The director-general of the Japanese Foreign Ministry’s Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau, Kanai Masaaki, arrived in Beijing on Monday afternoon.

During the visit, Kanai is expected to meet with Chinese officials, including the director-general of the Department of Asian Affairs of the Foreign Ministry, Liu Jinsong.

It is believed Kanai intends to explain that Takaichi’s remark about a possible Taiwan emergency did not deviate from the Japanese government’s position regarding Taiwan.

The possibility of a normalization deal was first revealed by Israel’s largest daily newspaper, Yedioth Ahronoth, on Thursday. The report said “discreet negotiations” have been underway between Israel, Indonesia, and the OECD for the past three months.

Indonesia applied to join the 38 nations of the OECD in February, but current member Israel objected to Jakarta’s accession because the OECD informally encourages all member states to have solid diplomatic relations with each other, so they can collaborate on policy decisions.

ANKARA — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will visit Turkey next week to meet his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Ankara announced on Wednesday.

The Turkish statement said the two leaders will meet on July 28 to discuss steps to improve cooperation as well as international and regional issues.

The frenemies will meet for the first time in 14 years amid swiftly improving ties after years of locking horns. The last time Netanyahu visited Turkey was in 2009, before a military raid on a Gaza-bound humanitarian aid flotilla that killed nine Turkish activists in 2010. After the incident, the two countries severed their diplomatic relations.

Several efforts to restore ties failed until last year, when Israeli President Isaac Herzog visited Turkey in March. Herzog’s visit came as part of Ankara’s regional fence-mending with its former regional foes, including Israel, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Opinions are divided in Israel’s Foreign Ministry over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Tuesday announcement on traveling soon to China, with some diplomats warning that such a trip could harm the country’s relations with the United States.

Meeting in Jerusalem with US congressional delegation members, Netanyahu informed them he has been invited by Chinese authorities to visit Beijing and intends to travel there in the near future. Israeli media reports said the trip could happen as soon as next month, marking the first for the Israeli prime minister since 2017.

Netanyahu, a skilled operator who has navigated ebb and flow relations with successive US presidents, has been snubbed by President Joe Biden and has not received an invitation yet to visit the White House — a rare occurrence for Israeli prime ministers. Lacking such an invitation, Netanyahu banned Defense Minister Yoav Gallant from traveling to Washington, who instead had to travel to Brussels, to meet Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on the margins of the NATO ministerial meeting this month. On the other hand, Israeli President Isaac Herzog is expected to travel to the United States at the end of July for a first official visit to meet with Biden and to deliver a speech before the American House of Representatives.
