US military financing for Egypt is set to reach $1.3bn in 2024, as Israel’s war on Gaza continues

The Biden administration has decided to release $320m in military aid to Egypt – a package previously contingent on improving human rights issues in the country.

Unless Congress steps in, this brings the total amount from Washington to Cairo this year to $1.3bn. Egypt has long been the second-highest recipient of US military aid after Israel.

The administration notified Congress of the move on Wednesday, after Secretary of State Antony Blinken invoked his waiver power to approve the funds. The amount included a $95m portion requiring special certification because it was conditioned on “clear and consistent progress” regarding the release of political prisoners in Egypt.

In a statement, the Middle East Democracy Center, a Washington-based advocacy group, called the decision a “betrayal” by an administration that pledged to make human rights central to the US-Egypt bilateral relationship.

The visit follows Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan’s trip to Cairo in February. Talks will focus on regional cooperation and joint initiatives in various sectors.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi made a landmark visit to Ankara on Wednesday, marking the first presidential visit between Egypt and Turkey in 12 years. This visit comes as both nations work to mend a decade-long strained relationship.

Earlier this year, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan visited Cairo for the first time since 2012, signalling a significant step toward restoration of ties. Relations had soured in 2013 following the ousting of Egypt’s then-president, Mohamed Mursi, an ally of Turkey.

Sharp food price rises caused Egypt’s headline inflation to spike to 38.2% for the month of July, a record high amid a national economic crisis, data from the country’s Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) showed Thursday.

Headline inflation includes commodities, services, fuel, food and goods, while core inflation does not include food and fuel.

July’s headline inflation numbers broke the all-time high of 36.8% in June. July 2022’s inflation was 14.6%.

Month-on-month, prices rose by 2% in July, the same rise as seen in June, the CAPMAS data showed.

Reuters reported that the median forecast of 15 analysts showed annual urban consumer inflation rising to 36.5% in July, with a previous high of 32.95% in July 2017.

CAPMAS said that increases in the prices of cereal, bread, meat and dairy meant food and drink prices rose by an annual 68.2% in July.

Researchers discovered chamber inside Egyptian Great Pyramid using modern scanning equipment

Egyptian officials revealed the discovery of a mysterious, 30-foot-long corridor sealed off inside one of the Pyramids of Giza on Thursday.

Egyptian Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Ahmed Issa described the discovery in a Thursday press event, saying the chamber is thought to be some 4,500 years old. The corridor, which lies above the main entrance to the Pyramid of Khufu, is nearly 30 feet long and roughly 6 feet wide.

The area went undetected by archeologists for hundreds of years and was only discovered now thanks to modern scanning equipment. Issa credited the international Scan Pyramids Project (SPP) for making the find.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad threaten a military confrontation if Israel does not meet their demands by January 13.

Senior Egyptian sources told the Al-Rai Al-Aam newspaper on Thursday that Hamas and Islamic Jihad are pessimistic about the indirect negotiations with Israel and are accusing the Jewish state of procrastinating when it comes to implementing the understandings on the lifting of the “siege” on the Gaza Strip and promoting reconstruction of the Strip from the fighting in May of last year.

In an interview with the newspaper, these sources said that the Egyptians had separate talks with the leaders of Hamas and Islamic Jihad in which they discussed the “deteriorating situation” in the Gaza Strip.

According to the report, the Palestinian Arab terrorist organizations have agreed to issue an ultimatum to Israel of next Thursday, January 13, by which it must take practical steps to ease the siege and remove all obstacles to reconstruction operations.

Senior members of these organizations made it clear to the Egyptian mediator that their patience with Israeli policy in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria and the Gaza Strip and in prisons was running out, and if Israel continues its policies of “provocation” and “procrastination”, then on January 13 “all possibilities would be open.”

This “angry message” was conveyed to Israel by the Egyptian mediator who is working to prevent another round of military confrontation, the report said.
