited Mr. Phillips’s bakery, Masterpiece Cakeshop, in Lakewood, Colo. The two men were going to be married in Massachusetts, and they were looking for a wedding cake for a reception in Colorado.

Mr. Phillips turned them down, saying he would not use his talents to convey a message of support for same-sex marriage at odds with his religious faith. Mr. Mullins and Mr. Craig said they were humiliated by Mr. Phillips’s refusal to serve them, and they filed a complaint with Colorado’s Civil Rights Commission, saying that Mr. Phillips had violated a state law barring discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Mr. Mullins and Mr. Craig won before the commission and in the state courts.

The Colorado Court of Appeals ruled that Mr. Phillips’s free speech rights had not been violated, noting that the couple had not discussed the cake’s design before Mr. Phillips turned them down. The court added that people seeing the cake would not understand Mr. Phillips to be making a statement and that he remained free to say what he liked about same-sex marriage in other settings.

Though the case was mostly litigated on free speech grounds, Justice Kennedy’s opinion barely discussed the issue. Instead, he focused on what he said were flaws in the proceedings before the commission. Members of the panel, he wrote, had acted with “clear and impermissible hostility” to sincerely held religious beliefs.

One commissioner in particular, Justice Kennedy wrote, had crossed the line in saying that “freedom of religion and religion has been used to justify all kinds of discrimination throughout history, whether it be slavery, whether it be the Holocaust.”

Justice Kennedy wrote that “this sentiment is inappropriate for a commission charged with the solemn responsibility of fair and neutral enforcement of Colorado’s anti-discrimination law.”

In dissent, Justice Ginsburg said that a few stray remarks were not enough to justify a ruling in Mr. Phillips’s favor.

“What prejudice infected the determinations of the adjudicators in the case before and after the commission?” Justice Ginsburg asked. “The court does not say.”

Justice Kennedy wrote that the commission had also acted inconsistently in cases involving an opponent of same-sex marriage, “concluding on at least three occasions that a baker acted lawfully in declining to create cakes with decorations that demeaned gay persons or gay marriages.”

In dueling concurring opinions, two sets of justices debated how central that last observation was to the court’s decision. Justice Kagan, joined by Justice Breyer, said such differing treatment could be justified. Justice Gorsuch, joined by Justice Alito, disagreed, saying that “the two cases share all legally salient features.”

In another concurring opinion, Justice Thomas, joined by Justice Gorsuch, said he would have ruled in favor of Mr. Phillips on free speech grounds. Mr. Phillips’s cakes are artistic expression worthy of First Amendment protection, Justice Thomas wrote, and requiring him to endorse marriages at odds with his faith violated his constitutional rights.

In dissent, Justice Ginsburg disagreed with that analysis and noted that the majority had not adopted it. She wrote that there was no reason to think that people seeing a wedding cake made by Mr. Phillips would understand it to be conveying his views on same-sex marriage.

Alliance Defending Freedom, which represented Mr. Phillips, said the ruling was a victory for religious liberty.

“Government hostility toward people of faith has no place in our society, yet the State of Colorado was openly antagonistic toward Jack’s religious beliefs about marriage,” said Kristen Waggoner, a lawyer with the group. “The court was right to condemn that. Tolerance and respect for good-faith differences of opinion are essential in a society like ours.”

The American Civil Liberties Union, which represented Mr. Mullins and Mr. Craig, said it welcomed the parts of the majority opinion that reaffirmed legal protections for gay men and lesbians.

“The court reversed the Masterpiece Cakeshop decision based on concerns unique to the case but reaffirmed its longstanding rule that states can prevent the harms of discrimination in the marketplace, including against L.G.B.T. people,” said Louise Melling, the group’s deputy legal director.

Some gay rights groups took a darker view of the decision. “The court today has offered dangerous encouragement to those who would deny civil rights to L.G.B.T. people,” said Rachel B. Tiven, the chief executive of Lambda Legal. “We will fiercely resist the coming effort that will seek to turn this ruling into a broad license to discriminate.”

Even as she dissented, Justice Ginsburg wrote that “there is much in the court’s opinion with which I agree,” quoting several passages reaffirming gay rights protections.

“Colorado law,” Justice Kennedy wrote in one, “can protect gay persons, just as it can protect other classes of individuals, in acquiring whatever products and services they choose on the same terms and conditions as are offered to other members of the public.”

Durango fire map: Wildfire rips through Colorado – Has Durango been evacuated?

DEVASTATING wildfires have ripped through Durango Colorado this weekend, burning more than 2,000 acres in a 24-hour period. Mandatory evacuations have been issued in the region after 1,900 homes are threatened by raging blaze. Has Durango been evacuated?

Durango firefighters are tackling a huge blaze that has ravaged more than 2,000 acres this weekend.

The large fire has ripped through southern Colorado this morning, placing thousands of lives at risk.

Rising temperatures and a prolonged drought in the area increased the risk of a fire in recent weeks, but officials have now had to evacuate more than 1,500 people from their homes.

The blaze near the San Juan National Forest rages at the same time a larger, more devastating fire ravages New Mexico, less than 250 miles south.

Has Durango been evacuated?

The Durango blaze began at around 10am on Friday, fuelled by strong winds that spread the fire south.

A release from the La Plata County government said: “Wind and weather conditions on Saturday helped to limit the physical growth of the fire, with 3-5 mph winds and gusts up to 10 mph.

“Ground crews worked to keep the fire on the west side of U.S. Highway 550 and air resources attacked the fire throughout the day. Air and ground crews will work as late into the evening as is safe and functional and the team will patrol the fire throughout the evening.”

As of Sunday, 825 homes have been evacuated by authorities, with another 760 homes under a pre-evacuation notice.

The blaze, known locally as the 416 fire, has covered more than 2,000 acres on the west side of the US Highway 550, ten miles north of Durango.

Firefighters have been attempting to stem the blaze, containing roughly ten percent this morning. More than 2 helicopters and air tankers flew over the blaze in an attempt to stop the wildfire from crossing the highway.

More than 25 firefighters are working to tackle the fire, spending most of Saturday afternoon battling the blaze.

La Plata County Emergency Management director Butch Knowlton said: “Right now, we’ve got some pretty erratic wind conditions that are associated with this afternoon’s red-flag warning.

“It’s almost a minute-by-minute situation up here. We make plans and then the wind changes on us and then we have to change our plans.”

Second fire in New Mexico splits firefighter attention

A second, larger blaze is also rampaging across northern New Mexico at the same time, destroying more than 30,000 acres across the weekend.

The fire has ravaged much of Ute Park in Colfax County, New Mexico, putting more than 300 properties at risk.

1,100 people have been evacuated from the region already as the blaze inches closer to the village of Cimarron on the border of the Santa Fe National Forest.

Local authorities issued a mandatory evacuation of Cimarron on Friday evening as the fire raged.
