President Donald Trump took to Twitter on July 30 to again criticize the open border agenda proposed by Democrats and tout progress at the southern border days after the Supreme Court allowed the White House to use $2.5 billion in Department of Defense funding to build a portion of the wall.

“Despite the Democrats wanting very unsafe Open Borders & refusing to change the Loopholes & Asylum, tremendous progress is being made [at] the Southern Border,” Trump wrote. “We all waited because we assumed the Dems would ultimately be forced to change the horrible Immigration Laws. They didn’t!”

Last week, the high court, ruling 5-4, lifted orders by a federal judge in California and the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco that barred the Trump administration from redirecting the Defense Department’s funds for the promised wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

The ruling will allow the White House to build a portion of the border in California, New Mexico, and Arizona.

Trump’s Twitter post also comes after news that Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) escorted a pregnant Mexican woman across the border into the United States to obtain emergency medical care.

Wyden visited Juarez, Mexico, to tour a shelter housing asylum seekers on July 27. He said while he was there he met a young woman who was 8-months pregnant and was suffering “serious medical complications.”

“She tried to get across the border but was denied until it became clear to law enforcement that I was accompanying her. She was taken to a hospital to get care,” he wrote in a series of Twitter posts.

“It shouldn’t have to take being escorted by a U.S. Senator to get asylum seekers and migrants to safety in the United States. After my time in Juarez, I’m reflecting on the hundreds—perhaps thousands—of women just like her who are unable to get the medical care they need,” he added.

Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) made a similar trip to Mexico earlier in the month where he also escorted several asylum seekers across into the United States.

This comes at a time when the crisis at the border has garnered significant attention due to the influx of illegal immigrants in recent months, and conflicting reports on the conditions in Border Patrol detention facilities.

In recent months, 2020 Democratic candidates have been coming out to express support for decriminalizing illegal border crossing. During the first Democratic presidential primary debate in late June, all but one candidate from the second night showed their support for decriminalizing illegal immigration, an indication of the Democratic Party’s position on illegal immigration.

Presidential hopeful Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) also came out earlier this month to unveil a plan in a blog post on Medium to repeal a law that makes unauthorized entry into the United States illegally.

Trevor Loudon, a communism expert, and contributor to The Epoch Times said Democratic lawmakers are pushing an open border agenda because they are losing their traditional support base and bringing migrants over could provide “a new supply of dependent voters.”

“The Democratic Party has lost its traditional union, manufacturing Midwestern base. So how do you keep winning? You have to bring new people over the border,” Loudon told The Epoch Times.

“And we know that there are 22 million illegals in the country now according to M.I.T. (Massachusetts Institute of Technology),” he said. “We know that Hillary Clinton promised to give them more citizenship and voting rights within 100 days of taking office.”

Loudon said the Democrats’ agenda could give them an extra “16, 17, 18 million new potential voters overnight.”

“And considering that Trump won the election nationwide by two hundred thousand votes and Mitt Romney lost by two and a half million votes you can see what an advantage to the Democratic Party that would be,” he said.

Loudon said in a previous interview that if a Democratic candidate were to win the 2020 presidential election, the borders would effectively be dissolved.

“There’d be no effective border security. And all the Democrat candidates are united on this—all of them. Not one of them has made a stand against what is happening on the border,” Loudon said.

“They’re all for amnesty, they’re all for welcoming illegals over the border. So you would see the end of America as we know it because we would get so many million people coming over. They would be given citizenship and voting rights, and they would vote for the party that let them in.”

WASHINGTON – The Pentagon is preparing options to build barriers on the southern border in the event that President Donald Trump declares a national emergency there, the latest indication such a move is gaining traction within the administration.

“The Department of Defense is reviewing available authorities and funding mechanisms to identify options to enable border barrier construction,” said Navy Capt. Bill Speaks, a Pentagon spokesman. “As there has not been such a declaration made, it would be inappropriate to comment further on those efforts.”

Trump is considering a declaration of a national emergency as a way to free up funds for a border wall if talks with Democrats fail to yield a deal on his signature issue.

Trump’s declaration of an emergency at the southern border would allow the Army Corps of Engineers to design barriers and allow contracts to build them. Lt. Gen. Todd Semonite, who commands the corps, accompanied Trump on his trip Thursday to tour the border in Texas, according to the White House.

Trump suggested Thursday that the declaration could happen at anytime. Talks to end the partial shutdown of the federal government between Trump and Democratic leaders fell apart Wednesday over border security.

“If this doesn’t work out, probably I will do it – I would almost say definitely,” Trump said. “We have plenty of funds if there’s a national emergency.”

Vice President Mike Pence said on Capitol Hill Thursday afternoon that Trump is determined to build a wall on the border.

“The president believes he has an absolute right to declare a national emergency,” Pence said. “The president is going to get this done one way or the other.”

Those funds would come from the Pentagon’s budget for construction projects approved by Congress but not yet spent.

Texas Rep. Mac Thornberry, the top Republican on the House Armed Services Committee, said in an interview that he opposed diverting money from the Pentagon’s, or any other department’s, budget to pay for the barriers. Diverting the money from the military would prevent it from, for example, building barracks to house troops.

The $5.7 billion Trump seeks would build 234 miles of barriers. Thornberry said he supports improved security at the border but not at the military’s expense.

The Army Corps of Engineers would probably be tasked with the project, Thornberry said. The corps would design the barriers and contract with construction firms to build it.

“My sense is that the president has a lot of discretion in this area,” Thornberry said.

Democrats vowed to challenge the declaration in court.

“I urge President Trump not to siphon taxpayer money away from military construction or family housing or vital waterway infrastructure for his wall,” Rhode Island Sen. Jack Reed, the top Democrat on the Armed Services Committee, said Thursday night. “If congressional Republicans go along with this so-called emergency, future presidents will undoubtedly try and make similar end runs around Congress’s constitutional authority. So I hope my colleagues on both sides of the aisle will take the long view and do what is best for our nation, not just one Administration.”

Sen. Doug Jones, D-Ala., a member of the committee, said Thursday that he hopes Trump doesn’t declare an emergency and divert military money to build a wall.

“Congress is concerned about the overreach, and I think the American public is concerned about the overreach of the executive branch of government right now,” Jones said.

Washington DC: The United States will send an additional 3,750 troops to its frontier with Mexico, the Pentagon said Sunday, as President Donald Trump doubled down on his call for a wall to boost border security.

Soldiers were originally deployed to the border under an order President Donald Trump gave before midterm elections in November as “caravans” of migrants made their way to the border to seek asylum from violence and poverty in their own countries.

But the mission, under which troops assist civilian border patrol agents by providing logistical support and installing concertina-wire fencing, has been described by opponents as a political stunt designed to create the illusion of a crisis.

“The Department of Defense will deploy approximately 3,750 additional US forces to provide the additional support to CBP (Customs and Border Protection) at the southwest border that Acting Secretary of Defense (Pat) Shanahan approved Jan. 11,” a statement said.

This additional deployment is for three months, the statement added, and will bring to 4,350 the total number of troops at the border. Their tasks will include “a mobile surveillance capability through the end of September 2019, as well as the emplacement of approximately 150 miles of concertina wire between ports of entry.”

The news comes ahead of a February 15 deadline that President Donald Trump set for Congress to agree on funding for building a border wall which he made a key pledge in his election campaign. The president says that existing sections of walls should be extended along the border to stop what he describes as an uncontrolled invasion of criminals.

Trump underscored these claims Sunday. “With Caravans marching through Mexico and toward our Country, Republicans must be prepared to do whatever is necessary for STRONG Border Security,” he tweeted.

“Dems do nothing. If there is no Wall, there is no Security. Human Trafficking, Drugs and Criminals of all dimensions – KEEP OUT!” Democrats, who control the lower house, have repeatedly rejected Trump’s funding demands, saying that he has made the wall project a political crusade to demonize immigrants and to satisfy his base.

He previously tried to pressure Congress into backing his idea by refusing to sign off on budgets for swathes of the federal government, leading to a five-week shutdown of some 800,000 government jobs.

The border troop deployment was one of several issues on which Trump and former defense secretary Jim Mattis disagreed before he quit in December after Trump’s shock decision to pull troops from Syria.
