Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s socialist cronies who swept last week’s Democratic primaries boasted about an affordability message — but critics say it was anti-Israel furor that is fueling the party’s swing to the left.

State Democratic Party chairman Jay Jacobs admitted voters’ feelings on Israel helped propel Mamdani buddies to three House primary victories, including firebrand Darializa Avila Chevalier and former city Comptroller Brad Lander, who upset incumbent Reps. Adriano Espaillat and Dan Goldman, respectively.

Both Espaillat and Goldman backed the Jewish state — which may have motivated young activist liberals with pro-Palestinian views who have staunchly opposed Israeli military action in Gaza.

Reform UK breaks into ‘red wall’ strongholds as Labour suffers heavy local losses

The Labour Party has lost control of important councils in the UK local elections, with Nigel Farage’s right-wing Reform UK making sweeping gains and breaking into traditional Labour heartlands.

Voters in 136 local authorities went to the polls on May 7 to elect more than 5,000 councillors. By the early hours of May 8, with around a third of councils declared, Reform had gained more than 300 seats, while Labour had shed over 220 and the Conservatives more than 100. Seven councils had already slipped out of Labour control, with more results still to come.

Reacting to the results, Prime Minister Keir Starmer ruled out stepping down, telling supporters in west London he took “responsibility” for the defeats but would not abandon his five-year mandate.

Abbas loyalists sweep Palestinian elections, including some seats in Gaza

Loyalists of President Mahmoud Abbas won most races in Palestinian municipal elections, election officials said, in a vote that for the first time in nearly two decades included a city in the besieged Gaza Strip.

The elections had been held “at a highly sensitive moment amid complex challenges and exceptional circumstances”, Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa said as results were announced on Sunday.

Somalia holds first local elections in decades, amid tight security

More than 10,000 security personnel have been deployed in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu, ahead of Thursday’s local elections – the first direct polls in nearly 60 years.

Somalia launched voter registration in April for the first time in decades, as the country has been struggling to emerge from decades of conflict and chaos, battling a bloody Islamist insurgency and frequent natural disasters.

The local elections, postponed several times, are a step towards universal suffrage and an end to the complex clan-based indirect voting system that has been in place since 1969.

More than 1,600 candidates are running for 390 local seats in the southeastern Banadir region.

Zelensky says ready to hold Ukraine elections

President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday he was ready to hold new elections in Ukraine, and that he expected to send Washington within a day revised proposals on ending the nearly four-year war with Russia.

US President Donald Trump is pressuring Kyiv to accept a deal formulated by Washington, the initial version of which was criticised by Ukraine’s allies as overly favourable to Russia.

“We are working today (Tuesday) and will continue tomorrow (Wednesday). I think we will hand it over tomorrow,” Zelensky told reporters after shuttling between European capitals to hammer out a response with allies.

Dutch election goes to the wire as progressive forces led by newcomer Rob Jetten make gains in blow to rightwing firebrand Geert Wilders.

The Netherlands voted on Wednesday in a parliamentary resulting in a too close to call result with rightwing frontman Geert Wilders of the Party for Freedom (PPV) and rising progressive leader Rob Jetten of the D66, both getting 26 seats.

The difference between the two parties, as of Thursday morning, with more than 98% of the votes counted, is just a mere 2.000 votes. It could take several days before the final result is confirmed.

Dutch police use tear gas against anti-immigration protesters, 30 arrested

AMSTERDAM, Sept 20 (Reuters) – Dutch police used tear gas and a water cannon to disperse violent anti-migration protesters in The Hague on Saturday, local authorities said.

Thirty people have been arrested, and two police officers were injured. Authorities did not rule out additional arrests in the coming days as they review camera footage.

Thousands of people had joined a protest organised by a right-wing activist, demanding stricter migration policies and a clampdown on asylum seekers, just over a month before a national election.

Germany’s eastern state of Thuringia elected a new premier on Thursday, after months of delicate negotiations ensured the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) could be left out of government despite winning elections in September.

Mario Voigt from the conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) is set to govern in an unprecedented coalition with the centre-left Social Democrats (SDP) and the populist Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW).

In his first speech as premier in the capital Erfurt, Voigt hailed a “spirit of co-operation and a new political culture.”
