Philippines calls for expelling Chinese diplomats as South China Sea row escalates

MANILA, May 10 (Reuters) – The Philippines’ national security adviser called on Friday for Chinese diplomats to be expelled over an alleged leak of a phone conversation with a Filipino admiral in a significant escalation of a bitter row over the South China Sea.

China’s embassy in Manila had orchestrated “repeated acts of engaging and dissemination of disinformation, misinformation and malinformation”, with the objective of sowing discord, division and disunity, Eduardo Ano said in a statement.

Those actions “should not be allowed to pass unsanctioned without serious penalty”, he said.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian called the comments provocative and said Chinese diplomats in the Philippines had to be allowed to do their job.

“China solemnly requests the Philippine side to effectively safeguard the normal performance of duties by Chinese diplomatic personnel, stop infringing and provoking, and refrain from denying the facts,” Lin said at a regular press briefing in Beijing.

Dozens of Russian diplomats leave Moldova after expulsion order

Moldova’s Foreign Ministry said the decision was taken following “ongoing tensions and unfriendly actions,” and that embassy staff and diplomats would have to leave by 15 August.

Several diplomats from the Russian embassy in the Republic of Moldova left the country on a charter plane on Monday morning, after being expelled in the wake of what Moldovan authorities called “unfriendly actions”.

The flight was scheduled to take off at 9:00 am (local time) with approximately 100 people on board. Among them were diplomats and technical staff from the Russian embassy, as well as their family members.

They were taken to the airport in two buses, while others seem to have left in their cars and other chartered means.

China expels Canadian diplomat in tit-for-tat move

China has expelled Canada’s consul in Shanghai in retaliation for Ottawa sending home a Chinese diplomat accused of trying to intimidate a Canadian MP.

On Monday, Canada declared China’s diplomat Zhao Wei “persona non grata” and ordered her to leave the country.

In response, China on Tuesday ordered the removal of Jennifer Lynn Lalonde, Canada’s diplomat in its Shanghai Consulate.

“China reserves the right to further react,” Beijing said in a statement.

Both diplomats have five days to exit the countries.

The censures mark a significant deterioration in relations between Ottawa and Beijing following reports of alleged Chinese political interference in Canada.

Norway expels 15 Russian spies working under diplomatic cover

April 13 (UPI) — Norway said Thursday it has ordered 15 Russian intelligence officers to leave the country for espionage.

“The 15 intelligence officers have been engaging in activities that are not compatible with their diplomatic status,” Minister of Foreign Affairs Anniken Huitfeldt said in a statement.

According to Norway’s Foreign Affairs ministry, the government decision is a response to “the changed security situation in Europe, which has led to an increased intelligence threat from Russia.”

The 15 intelligence officers have been declared persona non grata and will leave Norway soon.
