Manitoba has declared a provincewide state of emergency as wildfires continue to threaten communities across the province.

An emergency alert issued at around 5:25 p.m. CT Wednesday said the measure was due to rapidly spreading wildfires and extreme fire conditions in northern and eastern Manitoba.

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew said the “significant step” will involve the evacuation of about 17,000 people as fires continued to intensify throughout Wednesday.

“This is the largest evacuation Manitoba will have seen in most people’s living memory,” Kinew said during a Wednesday evening news conference.

A mass of boulders, earth and splintered trees can be seen in new drone footage released Tuesday of the devastation from a landslide that wiped out a village in a remote part of Papua New Guinea.

People can be seen pacing back and forth searching for their loved ones in the shadow of the limestone mountainside, part of which sheared away Friday, devastating the village of Yambali in the South Pacific nation’s remote highlands.

As they used shovels, sticks and their bare hands in the footage released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the hope of finding their loved ones alive in the tons of rubble becomes increasingly unlikely.

Jan. 5 (UPI) — Hundreds of residents in Western Australia were forced to flee from their homes Tuesday as a series of out-of-control wildfires ripped through the state amid scorching temperatures.

Gusty winds combined with temperatures of almost 100 degrees in some parts of the state hampered firefighters as they contended with uncontained fires, including one near Lancelin, about 75 miles north of Perth.

Nearly 300 residents were evacuated from their homes in the area as hundreds of firefighters worked to bring the “Red Gully” blaze under control after burning nearly 18,000 acres.

Officials said unexploded ordnance from the former Lancelin bombing range is preventing firefighters from entering the community of Wedge Island, leaving it at high risk as the fire approached at 2 mph.

The out-of-control fire jumped containment lines late Monday and was advancing toward the towns of Gingin and Dandaragan, officials said.

Meanwhile, two wildfires also were burning near Geraldton, a coastal town of 37,000 about 250 miles north of Perth.

An emergency message was issued to residents there late Tuesday afternoon, warning them that it was too late to leave their homes.

“You are in danger and need to act immediately to survive,” the warning said. “There is a threat to lives and homes. Homes in this area are under threat by fire now.”

Several fires were also ongoing in the outskirts of Perth itself, according to emergency officials.

Oct. 17 (UPI) — Two Colorado wildfires — one of which is the largest in the state’s history — grew by thousands of acres Friday amid high winds and low relative humidity.

On Saturday morning Grand County Sheriff Brett Schroetlin issued an evacuation notice for residents of the area near Colorado Highway 125 due to the East Troublesome fire near the state’s northern border.

That fire grew by more than 6,000 acres and as of Saturday was burning 11,329 acres or 18 square miles.

Firefighters have not contained the blaze, which has also prompted the closure of a section of Highway 125 and the opening of an evacuation center.

The Cameron Peak fire near Fort Collins grew 20,000 acres Friday for a total of 187,537 acres or 293 square miles burning as of Saturday morning.

Authorities have issued a new round of evacuation orders for those living in the foothills immediately west of Fort Collins and south of the Big Thompson Canyon.

The fire, which ignited Aug. 13, is 57% contained and is considered the largest fire in Colorado’s history.

A cold front is expected to move over the Front Range Saturday evening, reducing winds and reducing temperatures, but until then gusts as high as 50 miles per hour are expected with winds of up to 70 miles per hour about 9,000 feet.

Air quality in the Fort Collins area is expected to be unhealthy for sensitive groups until Sunday.
