Schumer pushes Senate filibuster reform to secure election legislation

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell slammed Democrats in a floor speech Wednesday for using the Jan. 6 Capitol riot to justify proposed filibuster reform to pass election legislation.

“It is surreal to hear sitting senators invoke Jan. 6 to justify breaking the rules to grab outcomes they have not earned,” said McConnell, R-Ky. “It is jaw-dropping for colleagues to propose to commemorate that by breaking the Senate themselves.”

SCHUMER TARGETS FILIBUSTER REFORM TO PASS VOTING RIGHTS LEGISLATION

McConnell’s condemnation comes one day after he accused Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., of trying “to break the Senate” by gutting the filibuster.

In a Monday letter to his Democratic colleagues, Schumer said the upper chamber would debate rule changes in an attempt to carve a path for voting reform legislation.

Schumer said the move was necessary to circumvent situations like the Jan. 6 attack that could jeopardize the legitimacy of the current democratic process.

“We must adapt,” he wrote. “The Senate was designed to evolve and has evolved many times in our history.”

But McConnell, who told Politico Wednesday that he may support making changes to the 1887 Electoral Count Act, has taken issue with making any sweeping changes to Senate rules or broader election reform.

SCHUMER TO USE JAN. 6 ANNIVERSARY TO MAKE PUSH FOR FEDERAL VOTING RIGHTS BILL

“No party that would trash the Senate’s legislation traditions can be trusted to seize control over election laws all across America,” McConnell said Wednesday from the Senate floor. “Nobody who is this desperate to take over our democracy on a one-party basis can be allowed to do it.”

“Finally, it is beyond distasteful for some of our colleagues to ham-fistedly invoke the Jan. 6 anniversary to advance these aims,” he said.

McConnell has faced criticism for his stark condemnation of filibuster reform after he amended the rule during Donald Trump’s presidency in order to confirm Supreme Court nominees by a simple majority – securing the former president three justices to the high court.

But despite the majority leader’s recent push to amend the filibuster, he continues to face an uphill battle from within his own party.

Moderate Democrat Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona have repeatedly said they do not support filibuster reform.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

This means Democrats will still need to secure 60 votes in favor of voting reform in order to pass legislation – a tough feat in a 50-50 split Senate.

Schumer has said the upper chamber will consider rule changes on or before Jan. 17 – Martin Luther King Jr. Day – in an attempt to push through voting rights legislation by simple majority and bypass the 60-vote margin needed to avoid threat of filibuster.

“It is easier to fight with someone you can present as your adversary.” That is what a senior member of Israel’s right-wing camp told me on Sunday following the announcement that then-Democratic Party candidate Joe Biden had won the presidential election.

Biden, he explained, might be a veteran friend of Israel. But, he added, the former vice president would be easier to portray as the opposite if needed. “Trump gave Israel so much that it was harder to battle him on something like the establishment of a Palestinian state,” he said. “With Biden, that will be easier.”

The conversation was telling. First, it showed what direction the post-election narrative is taking in some right-wing circles. Tzachi Hanegbi, a veteran Likud minister, made his own contribution Sunday night when he expressed grave concern over the impact Biden’s election would have on Iran, warning that it could lead to an Israeli-Iranian conflict.

And then there was a meme put out by Channel 20, a TV station joined at the hip with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In the graphic, a Hamas terrorist has his arm wrapped around the shoulder of a smiling protester against Netanyahu. Both men are waving Biden-Harris flags. The message is clear – Hamas and anti-Netanyahu protesters are happy Biden has won.

Channel 20, it is important to note, is Netanyahu’s home channel, the Israeli version of what Fox News was for Trump until it called Arizona for Biden on Election Day. It is unabashedly right-wing and completely aligned with the prime minister and his party. It is also the only station to which he regularly gives interviews.

Why is any of this important? Because, if Netanyahu wants, he can ignite a crisis with President-elect Biden. It is all a question of what he decides is more important – the image of someone who can stand up to an antagonistic president or the preservation of Israeli-American relations.

But even if politics were taken out of the mix, Israel would still have a deep-rooted problem with the Biden administration. This is not because Biden or Vice President-elect Kamala Harris are anti-Israel, but because of something deeper – an institutional problem Israel has with the Democratic Party.

Israel’s trouble with the Democratic Party is no secret and is the result of two trends – one originating in Israel and the other in the United States. Countless research papers, polls, and symposia have been written and held to discuss the challenge but here is the bottom line – Israel today is perceived in progressive circles as right-wing, nationalistic, populist, racist, and overly religious.

Just look at the way the vast majority of American Jews (70-75 %) voted for Biden while in Israel there was an overwhelming majority that preferred Trump.

Talk to a Democratic member of Congress and you will hear a mouthful. It will include criticism of the way Netanyahu has cozied up to Trump, the continued stalemate with the Palestinians, and the discrimination of progressive Jews on matters of religion and state in Israel.

EVERY CONVERSATION will also eventually get to the speech Netanyahu gave before Congress in 2015 against the Iran nuclear deal, perceived as a personal assault on President Barack Obama.

This is why with a Biden administration coming into office, Israel needs to work immediately to start repairing relations and creating new lines of communication. Time is of the essence and failure to do so will undermine Israel’s security in the Middle East.

There are a number of immediate steps that Israel can take. The first is starting to reach out already now to the Biden administration and to begin trying to influence the way its officials view topics of mutual interest.

After Trump was elected president in 2016, Israeli Ambassador Ron Dermer was spotted at Trump Tower, meeting shortly after the election with the president-elect and his team.

Israel needs to begin doing that again now. It might make sense to move up the transition between Gilad Erdan and Dermer and put the former minister, currently serving as Israel’s envoy to the UN, in Washington sooner than originally planned.

This would be so he could start meeting with Biden officials as opposed to Dermer whose his role in organizing Netanyahu’s 2015 speech burned some of his relationships with Democrats.

In addition, Israel needs to start reaching out to progressive Jewry. If Israel had a normal government, Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi would be perfectly positioned to do that. The problem is, like many other issues in Israel right now, the government simply does not get along.

There are other steps Israel could take but they include strategic thinking and planning. Different communication strategies, different narratives, and a completely different approach to minority communities.

Dani Dayan, who returned to Israel this past summer after a successful term as Israel’s counsel general to New York where he invested his time working with progressive communities, said that Israel needs to learn “democratic speech.”

“We have to show that we know how to connect to liberal values in the US,” he said. “We need a national outreach project to the Latino community and we have a chance to succeed there.”

According to Dayan, Israeli diplomats need to gain a better understanding of the different ethnicities that make up America today. “Israelis, in general, and our politicians, in particular, don’t do that partly because the political culture in Israel is conservative and right-wing,” he said.

But most importantly, he said, is for Israel to stop paying lip service to bipartisanship and to actually act like it cares about bipartisanship.

He couldn’t be more right. The time to start doing that? Yesterday.

The Fox News poll published Thursday showed that Trump and Biden are now tied with 42% each.

Biden had previously had 9 percentage points greater support than the president in the same polling from two weeks prior, with 49% to 40%, respectively.

Another 16% said they were undecided or would vote for a third-party candidate.

The poll surveyed registered voters between April 4 and April 7 and carried an error margin of +/- 3%.

“A global pandemic and Trump’s daily press conferences appear to have revved up Republicans and quieted Democratic voters,” said Republican Daron Shaw, who conducted the Fox News poll.

On Thursday, Biden claimed that the coronavirus pandemic had helped his campaign.

February 7, 2020

Weekly Update

Greetings from Tyler,

This has been a week that history will remember, for several reasons. A plague of large locusts is consuming the nations of North East Africa. But that’s not the big story. The incurable and deadly coronavirus has escaped Wuhan, China and is threatening to become a worldwide pandemic. Doctors and nurses who recognized the danger of the sickness early, from the standpoint of its lethal nature and the ease with which it is transmitted, were arrested by Chinese authorities for “spreading rumors.” The doctor credited with getting out an early warning is dead.

A number of cities in China are said to be ghost towns, with every one ordered not to leave home. You hope they have plenty of food at home and hope no delicacies came from the Wuhan market. Every report we see has hospital staff in hazmat suits. Then we hear that the people caring for the sick are also sick unto death. The things they sell for food at the market in Wuhan, China make us ill at the very thought. Not only do they sell coyote and fox pups, but bats! There it is, and since the coronavirus is thought to be an animal virus that has mutated to become a human contagion, bat soup may well be the culprit.

We don’t know if we’re getting the whole story, because the communist Chinese dictatorship appears to be covering up the magnitude of the problem. Maybe it wouldn’t have gotten to this stage in the first place if they’d dealt with it honestly. It doesn’t make any sense to report the numbers of sick or dead, because those numbers rely on Chinese reports. And “truth” is not in their vocabulary.

So, there’s a plague of locusts consuming everything in East Africa’s fertile region. There’s a pestilence that may well result in the deaths of millions. It sounds like the end-time plagues may have started, but that’s not the big news either.

This week was the time that the President’s opponents, including nearly the entirety of the media, fervently hoped that he would be convicted in the Senate and removed from office. The bug-eyed buffoon prosecuting the “case” did his utmost to shame at least a handful in the opposing party to break with the President and vote to remove him. “You know you can’t trust him!” bug-eyes said over and over again with great emotion, pleading with the Senators to get Trump out of office before he uses foreign interference to win another election later this year.

They weren’t just impeaching him for what he’d allegedly said on the phone call, or what he “intended” to be understood from the conversation, he was being impeached for what he might do because “You know you can’t trust him!”

If it were any ordinary legal or criminal case, it would have been dismissed for lack of evidence before ever seeing a courtroom. But as we were reminded every day, this wasn’t any ordinary case, it was a political action. Therefore, normal rules of evidence didn’t apply. If they had, countless hours of opinions, understandings and suppositions and hearsay from the secure basement of Congress could never have been admitted into the record. But it gave a boatload of ammo to the political assassins in the media. Everyone who thought the President had used foreign aid to coerce the president of Ukraine to announce an investigation into “his political opponent” was a brave hero. Vindman, Sondland, Ambassador Yavonovich, Misko, (Ciaramella, whose name must never be spoken), all employees of the Trump administration were all upstanding public servants for their willingness to risk their employment to oppose the President, even though they served “at his pleasure,” as the Constitution puts it.

Knowing the parties involved, as we do, it’s difficult to imagine Trump thinking he’d need such an advantage in order to deal with the awkward, gaff-laden former Vice President. But that’s what the media demanded we believe. Apparently the only thing necessary to avoid scrutiny (at least in the eyes of mainstream news) is to run for high office. Some of us (including yours truly) are wondering if that’s not the main reason former V. P. Biden decided to throw his hat into the ring in the first place.

After three years of raising the expectations of those who hate our president to a fever pitch, only to see him acquitted of all the wrongdoing they’ve alleged, it is hilarious watching them pretend to be excited about other would-be contenders in the next election. They’re promoting debates as if they were world-champion prizefights. Their promos feature percussive explosions as they zoom one oversized face after another into your living room. Bernie, Booti-whatever, Warren, Biden, in quick succession. You know this is going to be exciting! Pretty funny, after seeing these network buffoons having their hindquarters handed to them in real-time after they’d invested three and a half years in an all-out rush to get rid of Trump. You’d think they could at least come up with a half-hearted apology, but no.

We knew it before, but the last three and a half years have removed any lingering doubt. Our mainstream media is not trying to inform the public, but rather manipulate what we “know” and believe. Can you even imagine what it would be like if not for alternative sources like it was in the good ole days? Even though the public relied on only a handful of newsmen to present us what was important, at least there was some responsibility on their part to leave their personal opinions aside. That is obviously no longer the case.

Thank goodness for alternative sources. Thank God for President Trump, and this period of relief from oppressive government agencies. The mainstream information outlets cannot be trusted, except to manipulate and deceive. They’re mostly concerned about their contrived grievances, global warming and “gay” rights. The good news is that we’ve seen all the way through them, and will find out what we need to know in spite of them.

Mark
