The Democratic impeachment claim that President Trump spurred the attack on the U.S. Capitol by whipping his supporters into a violent mob is coming under scrutiny as evidence mounts that the siege was not spontaneous but planned well in advance.

The release of initial court documents show that at least two suspects arrived on or before Jan. 6 armed with explosives, tactical gear and caches of weapons. Facebook has come under fire for failing to remove “Stop the Steal” pages allegedly used by organizers weeks and even months ahead of the rally.

Also emerging are media reports that investigators believe the assault was coordinated and “not just a protest that spiraled out of control,” as CNN reported Thursday, and that the FBI knew beforehand of plans for a “war” at the Capitol, as per The Washington Post.

Donald Trump Jr. connected the dots Thursday after flagging an interview with Just the News editor John Solomon, who said the FBI, the New York Police Department and the U.S. Capitol Police had intelligence about the possibility of an organized siege.

“If these federal law enforcement agencies had prior knowledge that this was a planned attack then POTUS didn’t incite anything,” the president’s son tweeted. “If he didn’t incite anything then Nancy Pelosi and the Dems used impeachment on yet another sham political witch-hunt.”

The indications that the rioting was planned appear to run counter to House Democrats’ argument that Mr. Trump’s speech “foreseeably resulted in” the rioting, which saw thousands invade the Capitol building in a melee that led to five deaths.

Conservative media figures also have taken note. “The more that comes out about this, the more we realize this was a massively pre-planned event, and so the impeachment articles have less sway,” said the Federalist’s Mollie Hemingway on Fox News.

“And the more people calm down and start thinking clearly, it seems like we’re just experiencing yet another one of these events where the media rush to conclusions,” she said.

“This is not going quite as well as Democrats had hoped for.”

The House voted 232-197 Tuesday to approve a single Article of Impeachment for “incitement of insurrection” that featured as its centerpiece Mr. Trump’s comments at the Save America rally before rioters descended on the Capitol during a joint session of Congress to certify the 2020 election results.

“Shortly before the Joint Session commenced, President Trump, addressed a crowd at the Ellipse in Washington, D.C.,” the document reads. “There, he reiterated false claims that ‘we won this election, and we won it by a landslide.’ He also willfully made statements that, in context, encouraged — and foreseeably resulted in — lawless action at the Capitol, such as: ‘if you don’t fight like hell you’re not going to have a country anymore.’”

“Thus incited by President Trump, members of the crowd he had addressed, in an attempt to, among other objectives, interfere with the Joint Session’s solemn constitutional duty to certify the results of the 2020 Presidential election,” the document states.

The Article of Impeachment also accuses Mr. Trump of repeatedly making “false statements” about election fraud in the months leading up to the attack, as well as seeking to obstruct the 2020 presidential election results with his Jan. 2 call urging Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to “find” votes.
Not until the attack on the Capitol did House Democrats launch the impeachment drive.

During the floor debate, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi drew a direct line between the president’s speech and the rioting.

“They were domestic terrorists, and justice must prevail, but they did not appear out of a vacuum,” the California Democrat said. “They were sent here, sent here by the president with words such as a cry to ‘fight like hell.’ Words matter. Truth matters. Accountability matters.”

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler said that the president’s “lies and violent rhetoric reached their crescendo” in the Jan. 6 speech.

“At that rally, the president took the stage,” said Mr. Nadler, New York Democrat. “After reiterating the falsehood that ‘we won this election, and we won it by a landslide,’ he told the crowd, ‘if you don’t fight like hell, you’re not going to have a country anymore,’ and then he urged the mob to walk down Pennsylvania Avenue to prevent the Congress from confirming the election of an illegitimate president.”

He continued: “On that day, President Trump unleashed the force of a mob on this, the people’s House. He encouraged that attack with the explicit intent to disrupt the joint session of Congress.”

Republicans, starting with Rep. Tom McClintock of California, disputed that characterization of Mr. Trump’s remarks.

“I didn’t like the president’s speech on Jan. 6, either,” Mr. McClintock said. “But what did he actually say? His exact words were, quote, I know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard, unquote.”

Mr. McClintock said that if Congress “impeached every politician who gave a fiery speech to a crowd of partisans, this capitol would be deserted.”

Sen. Rand Paul, Kentucky Republican, took aim at Facebook, which suspended the account of his father, former Rep. Ron Paul, after the rioting, citing a report that Trump supporters used the platform to organize bus trips to Washington, D.C.

Tweeted Mr. Paul: “Instead of canceling people, Facebook should look in the mirror.”

In a Monday interview with Reuters, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg pointed to smaller platforms, saying that “these events were largely organized on platforms that don’t have our abilities to stop hate.” Two days later, New Republic writer Melissa Gira Grant called on her to resign over her “denials about the platform’s role in the violence.”

Impeachment is a political act, not a legal one, although experts have debated whether Mr. Trump’s comments constituted incitement under the law.

Garrett Epps, professor emeritus for the University of Baltimore School of Law, said in an analysis for the BBC that incitement must be both likely to and intended to cause violence, and that in Mr. Trump’s case, “it’s an agonizingly close call.”

Is it possible to incite someone to violence if they already plan to commit a violent act? The answer is yes, he said.

“As I read the applicable law, it isn’t necessary to prove that inciting language was the sole cause of the lawless action — remember that in fact, under the test, lawless action doesn’t actually have to happen, if it is ‘directed to and likely to’ cause it,” Mr. Epps said in an email to The Washington Times. “And the fact that members of the crowd were prepared to behave violently, it seems to me, makes the case against Trump a bit stronger — because it can be argued that it makes his speech more ‘likely to cause imminent lawless action.’”

Rep. Brian Mast, Florida Republican, urged Democrats not to rush to impeachment, arguing that the rioters themselves should be questioned to discover the factors and influences behind their wrongdoing.

“Nobody was asked, did you do this because of the president? Did you do it because of something he said a year ago, or because of something somebody like [Rudolph W.] Giuliani said Jan. 6?” Mr. Mast said on “Fox & Friends.” “Did you go there because of the president, but violence was your own thing? Did he tell you to be peaceful?”

He added: “Nobody can say that they spoke to one of those individuals, and that’s got to be the most dangerous precedent for this body to set, to say, if you’re an American out there, this is how we’re going to hold you accountable for inciting somebody else.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is not expected to take up the Article of Impeachment until the chamber reconvenes on Jan. 19 — the day before President-elect Joseph R. Biden is inaugurated — during which time the evidence of prior organization could dissipate — or grow.

“It’s now being reported all over the media — and the Democrats are pushing this — that the riot we saw Wednesday was planned, it was organized, all these groups were planning and plotting it all along,” said Steve Hilton, host of Fox News’ “The Next Revolution.” “So if it was planned, how is it that the president suddenly incited it on the day? So none of it actually makes sense.”

Politicians and public figures in Israel and the US sent their condolences to the family of Sheldon Adelson, after the 87-year-old Jewish tycoon passed away on Tuesday.

“[My wife] Sara and I are heartbroken by the passing of Sheldon Adelson,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement, adding that Jews in Israel and abroad mourn his loss.

“He was a wonderful friend to us personally and an incredible champion of the Jewish people, the Jewish state, and the alliance between Israel and America,” he said. “Sheldon unabashedly loved America and cherished the freedom and opportunity it gave him. He worked tirelessly to ensure that very same freedom and opportunity would be given to others in America and around the world.

“The warmth of his heart, the clarity of his thinking, and the decisiveness of his actions were truly exceptional.”

Adelson’s importance not just to Israel, but to global Jewry, was emphasized in a statement by Jewish Agency Chairman Isaac Herzog, who called him “the modern Montefiore, the breaker of the walls and the builder of Jerusalem.”

“I had the privilege of having had a deep personal connection with him for many years,” Herzog said. “Without a doubt, he was one of this generation’s great Jewish leaders.

“He always stood out for his kind attitude, openness, modesty, and accessibility, and even when we disagreed, I loved him very much.”
Outgoing US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stated that Adelson’s life “represents the best of the American dream.”

“From his service to his country in the US Army to his entrepreneurial spirit to his efforts to strengthen the alliance between Israel and the US, Sheldon’s life was one of great consequence,” Pompeo’s statement reads.

The world, Israel, and the US are safer because of his work, Pompeo explained. “His philanthropic giving has impacted the world of medicine, education, and the lives of Jewish-Americans. His political involvement strengthened our democracy.”

“Our nation lost a remarkable man with the passing of my friend Sheldon Adelson,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in a statement.

Adelson “poured his success into philanthropy,” the Senate’s top Republican continued, “from drug abuse treatment to research into cancer and other diseases to the countless Jewish causes around the world that were especially close to his heart.”

DONALD TRUMP JR. wrote in response to Adelson’s passing that “Sheldon was a true American patriot and a giant among men. He treated his employees like family. His philanthropic generosity changed countless lives.” He added that “The US-Israel relationship is stronger today because of him.”

Former US president George W. Bush dubbed Adelson an “American patriot” who “battled his way out of a tough Boston neighborhood to build a successful enterprise.”

In a statement, the Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) praised Adelson for being “one of the most consequential figures in American Jewish history,” calling him “an extraordinary philanthropist and a dear mentor and friend.”

Birthright called Sheldon “A man of vision, action, Zionism, and inspiration,” adding that, “Over the years we were both honored and humbled to work alongside the Adelson family, which ultimately guarantees the future of the Jewish people.”

Health Minister Yuli Edelstein wrote that “The late Sheldon Adelson was a Zionist in all he did; a warm Jew with a great love for the State of Israel.

“His activity in Israel and around the world for the state was well known. His passing is a loss to all lovers of Israel,” Edelstein added.

“During my time as chairman of the steering committee of Birthright, Sheldon was one of the program’s great contributors,” the minister wrote. “I saw up close his deeds, dedication, caring, and generosity. I saw up close how important Zionism was to him, just like his father’s legacy, as he used to point out. May his memory be blessed.”

Yaakov Hagoel, chairman of the World Zionist Organization, also expressed his condolences in a statement, calling Adelson “one of the greatest supporters and contributors in our generation for Zionism, Israel, and the Jewish people.”

“We received the news about the passing of Sheldon G. Adelson with a heavy heart and great sadness,” the Israeli-American Council (IAC) said in a statement, mourning “the loss of our visionary, mentor and true friend.

“Sheldon’s unequivocal love of Israel and of the Jewish people will be a legacy that will always inspire us. We will greatly miss his wisdom, leadership, and dedication, and we will strive to continue to fulfill his vision in support of Israel and of the Jewish people.”

Outgoing US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman took to Twitter to mourn the loss of “the greatest of Jewish philanthropists.”

“While blessed with vast wealth, he had exceptional humility and faith,” he tweeted. “No one will fill his shoes.”

“The Jewish people mourn one of its proudest sons, Sheldon Adelson z”l, who devoted himself to strengthening his people, his homeland, and the bonds between his beloved America and Israel,” Israeli Ambassador to the US Ron Dermer said over Twitter.

“He was a true giant, as good as he was great, whose memory will never be forgotten.”

“We look forward to seeing this hoax wrap up very soon,” Sarah Huckabee Sanders said. | Alex Brandon/AP

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Thursday that President Donald Trump hopes special counsel Robert Mueller will wrap up his “hoax” investigation soon, and she said lawmakers should “absolutely” look into what they view as election-related wrongdoing under the previous administration.

Sanders said Trump does not intend to fire Mueller, whose team is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election, including any ties to Trump campaign officials. But the White House spokeswoman also took aim at the probe’s legitimacy.

“We have no intentions of firing Bob Mueller. We are continuing to work closely and cooperate with him,” Sanders said on Fox News. “We look forward to seeing this hoax wrap up very soon.”

Sanders was asked whether she agreed with Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who tweetedon Thursday that it was “time to investigate high ranking Obama government officials who might have colluded to prevent the election of @realDonaldTrump!”

“I think it’s something that certainly should be looked at,” Sanders said.

Paul also suggested during an interview on Fox News that members of the intelligence community may have conspired to keep Trump out of the White House. Pressed on whether the White House agreed with the senator’s sentiment, Sanders said an investigation into the matter would be worthwhile.

“I haven’t asked [the president] directly about Sen. Paul’s statement. I think the senator, if he feels there is something to be looked at, we absolutely should be looking at that,” she said.

Trump has repeatedly dismissed the ongoing probe into ties between his campaign aides and foreign officials as a “hoax” and a “witch hunt.”

The president’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., similarly floated Tuesday that government officials were conspiring against his father.

“There is, and there are, people at the highest levels of government that don’t want to let America be America,” Trump Jr. told a group of young conservatives in Florida.

CNN has had a rough 2017 and it’s not even over yet. The news network has repeatedly made key errors when breaking big stories, only to get embarrassed when the facts come to light.

Here are seven times CNN botched the news in 2017.

Comey Testimony
CNN ran a story on June 6 that claimed former FBI Director James Comey would use his testimony the next day to refute President Donald Trump’s claim that Comey had assured him three separate times that he was not under FBI investigation. That story was debunked the same day when Comey’s prepared remarks were released to the public, showing that Comey would actually confirm, rather than refute, Trump’s assertion.

The botched story had four bylines, including those of three veteran journalists: anchor Jake Tapper, chief political analyst Gloria Borger and executive editor Eric Lichtblau, who had recently joined CNN from The New York Times. CNN was forced to rewrite the piece with a correction noting the error.

CNN Smears Scaramucci
Later that month, CNN.com published, deleted, and then retracted and apologized for an article that claimed Trump adviser Anthony Scaramucci was the subject of a Senate investigation for his ties to Russian bankers. After an intense public backlash, three key members of CNN’s investigative team resigned over their role in the retracted story. The network pulled its investigative team off the Russia story shortly afterwards. (RELATED: Wolf Blitzer Humiliates Colleague Over Quality Of Her White House Sources [VIDEO])

CNN Spreads Fake News…About Fake News!
CNN was one of several establishment media outlets to spread fake news about a new study on Russian influence efforts in the United States. CNN cited the study, from the Oxford Internet Institute, to show that fake news targeted swing states during election week. But the study didn’t show that, as The Daily Caller first reported.

The study focused on “junk news,” not “fake news,” and then deliberately included conservative outlets like the Washington Examiner and Breitbart News in their definition of “fake news.” CNN and other outlets included none of those facts, portraying a misleading picture to the public.

Republican Donor Did (Not) Fund The Dossier
CNN spread fake news to its viewers during a segment on the infamous anti-Trump dossier in October. While CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer discussed the dossier, the chyron on his show indicated that a Republican donor had initially funded the dossier. That is incorrect. The opposition research firm behind the dossier, Fusion GPS, had contracted with Republican donor Paul Singer for research on candidates including Trump, but that was unrelated to the controversial dossier.

Fake (Fish) News
During President Trump’s visit to Japan last month, CNN spread two false narratives about the president. The first false narrative was that Trump committed a faux pas while feeding Japanese koi fish by impatiently pouring out his entire box of fish food. CNN zoomed in close on Trump while he and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe were feeding the fish, appearing to show the president making the embarrassing mistake. The video went viral and Trump was mocked on social media.

The full video, however, showed that Trump followed Abe’s lead and only dumped out his box of fish food after his host had done the same.

Trump Is (Not) Ignorant Of Japanese Cars
In the second false narrative that CNN spread during Trump’s Japan visit, the network took the president’s words out of context to make him appear ignorant of the fact that Japan makes cars in the United States. “Trump asks Japan to build cars in the U.S. It already does,” CNN Money’s Daniel Shane wrote.

As TheDC’s Alex Pfeiffer noted at the time, Trump’s full remarks — which Shane left out — clearly showed that Trump was aware of the fact that Japan makes cars in the U.S. His remark, which CNN took seriously, appeared to be a joke.

CNN Botches Another ‘Bombshell’
CNN botched another “bombshell” on Friday when it reported that Donald Trump Jr. and the Trump campaign had received advanced access to stolen emails published by WikiLeaks. The network hyped the story as a bombshell for most of the day before TheDC’s Chuck Ross debunked it, revealing several serious errors with the story.
