Flight AI171 was bound for London when it crashed into residential area of Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff

The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner heading for Gatwick was carrying 242 people when it crashed minutes after taking off at 1.38pm local time from Ahmedabad, the main city in the north-western state of Gujarat.

Footage showed the aircraft climbing away from the runway then sinking back down towards the ground, before disappearing behind trees and bursting into flames. The plane crashed into a hostel housing medical students, doctors and their families in the Meghani Nagar residential area and at least 24 people on the ground died.

]]> One air traffic controller was working at the time of the fatal midair collision near Washington, D.C.’s Ronald Reagan National Airport on Wednesday, according to multiple reports.

Newsweek reached out to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Thursday via email for comment.

What To Know

The crash occurred before 9 p.m. ET on Wednesday night, involving a CRJ700 regional jet from Wichita, Kansas and a Sikorsky H-60 military helicopter. In an emailed response to Newsweek on Wednesday night, American Airlines confirmed “60 passengers and four crew members on board the aircraft.”

The search and rescue mission moved to a recovery effort on Thursday as the exact number of casualties was immediately unknown. It is believed, however, that there are no survivors. The military helicopter was carrying three soldiers on board.

]]> Mykola Oleshchuk’s dismissal thought to be linked to death of pilot and loss of plane newly delivered to Ukraine

Volodymyr Zelenskiy has fired the head of Ukraine’s air force a day after it emerged that a recently delivered F-16 jet had crashed earlier this week, killing the pilot.

“I have decided to replace the commander of the air forces … I am eternally grateful to all our military pilots,” Zelenskiy said in his evening video address on Friday, without giving a reason for the dismissal of Mykola Oleshchuk.

But Zelenskiy spoke of the need to “protect” the lives of those defending the country, suggesting the dismissal is probably related to the F-16 crash in which Lt Col Oleksiy Mes died. The arrival of the F-16s, donated by a number of European nations, was delayed due to the lengthy training programme required for pilots and ground staff to be able to operate the aircraft.

A US military aircraft with six people on board has crashed off Yakushima Island in south-western Japan.

Japan’s Coast Guard said one person had been found dead near the crash site.

Japan’s NHK broadcaster said the CV-22 Osprey hybrid plane had been trying to land at Yakushima Airport with one engine on fire. There is no US comment.

Ospreys – which can function as a helicopter and a turboprop aircraft – have been involved in a string of fatal crashes over the years.

The aircraft that went down on Wednesday was thought to be heading from Iwakuni base in the western Yamaguchi prefecture to Kadena base in the country’s south-westernmost Okinawa region.

]]> Oct. 23 (UPI) — A massive 158-vehicle pile-up in dense fog on a Louisiana interstate killed at least seven people Monday and injured more than 25 others, according to police.

The mile-long crash on Interstate 55 in Louisiana’s St. John the Baptist Parish, near New Orleans, occurred during a morning “super fog” that lowered visibility to near zero, according to Louisiana State Police.

The crash, which caused a number of vehicles to catch fire including a tanker truck carrying a hazardous liquid, shut down I-55, I-10 and I-310. I-55 remained closed in both directions throughout the night as crews continued to clear wrecked vehicles and transportation workers inspected the interstate for damage.

A respected Russian financier based in Monaco who died in a mystery helicopter crash in France had links to Moscow’s foreign intelligence, according to Ukrainian claims.

Vyacheslav Taran, 53, founder of Forex Club and Libertex, died in Villefranche-sur-Mer, confirmed the Russian embassy in Paris.

He was flying from Lausanne in Switzerland with an experienced pilot in a Monacair H130 helicopter when the crash occurred.

The pilot, aged in his 30s, was also killed, say reports. No cause has been so far established.
