Europe Destroyed Its Auto Industry—China Did Not

Chinese electric vehicle sales in Europe reached a record high during the first five months of 2026. Chinese brands sold 171,800 battery-electric vehicles across the 18 largest Western European markets, raising their market share from 9.4% to 14.2% in one year. One out of every seven EVs sold in Western Europe now carries a Chinese brand, despite additional EU duties of up to 35.3% on top of the standard 10% automobile tariff.

Brussels claims China is “dumping” state-subsidized vehicles, and there is no question that Beijing supported its EV industry. Yet Europe subsidizes battery factories, charging stations, renewable energy, manufacturers, and the consumers purchasing these cars. Italy’s incentives temporarily reduced the Chinese Leapmotor T03 to as little as €5,000. The difference is that China used industrial policy to build an efficient supply chain, while Europe spent public money creating regulations, mandates, compliance departments, and carbon-accounting schemes.

Even earlier this morning, EU lawmakers and diplomats agreed to implement the controversial trade agreement concluded last summer with the US, after hours of late-night talks in Strasbourg.

Our trade reporter Peggy Corlin writes that despite the breakthrough, which is set to soothe soaring transatlantic tensions, the deal remains fragile as long as US President Donald Trump continues to use tariffs as a tool of political pressure.

The negotiations concluded two weeks after US President Donald Trump threatened to impose 25% tariffs on EU cars if Europeans did not implement the agreement by 4 July. The deal is also considered heavily tilted towards the US, slashing tariffs on US industrial exports to 0% while keeping a baseline tariff on most EU exports at 15%.

EU launches procedure to unblock €90bn Ukraine loan and new Russia sanctions

Hungary’s contentious veto on the €90 billion loan for Ukraine is fast approaching its end after the restoration of the Druzhba oil pipeline.

The European Union has formally launched the internal process to unblock the €90 billion loan for Ukraine and the 20th package of sanctions against Russia, bringing the standoff between Budapest and Kyiv closer to an end after months of intrigue.

The so-called written procedure began on Wednesday afternoon during a meeting of ambassadors in Brussels. Member states have up to 24 hours to register any objection.

Cyprus, the country holding the EU Council’s rotating presidency, expects the procedure to be concluded on Thursday afternoon, when a final decision could be announced.

Germany’s plans for a €10 billion military satellite network, independent of the European IRIS² project, are worrying some EU lawmakers about fragmentation and duplication of costs.

Germany plans 100 satellites in low-orbit orbit for military use only, while IRIS² aims for 290 satellites by 2029 for a unified space communications system.

Analysts say Germany’s technology resembles Elon Musk’s Starshield platform, used in Ukraine.

Iranian resistance backs EU plan to label Revolutionary Guards ‘terrorists’

The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) has backed the European Union’s move to put the Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) on the “terrorist list” after a deadly crackdown on mass protests.

Speaking ahead of a meeting of EU ministers in Brussels, the bloc’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said: “If you act as a terrorist, you should also be treated as a terrorist.”

Shahin Gobadi, a member of the NCRI’s foreign affairs committee, told Brussels Signal that the decision was long overdue. “We have been pushing for this for a long time. In our view, the decision is at least three decades late,” he said.

BERLIN, Jan 28 (Reuters) – Ministers from six leading European economies including Germany and France vowed to be the drivers of European progress as they tackled how to advance projects stalled by the EU’s complex decision-making process at a time of geopolitical upheaval.

The video conference including finance and economy ministers from Poland, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands followed ridicule from U.S. President Donald Trump‘s administration over the time it takes the 27-country European Union to make decisions.

“As six major economies in Europe, we now want to be the drivers,” German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil said after the call. “We are providing momentum; others can join. What matters is strengthening our competitiveness and our defence capability.”
