White House announces South American trade deals to try to lower some food prices

They could bring down prices on products like coffee, bananas and beef.

The White House on Thursday during a background call with reporters announced framework deals with Argentina, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Ecuador that it hopes will bring down the costs of certain groceries.

These deals come after President Donald Trump and some of his top allies promised an announcement on a deal to help alleviate the price increases of bananas, coffee and other agricultural goods, but a senior administration official on the call could not provide any specifics about how much relief this would bring to Americans’ wallets.

According to data from the September 2025 Consumer Price Index, coffee prices have spiked 18.9%, bananas are up 6.9% and beef prices are up 14.7% in the past year.

Ecuador Mayor Killed Amid Anti-Gang State of Emergency

QUITO, ECUADOR — An Ecuadoran mayor was found shot to death Sunday, police said, as the South American country approaches its third month of a state of emergency decreed by the government to crack down on soaring gang violence.

Brigitte Garcia, the 27-year-old mayor of coastal San Vicente, was found dead along with the municipality’s communications director, Jairo Loor.

During the early hours of the morning “two people were identified inside a vehicle without vital signs, with gunshot wounds,” the Ecuadoran national police said on X, formerly Twitter.

Later, it added that the shots “were not fired from the outside of the vehicle but from the inside.” Investigators are still analyzing the route taken by the car, which had been rented.

Daniel Noboa designates nearly two dozen gangs as terrorist groups after wave of violence across country

Ecuador’s president, Daniel Noboa, said on Wednesday that his country was “at war” with drug gangs who are holding more than 130 prison staff hostage and who briefly captured a TV station live on air, in a wave of violence that has left city streets deserted.

At least 10 people have been killed, including police officers, in the attacks.

In images that went around the world, gunmen stormed a TV station during a live broadcast on Tuesday before being captured by police special forces. Videos on social media showed a gruesome series of other attacks including car bombs, the murder of police officers in the street, the apparent lynching of prison guards and attempted takeovers of hospitals and a university in Guayaquil. The Ecuadorian police confirmed two officers had been killed.

Guillermo Lasso: Ecuador’s President dissolves parliament

Ecuadorean President Guillermo Lasso has dissolved the opposition-controlled parliament amid an impeachment trial.

He had been accused of turning a blind eye to alleged embezzlement and was facing an imminent vote that could have ousted him from office.

Mr Lasso, a conservative, said the charges were politically motivated.

He will now have up to six months to govern by decree – without the input from lawmakers – before fresh general elections are held.

The constitutional clause Mr Lasso invoked in order to disband the National Assembly and order early elections to be held is known as “muerte cruzada” (mutual death).

It was introduced in 2008 and has never been used in Ecuador before. It is seen as an extreme measure and is expected to trigger protests from opposition groups.

Chaos in Ecuador as protesters ransack govt buildings, clash with police as military restricts movement throughout country

Ecuador’s President Lenin Moreno has declared a curfew and sent in troops to force protesters off the streets of the capital Quito. He also agreed to assess the cancellation of fuel subsidies that had triggered the unrest.

Moreno has announced that he’s introducing a curfew and the “militarization” of Quito, starting at 8 pm GMT on Saturday. “This will facilitate the use of public force in the face of intolerable excess of violence,” he said on Twitter. Ecuador’s armed forces also announced late on Saturday that movement around the country would be restricted for 24 hours.

Due to “the complexity of the situation,” Moreno will take another look at Decree 883, which has enraged citizens, Quito Mayor Jorge Yunda Machado announced on Twitter.

The move was one of the austerity measures introduced by the government in order to meet the conditions of a $4.2 billion loan deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Moreno later said that he would assess the impact of the cuts, but didn’t indicate whether he was planning to repeal it.

The president also offered to begin talks with protest leaders to settle the crisis, and they have accepted his invitation.

One of the conditions was that the talks be held in public and be broadcast live. “We’re not going to talk behind closed doors. It has to be with the Ecuadorian people,” one of the protest leaders said.

Footage from Quito on Saturday resembled a war zone, with barricades, fires, and plumes of tear gas fired by the police at the raging crowds.

Live feed by RT’s video agency Ruptly showed thick smoke in the air and crowds of people rioting, as sounds of explosions rocked the streets.

The protesters, mainly represented by Ecuador’s indigenous people, set the Comptroller General’s Office on fire and ravaged the parliament building, breaking windows and throwing furniture into the street. The demonstrators also blocked all roads leading to Quito International Airport.

The administrative buildings taken over by the protesters were empty, as Moreno had already moved the government to the city of Guayaquil, located 250km southwest of Quito.

It was the capital’s 10th straight day of unrest, which broke out after the government announced austerity measures. The suspension of fuel subsidies saw the price of gasoline spike from $1.85 to $2.39 per gallon, while diesel prices went up by a staggering 123 percent – from $1.03 to $2.29.

Five people have been killed and over 1,000 wounded in clashes since October 3, according to government data. The police have arrested over 1,100 demonstrators.

Moreno was previously reluctant to reconsider the harsh measures, and blamed former president, Rafael Correa, and his Venezuelan ally Nicolas Maduro, of masterminding the demonstrations.

A 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck near the border of Ecuador and Peru early Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The earthquake struck 71 miles east of Palora with a depth of 82 miles. Another 5.5 tremblor was then felt about 9 miles southeast of Duran.

6.0 earthquake strikes Ecuador’s coast

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck along the coast of Ecuador on Sunday in the same area where a deadly tremor left hundreds dead last year.

President Lenin Moreno said there were no immediate reports of victims or major damage from the quake, which jolted many Ecuadoreans who were still in bed shortly after 6 a.m. It was felt in 12 provinces across the country.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake, with a depth of 15.5 miles, was centered around the town of San Vicente, just northeast of Bahia de Caraquez.

Authorities said that there wasn’t a risk of a tsunami and appealed for calm.

They also expressed optimism that Ecuadoreans were better prepared for a natural disaster after rebuilding from last year’s magnitude 7.8 quake along the Pacific coast that left more than 600 people dead and thousands more injured and homeless.

“We’ve made some giant steps and are much more prepared than we were in the past,” said Ricardo Penaherrera, a top official with Ecuador’s agency for risk management, pointing out that authorities carried out an earthquake drill last week in the same area where Sunday’s quake took place.

He said authorities were still canvassing coastal areas for damage but that other than knocking out power in some rural areas there were no immediate reports of major damage.

Fabricio Diaz, governor of Manabi province, said emergency dispatchers received just 38 phone calls, the majority from residents inquiring about the quake’s epicenter rather than reporting damage. The province’s ports, dams and major roadways were unaffected, he said.
