California’s record-setting 2021 wildfire season could run into December.

Tinder-box-like conditions in parched Northern California could mean fires there run all the way toward the end of the year, Anthony Scardina, deputy regional forester for the Forest Service, said, according to The Associated Press.

In Southern California, fires raging in September could burn until December as well, he said.

The 2021 wildfire season is already on pace to set a record for acreage burned, according to data from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, known as Cal Fire.

Through Thursday, fires tracked by Cal Fire and the US Forest Service had burned 1,470,637 acres — far surpassing the 920,165 scorched through that date in 2020.

Wildfires burn nearly year-round in the West, Scardina said, whereas fire seasons used to vary by region, according to AP. This creates a difficult situation for firefighters.

“But the problem is all of those seasons are starting to overlap,” Scardina told the AP. “We start to get stretched thin.”

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="" src="https://nypost.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2021/08/cali-wildfires-02.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&w=1024" alt="The Way Station Bar burns as the Dixie Fire tears through the Greenville community of Plumas County, Calif.
QUINCY, Calif.—At least eight people were missing Saturday as one of the worst wildfires in the nation scorched through Northern California communities, forest, and tinder dry scrub in the Sierra Nevada mountains, destroying a historic gold rush town.

Even as the calmer, less windy weather gave firefighters a break overnight with the Dixie fire, the third largest fire in California’s history, the Pulmas County Sheriff’s Office released the somber news.

“We have received reports of eight unaccounted for individuals,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement, asking for the public’s help in finding them.

Five of the missing belong to the old mining town of Greenville where blazes leveled most of its downtown, about 160 miles north of Sacramento.

Greenville, with a population 800, was founded more than 150 years ago when nearby gold mines attracted settlers and merchants to the picturesque town in the Indian Valley.

Most of its downtown was left in ashes. More than 184 structures were destroyed in the town and across the area.

Nearly 447,000 acres have already burned in the Dixie fire and it was 21 percent contained by mid-afternoon, said Edwin Zuniga, a firefighter and spokesman for Cal Fire, the combined firefighting agencies battling the blaze.

“We’re hoping to gain ground,” Zuniga said. “There are favorable weather conditions, with less wind and a blanket of smoke that blocks direct sunlight. It allows a higher humidity which helps us.”

Earlier in the week the fire was reported as 35 percent contained, but better mapping clarified the area, officials said.

The cause of the fire is listed as unknown but remains under investigation.
