Having just written the monthly letter, the realization struck me that nothing had been said about the war in Ukraine. We’re not hearing much. I wonder why.

Sobering photos show hundreds of migrants camped out in the streets of El Paso overnight Monday, as the Texas city’s emergency order went into effect in anticipation of the end of Title 42.

The asylum seekers are seen in the images on makeshift beds constructed out of cardboard and sheets, holding their belongings close, as border towns brace for an anticipated flood of migrants once Title 42 is lifted on May 11.

Throngs of migrants were packed tightly on El Paso streets and sidewalks into the early hours, with some taking rest while lying across blankets while others sat perched on the curb.

The asylum seekers photographed in the epicenter of the border crisis appeared to mainly be adults.

The House’s top investigator revealed a probe Friday into the attempt to cleanse El Paso, Texas, before President Biden’s first border trip earlier this month, demanding Homeland Security reveal whether it was part of the effort.

Rep. James Comer, Kentucky Republican, said Mr. Biden’s ballyhooed trip avoided any encounters with the actual chaos of the border, instead delivering a “staged version” of the border to the president that hid the realities communities are facing.

Migrant encampments that had plagued El Paso for months, and which spurred an emergency declaration by the city’s Democratic mayor, were cleared just before Mr. Biden’s visit.

And Homeland Security’s migrant processing facility, which had been bursting, was quickly cut to below its 1,000-person capacity, Mr. Comer said, citing news reports.

In Del Rio Sector alone, there have been over 50 large groups of more than 100 migrants since Oct. 1

A massive group of illegal migrants Monday crossed into the U.S. waving a large Venezuelan flag and, according to Customs and Border Protection (CBP), attacked Border Patrol agents before being pushed back into the river as agents used crowd-control measures.

The incident, partially caught on video, saw a group of Venezuelan migrants crossing illegally into El Paso, Texas, as they waved the enormous flag. Agents can be seen pushing migrants back into the river while firing pepper balls near them to control the crowd.

In a statement, CBP said a group of Venezuelans had attempted to illegally enter the U.S. while protesting along the Rio Grande’s international boundary.

The agency said one of the protesters assaulted an agent with a flagpole while another threw a rock at agents, injuring one in the process. That in turn led Border Patrol to initiate crowd-control measures.

Vice President Kamala Harris finally visited the US-Mexico border on Friday — but toured an area far from the epicenter of the migrant crisis in what critics slammed as rush-job to get ahead of a visit next week by former President Donald Trump.

Harris was appointed 94 days ago to lead the Biden administration’s response to a surge in illegal immigration and got defensive when asked about the timing of the quick stopover en route to her home state of California.

“It’s not my first trip. I’ve been to the border many times,” Harris snapped after walking down the steps of Air Force Two for the approximately five-hour stop in El Paso, Texas.

Harris added, “I said back in March I was going to come to the border, so this is not a new plan” — apparently referring to the moment she laughed and said “not today!” when asked when she would visit.

The number of migrant apprehensions spiked this year, following the Biden administration’s rollback on former President Donald Trump’s border policies. Border busts hit a 21-year monthly high in May, unabated by Harris’ mission to address the “root causes.”

Harris drew fire from leaders of the Border Patrol’s labor union for choosing to visit one of the least-chaotic stretches of the border — and was greeted in Texas by pro-Trump protesters.

“You don’t go to El Paso to see what is actually going on at the border,” said Brandon Judd, president of the National Border Patrol Council, in a Fox News interview.

Judd said that the El Paso sector is relatively well-secured and that Harris should have visited McAllen, Texas, to see where the most migrant apprehensions are happening or Tucson, Ariz., to see where the most migrants are successfully evading authorities.

The vice president of the Border Patrol’s union, Art Del Cueto, called Harris’ choice of El Paso a “slap in the face.”

“If she really wanted to see what was going on, she would go to the hot zones,” Del Cueto told Fox.

Harris was accompanied to Texas by Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-Texas), and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

Escobar welcomed migrants to El Paso, saying on the tarmac that it was “the new Ellis Island” and “the capital of the border.”

Harris said on the tarmac, “We are here today to address and to talk about what has brought people to the US border. And again, to continue to address the root causes which cause people to leave and often flee their home country.”

Harris said her trip is happening now because she first wanted to visit Latin America.

“The important aspect of this visit is leading this visit after the work that we did in Guatemala and Mexico… The reality of it is that we have to deal with causes and we have to deal with the effects,” she said.

“So being in Guatemala, being in Mexico, talking with Mexico as a partner, frankly, on the issue, was about addressing the causes. And then coming to the border at the advice and actually the invitation of [Escobar], is about looking at the effects of what we have seen happening in Central America.”

Harris added: “I’m glad to be here. It was always the plan to come here. And I think we’re gonna have a good and productive day.”

After leaving the tarmac, she departed for the El Paso Border Patrol Station, where she met and spoke with agents on the frontlines involved in catching and processing migrants.

Speaking to a group of agents while outside the facility, which does not shelter individuals, one officer told the VP that El Paso was a “very vibrant city.”

All wore masks both in and outside, making it hard to decipher what Harris was saying for much of the tour.

At one point, she congratulated officers in the station for how they had streamlined parts of their processing program, though it was unclear what specifically she was praising.

Those leading the tour then took the delegation to see more of the facility.

After leaving, Harris will head to a meeting with “faith-based” organizations, as well as “shelter and legal service providers.”

The trip — Harris’ first in the more than three months since President Biden tapped her to handle the record-smashing surge of illegal immigration — comes amid bipartisan criticism of the administration’s handling of the crisis.

Asked about her trip while speaking to Newsmax in an interview Friday morning, former President Trump said he supported her making the journey — as long as she actually visited locations impacted by the crisis, as opposed to her planned tour of “a part of the border that is seldom violated.”

“I think she should go to the border,” the 45th commander-in-chief told the network, “I think she should go to the real part of the border, not a part of the border that is seldom violated.”

“Look, the border is causing death at a level that nobody’s ever seen before, you know, you have people dying in the deserts and they have no water,” he continued, “They’re coming in by the thousands, and they’re coming in sick.”

“They’re spreading disease to our country,” he also said, calling it “just unbelievable how bad it is.”

Critics say Biden’s decision to reverse Trump administration border policies prompted a flood of Central American and Mexican migrants, including thousands of unaccompanied children.

Some Central Americans looking for refuge from the Northern Triangle countries — Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras — have taken these policy moves, as well as the overwhelmingly more welcoming tone from Democrats, as a sign that President Biden is inviting them to cross the border.

Insisting that the border was not facing a crisis, Mayorkas said in early March that the problems the agency faced should be blamed on the previous administration.

As the crisis heated up, Biden tapped his vice president to address the diplomatic measures related to its “root causes.” However, despite intense pressure, she had declined to commit to going to surveil the situation for herself.

Once the trip was announced, Republican and Democratic lawmakers were quick to excoriate Harris on both the timing and location choice.

El Paso — which is represented by Escobar, a strong supporter of the Biden administration — has fared significantly better than areas further downstream along the Rio Grande Valley that are represented by Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas).

Cuellar has spoken out against the Biden administration’s handling of the crisis and encouraged Harris to visit the region.

Escobar, meanwhile, has not.

News of Harris’ surprise trip came shortly after Trump announced that he would be traveling to the border next week, prompting skepticism of the timing.

Trump released a statement after it was announced saying his planned border trip with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and the Republican Study Committee was what finally pushed the VP to make the journey down south, to “see the tremendous destruction and death” caused by Biden’s policies.

“After months of ignoring the crisis at the Southern Border, it is great that we got Kamala Harris to finally go and see the tremendous destruction and death that they’ve created — a direct result of Biden ending my very tough but fair Border policies,” the 45th president began.

“Harris and Biden were given the strongest Border in American history. And now, it is by far the worst in American history.”

“If Governor Abbott and I weren’t going there next week, she would have never gone!”

Harris, who visited Guatemala and Mexico earlier this month as part of her first foreign visit in office, was dogged for her entire trip by questions about going to see the US-Mexico border in person.

Her answer to NBC News’ Lester Holt on the matter gained considerable negative attention.

“We’ve been to the border. So this whole thing about the border, we’ve been to the border,” Harris said, to which Holt replied, “You haven’t been to the border.”

“At some point, you know, we are going to the border,” a defensive Harris told Holt on “Today” in Guatemala — 1,308 miles away from the US-Mexico crossing.

Harris, seeming to laugh at her own joke, responded: “And I haven’t been to Europe. And I mean, I don’t understand the point that you’re making. I’m not discounting the importance of the border.”

Speaking to reporters about the trip Thursday, chief Harris spokeswoman Symone Sanders defended the timing and location choice, saying, “this administration does not take their cues from Republican criticism, nor from the former president of the United States of America.”

“The Vice President has said, over the course — over the last three months, that she would go to the border. She has been before. She would go again. She would go when it was appropriate when it made sense.”

As for the choice of El Paso, Sanders took a shot at Republicans by making reference to the Trump administration.

“I will note that El Paso being the birthplace — birthplace of the previous administration’s family separation policy is an important part of the story here and one that you can expect we will continue to tell tomorrow on the ground.”

Vice President Kamala Harris is set to visit El Paso on June 25, her chief spokesperson confirmed Wednesday in a statement.

There are still no exact details or agenda for the visit, but according to the statement, the goal is to “address the root causes of migration from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras.”

The vice president was just in Guatemala and Mexico earlier this month in her first trip overseas since taking office. The trip was met with a whirlwind of criticism from all sides of the political aisle. Conservatives, particularly U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz and John Cornyn of Texas, accused Harris of having her attention set on the wrong border, while progressives lambasted Harris after a video of her urging Guatemalan migrants to not come to the United States went viral — and questioned why Harris, a daughter of immigrants herself, would make such a remark.

The vice president will be accompanied by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, the statement confirmed. It’s her first visit to the border since becoming vice president.

Conservatives have been pushing Harris to visit the border for weeks as they raise alarm over what they have described as a crisis. Gov. Greg Abbott has blamed the Biden administration’s immigration policies for the increase of immigrants on the state’s southern border, saying in an earlier disaster declaration that new federal policies have paved the way for “dangerous gangs and cartels, human traffickers, and deadly drugs like fentanyl to pour into our communities.” He announced earlier this month that Texas will take steps to build its own border wall.

In a statement issued Wednesday, Abbott called Harris the “Border Czar,” and touted Operation Lone Star — an initiative to amp upstate law enforcement presence at the border.

Cornyn said in a statement Wednesday, before the trip was announced, that any reluctance to do so is “willful ignorance.”

“Despite what Kamala Harris said in Central America when she said, ‘Do not come,’ the people who are coming are talking to friends and relatives in the United States, they see what’s happening on TV, and the cartels are whispering in their ear,” Cornyn said.

Cruz accused the Biden-Harris administration of being “the last mile of a human trafficking and illegal drug network that cartels are exploiting.”

“It only took more than half a million illegal immigrants entering the United States, more than 400,000 pounds of drugs seized, 19 U.S. Senators traveling to the southern border and 92 days after being appointed border crisis czar for Kamala Harris to visit the southern border,” he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, President Joe Biden has disputed the idea of a crisis on the border, as NBC News reported, and has said that any ongoing problems at the border are to be blamed on the Trump administration for refusing to cooperate during the presidential transition period.

Harris is not the only major politician making news for planning a visit down to the border. Former President Donald Trump plans on touring Texas’ southern border with Abbott.

EL PASO, Texas (AP) — The man accused of carrying out last weekend’s deadly mass shooting at a Walmart in the Texas border city of El Paso confessed to officers while he was surrendering and later explained that he had been targeting Mexicans, authorities say.

Patrick Crusius, 21, emerged with his hands up from a vehicle that was stopped at an intersection shortly after last Saturday’s attack and told officers, “I’m the shooter,” Detective Adrian Garcia said in an arrest warrant affidavit.

Full Coverage: Shootings

Crusius later waived his Miranda rights and agreed to speak with detectives, telling them he entered the store with an AK-47 assault rifle and multiple magazines, and that he was targeting Mexicans.

Twenty-two people were killed and about two dozen were injured. Most of the dead had Hispanic last names and eight were Mexican nationals.

Authorities believe that shortly before the attack, Crusius posted a racist screed online that railed against an influx of Hispanics into the U.S. The document parrots some of President Donald Trump’s divisive rhetoric about immigration, but the writer said his views predate Trump’s rise and that any attempt to blame the president for his actions was “fake news.”

Many El Paso residents, protesters, and Democrats have blasted Trump over his incendiary words, blaming Trump for inflaming political and racial tensions throughout the country. Trump has denied stoking division and violence, contending this week that he “brings people together. Our country is doing incredibly well.”

Authorities say Crusius drove more than 10 hours from his hometown near Dallas to carry out the shooting in the largely Latino border city of El Paso. An attorney for the Crusius family, Chris Ayres, told The Associated Press that the rest of the family never heard Patrick Crusius use the kind of racist and anti-immigrant language that was posted in the online screed.

Crusius has been charged with capital murder and is being held without bond. Federal prosecutors have said they are also considering hate-crime charges.

The attack came hours before another mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio, in which nine people were killed. The dual shootings, which killed 31 people in all and wounded dozens more, reignited calls for Congress to take immediate action to reduce gun violence.

Trump said Friday that he believes he has the influence to rally Republicans around stronger federal background check laws. But at the same time, Trump said he had assured the National Rifle Association that its gun rights views would be “fully represented and respected.”

___

Bleiberg reported from Dallas and Weber reported from Austin.

Members of the far-left Antifa movement are planning to converge near the U.S.-Mexico border in September to protest conditions at migrant detention facilities.

And what they reportedly aim to do in El Paso, Texas, is concerning, to say the least.

“Antifa is leading a ‘Border Resistance’ militancy training tour that will converge on a 10-day siege in El Paso, TX,” Quillette editor Andy Ngo tweeted Monday. “The promotional image shows border enforcement officers being killed & government property fired bombed. Organizers asking for ‘white comrades’ to pay for others.”

Antifa is leading a “Border Resistance” militancy training tour that will converge on a 10-day siege in El Paso, TX. The promotional image shows border enforcement officers being killed & government property fired bombed. Organizers asking for “white comrades” to pay for others.

One of the promotional images does indeed show a Border Patrol vehicle being set on fire, as well as a Molotov cocktail flying through the air.

Several people are wielding bows and arrows, and at least one Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer is on the ground after being hit with arrows.

The subtext is all too clear, particularly from a movement that has been linked to violence many times in the past. Ngo himself was brutally assaulted by Antifa protesters last month in Portland, Oregon, and a self-proclaimed Antifa activist showed up to a detention center in Washington state earlier in July with a rifle and improvised explosive devices.

After that activist was killed by police, Antifa’s Seattle faction posted a call to action for others to follow in his footsteps, labeling its “comrade” a “martyr” and urging a call for “direct action.”

The Antifa event in El Paso, which will last Sept. 1-10, is officially called a “Border Resistance Convergence,” according to the event’s website.

“Local and national organizers are working together to build 10 days of training and direct actions for the Border Resistance Convergence in El Paso, TX — September 1-10th,” the site says.

“We are calling on affinity groups everywhere to come together and help us address the US-funded genocide and local concentration camps.”

Now, it’s not clear what those “training and direct actions” will entail. But considering Antifa’s history of violence, as well as the promotional image is seen in Ngo’s tweet, it can’t be anything good.

And true to form, Antifa is asking it’s white members to fund this event.

RELATED: Trump Has Brilliant Plan To Crash Dem Debates with Illegal Immigrant Health Care Ad

“There are two locations that can house around 20 people each for the time span of the convergence. There are also local organizers who will be opening their houses. These spaces will be used to host QTPOC folks that are traveling to El Paso,” the website says.

“We are very much relying on white comrades to donate money and throw down on renting temporary spaces for our more vulnerable friends as camping can affect us all in different ways.”

The above lines would be laughable if Antifa hadn’t proven time and again that it’s a dangerous and violent organization.

Remind me again why people like CNN’s Chris Cuomo are defending Antifa?

A caravan-sized group of more than 1,000 people was taken into federal custody in western Texas Wednesday after illegally crossing from Mexico into the United States, a senior Border Patrol official told the Washington Examiner.

Agents encountered 1,036 people, primarily from Central America, near El Paso, Texas, early Wednesday morning. The arrest marks the largest group of unauthorized immigrants that Border Patrol has ever taken into custody at once.

The group included 63 children traveling without a parent or guardian. Another 39 people were single adults, and the remaining 934 claimed to be traveling with a family member, according to a report. Guatemalan citizens made up just over half the detainees. The rest are primarily from other Central American countries, including Honduras and El Salvador.

It’s not clear if the group came from Northern Triangle countries as part of a caravan, though it’s not likely, given no news of a convoy traveling through Mexico. Border Patrol has said human smugglers often oversee the movement of migrants at the border and use the groups to distract federal law enforcement while they move narcotics or people hoping to avoid arrest over unmanned parts of the border. Smugglers charge migrants an average of $5,000 to $8,000 each to get to the United States.

Border Patrol said in late March its agents on the southern border had since October apprehended 100 groups that contained 100 or more people. In its 2017 fiscal year, CBP documented two groups of 100 people or more. That jumped to 13 groups in 2018.

Until Wednesday, the biggest group of people to arrive at once consisted of more than 430 individuals. That apprehension took place Monday in the same region of the southern border. Memorial Day marked the busiest day in history for Border Patrol’s El Paso region as 2,200 people were taken into custody.

President Trump told reporters at the White House earlier Thursday to expect a major statement about the border in the next day or two. Wednesday’s apprehension has not been publicly shared by Customs and Border Protection or its parent, the Department of Homeland Security.
