Protesting French farmers entered ⁠the centre of Paris and reached the Eiffel Tower ‍on Thursday amid anger over a free-trade agreement between the EU and the Mercosur South American ‍bloc.

French farmers blockaded sites in Paris on Thursday in protest against a sweeping trade deal the European Union is poised to sign with South American nations and other local grievances.

The farmers overran police checkpoints to enter the city, driving along the Champs-Élysées avenue and blocking the road around the Arc de Triomphemonument before dawn, before gathering in front of the National Assembly, France’s lower house of parliament.

National Assembly President Yael Braun-Pivet was booed and jostled when she stepped outside of the assembly’s gates to talk with protesters.

EU approves landmark bill to restore 20% of the bloc’s land and seas by 2030

EU lawmakers on Tuesday gave the final green light to a milestone bill aimed at protecting nature in the bloc, overriding conservative attempts to torpedo a law that has angered European farmers.

The rules are a central part of the EU’s ambitious environmental goals under the Green Deal – a set of laws aimed at helping the bloc meet its climate goals – but farmers say they threaten their livelihoods.

The legislation demands the European Union‘s 27 member states put in place measures to restore at least 20 percent of the bloc’s land and seas by 2030.

Farmers have a long list of grievances and have taken to the streets across Europe, clogging roads including in Brussels where EU institutions are based.

Protests continued on Tuesday in Spain, where farmers in the northeastern Catalonia region gathered near the French border. Meanwhile, thousands of Polish farmers demonstrated against the Green Deal and other gripes in Warsaw.

They lament what they say are excessively restrictive environmental rules, competition from cheap imports from outside the European Union and low incomes.

Spanish fruit farmers arrested for using illegal wells during long-term drought

Farmers are turning to desperate measures in drought-hit Spain, which just had its warmest April on record.

Twenty six people have been arrested for tapping illegal wells to grow tropical fruit in southern Spain, police said on Tuesday.

During a four-year investigation, authorities uncovered more than 250 illegal wells, bore holes and ponds in the Axarquia area of Andalusia. The region has been hit by drought since 2021.

Spain is Europe’s biggest producer of tropical fruit, which requires large volumes of water. Producers estimate that avocado production will drop by 25 per cent this year due to high temperatures and a lack of water.

Why are Spanish fruit-growers being arrested?

The suspects are being investigated for misappropriation of public waters and alleged fraudulent use of water for irrigation of subtropical crops such as avocados and mangos, police said.
