The stagnant economy has caused enormous political problems in Berlin, where tax revenue is nowhere near enough to pay for the perennially growing demands on the welfare state. Like in most of Europe, the stagnant German economy is also permanently impoverishing the young generation.

Echoing these frustrations, on January 5, Deutsche Wellebusiness writer Arthur Sullivan asked if 2026 will be the year when Germany breaks free from its economic stagnation:

Any return to economic growth in Germany in 2026 is expected to be slower and weaker than previously anticipated, according to several economic forecasts.

As EU car companies struggle with the phasing out of combustion engines and a transition to electric vehicles before 2035, experts are predicting that thousands more jobs may be cut across different sectors over the next couple of years.

DIW President, Marcel Fratzscher, says that the German economy is both export and industry dependent, and in the face of the energy transition, “companies have missed out on the transformation,” and that many, such as VW, have “fallen behind”.

The precious metal has rallied more than 20% this year on anticipation that interest rates could eventually ease. Since gold offers no yield, traders consider it a better investment when central banks slash rates.

For this same reason, spot gold jumped as much as 1.8% on Friday as fresh housing data gave investors renewed reason to bet on lower interest rates.

This finding adds on to concerns over the economy’s strength, especially after recent weakness in inflation and labor prints.

Western companies that sell their Russian assets restricted from taking proceeds in dollars and euros

Russia has reportedly imposed additional currency controls in an attempt to prop up the falling rouble, restricting western companies that sell their Russian assets from taking the proceeds in dollars and euros.

International companies that want to exit Russia after its invasion of Ukraine have to sell their assets in roubles under new government restrictions, according to the Financial Times, which cited people familiar with the matter.

If they insist on receiving foreign currency for their assets, they face delays or even losses on the sums that can be transferred abroad, the FT reported.

The rouble has weakened since Moscow’s tanks rolled into Ukraine in February last year. The war prompted western countries to impose sanctions on Russia, hitting its currency and wider economy. The rouble has lost more than 20% of its value against the dollar this year, sliding past the psychologically important level of 100 roubles to the US currency in August.

The trigger for Tuesday’s stock slide was China announcing a much smaller interest rate reduction than anticipated. Reuters quoted economists who found Beijing’s policy moves profoundly disappointing, although some held out hope for strong action after the next Politburo meeting in July:

“The aim (of China’s rate cut) is to bolster lending, but investors appear a little underwhelmed by the action and are waiting until further moves promised to bolster the economy materialize,” said Susannah Streeter, head of money and markets at Hargreaves Lansdown.Analysts at BofA global research said in a note that “such marginal easing” would likely help prevent growth from slowing sharply, but was “unlikely to offer a strong boost to reverse the growth slippage in the near future”.

Bloomberg News suggested bigger rate cuts were withheld for political reasons, specifically the reluctance of the Chinese regime to promote real estate speculation:
