The anti-immigration party of Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella scored a dramatic victory in European elections on Sunday, prompting Mr Macron to dissolve parliament and call a first round of elections in 19 days’ time.

The decision has sent shockwaves through French politics, not least among the Republicans party, which won only 7.25% of the vote and has seen many of its voters move to National Rally (RN).

For Republicans leader Eric Ciotti the solution was clear: “We need to have an alliance while remaining ourselves… an alliance with the National Rally and its candidates.”

In a sign of EU Parliament’s rightward tilt, Marion Maréchal’s party has entered the Italian and Polish-led conservative group.

STRASBOURG — Europe’s hard right is coalescing.

On Wednesday, French far-right politician Marion Maréchal, the leader of a fringe party, announced that its sole member of the European Parliament, Nicolas Bay, will now sit with the Euroskeptic faction that features Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy and the Polish nationalist Law and Justice.

The movement of one MEP will make little immediate impact — but it’s a sign of what could be to come in June’s European election. The European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group — currently a rather small and sidelined power in the Parliament — is threatening to overtake French President Emmanuel Macron’s Renew Europe in size, according to recent polls, with Meloni’s MEPs expected to swell in number.

“By joining the ECR we give ourselves the means with this group to outstrip the Renew group of Emmanuel Macron, and thus to reduce the centrist influence in the European Parliament,” said Maréchal, the niece of Marine Le Pen, who leads a different far-right party, National Rally (which sits with the far-right Identity and Democracy — ID — group in the Parliament).

CNN) — German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said “there is work to be done” in Germany to face up to the dark forces that are finding mainstream support there and in other parts of the world.

“In Germany, obviously, they always have to be seen in a certain context, in the context of our past, which means we have to be that much more vigilant than others,” she said.

Speaking exclusively to CNN’s Christiane Amanpour a day after the European elections, where nationalists failed to live up to a forecasted surge in support, Merkel said we have to face-up “to the specters of the past.”
“We have to tell our young people what history has brought over us and others.”

Merkel: Trump ‘has his opinions, I have mine’ 01:02

In recent days, German Jews were warned by a leading government official not to wear kippahs in public, following a rise in anti-Semitic attacks. Addressing the rise in anti-Semitism, Merkel said that Germany has “always had a certain number of anti-Semites among us, unfortunately.”

“There is to this day not a single Synagogue not a single daycare center for Jewish children, not a single school for Jewish children that does not need to be guarded by German policemen,” she added.

Merkel, who has been Chancellor for more than 13 years and outlasted many global leaders, has shouldered much of the blame for Europe’s populist wave, with some pinning the spike in support for the far-right, anti-Islam Alternative for Germany (AfD) on her handling of the European refugee crisis.

The Chancellor again defended her decision to allow nearly 1 million refugees into Germany, saying that the best way to manage immigration in the wake of humanitarian crises, like those in Syria and Iraq, was not to “shut ourselves off from each other,” but to be more “vigilant” in making sure that refugees fleeing these countries are “sufficiently cared for.”

That the forecasted far-right surge in last week’s European elections didn’t happen was largely attributed to increased support for pro-European Union green and liberal parties and an increased turnout across the bloc.

In Germany, the green party finished second to Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union.

The Chancellor said that she was “pleased that more people went to the elections than in the last European elections,” but conceded that the Greens’ performance “has to do with issues that people are interested in the most these days, for example climate change, and that is also for my party, of course, a challenge now.”

Merkel has been criticized for her reliance on burning coal and bowing to pressure from German industry — catering to their needs rather than the needs of the environment. This might seem strange, given that Merkel has previously been dubbed the “climate Chancellor” due to her public support for green and clean energy initiatives. Indeed, she was one of the most vocal critics of US President Donald Trump’s decision to pull out of the Paris climate accord.

Of her relationship with Trump, Merkel responded to a question about the public perception of her being a punching bag for the US President, by acknowledging that they have “had contentious debates” but that they’ve managed to find “common ground” where it was needed.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel deliberates with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 summit on June 9, 2018 in Charlevoix, Canada.

She said that all German Chancellors had an “obligation” to forge a relationship with the US President.

“One of the most important decisions that (the) United States took after the second world war, to give Germany and Europe a chance to actually develop themselves, well … That was achieved by the Marshall Plan. America has always defended us,” Merkel said.

It’s widely assumed that Merkel had a better relationship with Trump’s predecessor, Barack Obama. But Merkel revealed to CNN that her relationship with the former President “did not start very smoothly” and that “it was not that easy in the beginning.”

She recalled the speech he almost gave at the Brandenburg Gate, saying, “I had been criticized a lot when he wanted to speak in Berlin in front of the Brandenburg Gate, but I said he’s not the President yet. And only presidents can speak there.” Obama ended up speaking instead at the Victory Column.

Speaking of another ex-US leader, Merkel responded to the viral image of President George W. Bush giving her what appeared to be an uninvited neck rub at a 2006 meeting in Russia. The Chancellor brushed off the much-commented-on interaction as a “kind gesture at the time, a friendship” from the then-President.

Who is Angela Merkel? 02:15

Merkel is nearly halfway through her fourth and final term as Chancellor. Reflecting on nearly 15 years as leader of one of the world’s most powerful nations, the most powerful politician in Europe and, arguably, the most powerful woman in the world, she spoke of the responsibility she felt to women and girls that looked up to her.

Asked if she sees herself as a feminist, the Chancellor said that, having been asked this question before, the Dutch Queen Maxima helped her find her own definition of feminism.

She said the Queen explained to her that feminism meant “women having the same rights everywhere and this is parity… from politics to the media, to the business community, that must be our objective, we are not there yet.”

“For many girls, apparently, I have become indeed a role model, during my time of chancellorship,” she added. “We need more women in these relevant positions and that means men have to change their way of life.”

“For many girls, apparently, I have become indeed a role model, during my time of chancellorship … we need more women in these relevant positions and that means men have to change their way of life.”
With Merkel’s final term as Chancellor ending in 2021, backers of her brand of politics fear it’s on the way out as populism from both the left and right erodes the political center.

Merkel strongly rejected ceding any ground to populist forces, instead saying there was a need to show “why we are for democracy, why we try to bring about solutions, why we always have to put ourselves into the other person’s shoes, why we stand-up against intolerance, why we show no tolerance towards violations of human rights.”

In the immediate aftermath of the European elections, in which the center-right European People’s Party had its dominance eroded, exactly how popular Merkel’s signature pragmatism is remains far from clear. Especially as her Christian Democratic centrism is currently at the heart of the EPP’s vision for Europe’s future.

As Merkel prepares to leave office, she might find that those who replace her sweep away her legacy not only in Germany, but across the continent she has for so long dominated.

This story has been updated to clarify where Barack Obama gave his 2008 speech in Berlin.

CNN’s Ana Bickford, Mick Krever, Claire Calzonetti, Ben Kirby, Claudia Otto, Darren Bull, Christian Streib, Neil Bennett, and Stewart Scanlon contributed to this report.

ANGELA Merkel yesterday denied that she is in the hunt for a top European Union job after her term as German chancellor ends.

Ms Merkel fuelled speculation that she is vying to replace Jean-Claude Juncker or Donald Tusk after claiming a “renewed sense of responsibility” for Europe. The German Chancellor has been forced to deny that she will be moving to Brussels to take either the European Commission or Council presidency after she steps down from her role in 2021. On Thursday, she told a press conference in Berlin that she would not take a senior post inside the EU after her fourth and final term as German chancellor ends.

She said: “I am not available for any further political office, no matter where it is, not even in Europe.”

Initially, Ms Merkel ruled out a move to the EU in October after she announced her decision to step down as chancellor after 14 years in the job.

But she reignited speculation after telling German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung that she has a “responsibility” for Europe’s future.

She said: “Many people are worried about Europe, including myself.

“This gives me an even greater sense of responsibility to take care of the fate of this Europe of ours together with others.”

“I, as German chancellor, should intestacy rather than not intensify my efforts towards a good, functioning Europe,” Ms Merkel added.

Mark Rutte, who was holding a joint press conference with the German leader, showed support for Ms Merkel’s decision to steer clear of Brussels.

EU leaders are expected to begin the process of selecting Mr Juncker’s successor as Commission president after the European elections next week.

Former Labour MP Gisela Stuart has predicted that the Europeans will back down over their Brexit deal stalemate before Britain leaves next March.

The prominent Brexit campaigner told the BBC’s Andrew Marr that Europe was looking at today’s elections in Sweden with huge concern.

She explained that the EU will want to push through a deal with Britain in this European Parliament, since the next parliamentary session will be more eurosceptic.

Ms Stuart said that Brussels is scared that the next group of MEPs could scupper Michel Barnier’s approach and reward Britain if the negotiations are extended.

The former Vote Leave activist said: “In Sweden, they are going to the polls today. It looks as if the hard right will do very well.

“You need to see this in the wider context across Europe, it is not just Sweden.

“In Germany, there is AfD, they are now the major opposition party. Look at what is happening in Italy, in Hungary.

“Politicians don’t realise that their behaviour is at the root of this.

“This does not bode well for the European Parliament elections in May, so the pressure to come up with a deal before March is very useful for us because the next Parliament will be by far more eurosceptic than the current one.”

The polls have opened in Sweden today for the general election, which is expected to see a shock surge in the vote for a formerly fringe eurosceptic party.

The anti-immigration Sweden Democrats (SD) has seen poll support of 20 percent and is tipped for a second place finish.

Neither the governing Social Democrats nor the main centre-right party is likely to win a majority.

The EU elite are understood to be terrified that a traditionally liberal state could succumb to the populist eurosceptism that has been sweeping across Europe.

EUROSCEPTICS fear a secret plot to derail Brexit is being hatched after it emerged that Whitehall officials have set aside almost £1million to pay for European Parliamentary elections next year – after the UK is due to have quit the EU.
John Bercow is known to be a staunch Remainer

And the news prompted one Tory MP to claim it as evidence of the “contempt” for Breat he claimed existed on the board of the European Commission.

The electoral watchdog, which has responsibility for regulating party and election finance and setting standards for well-run elections, set alarm bells ringing with the news that it has been handed an £829,000 budget by the Speaker’s Committee on the Electoral Commission to cover “activities relating to a European Parliamentary election in 2019”.

The next such elections are due to be held between May 23 and May 26 – almost two months after the UK leaves the bloc on March 29.

The Electoral Commission insists the cash had been set aside “as a precautionary measure, so that we have the necessary funds to deliver our functions at a European Parliamentary election, in the unlikely event that they go ahead”.

None of the money has yet been spent, the commission has pointed out.

However, given that the committee is chaired by speaker of the House of Commons – and arch-Remainer –John Bercow, the move has triggered claims of a move to stall the process by which Britain leaves the bloc, or even prevent it completely.

The UK currently has 73 MEPs, all are scheduled to end their terms on March 29.

Theresa May is already under pressure to get the required legislation through Parliament in time to get the royal assent it needs so that an order can be made to cancel next year’s European elections.

“Are they ignoring what Theresa May has said and deliberately still believing that we won’t have left the EU?

“It’s complete madness to earmark money to spend on an election the Prime Minister has already said we will not fight unless you are already working to make sure the UK stays in the EU, in which case you are working against the British people.”

Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg added: “It is important that the Withdrawal Bill is passed soon because this will provide the necessary clarity that the European elections are not taking place.”

Andrew Bridgen, Tory MP for North-West Leicestershire, said: “Members serving on the road of the Electoral Commission have made no secret of their contempt for Brexit.

“Are we to believe it’s an accident that it has budgeted for next year’s European parliament election with the support of the Speaker, John Bercow, who is a staunch remainer?

“Unfortunately Bercow has been given the opportunity to waste a huge amount of taxpayers’ money by the government’s delay in dealing with the House of Lords wrecking amendments and send the prime minister off to the June European Council summit with a strong mandate from Parliament.”

This latest development follows a Sunday Telegraph investigation last month which found that four of the body’s ten commissioners had made statements about Brexit since the referendum, all of them in support of staying in the EU.
