The Commission last year unveiled plans to stop the sale of vehicles using internal combustion engines as part of an ambitious climate target to cut emissions by more than half over this decade and 90 percent by 2035.

The measure passed by 339 votes to 249 with 24 abstentions at a session in Strasbourg, France – in practice limiting future sales to emissions-free all-electric models.

Cars currently account for 12 percent of all CO2 emissions in the 27-member EU bloc, while transportation overall accounts for around a quarter.

The conservative European People’s Party (EPP), the parliament’s biggest group of lawmakers, had sought to push a compromise that would have diluted the proposals and allowed sales of hybrid vehicles to continue.

Their amendment was narrowly defeated while an ambitious attempt by the Greens to bring the measure deadline forward to 2030 also failed.

Conservatives were also unable to push through amendments on having a car’s production-related carbon footprint taken into consideration as well – potentially allowing carmakers credits for synthetic, so-called e-fuels, made with captured carbon dioxide and hydrogen produced from renewable sources.

After the vote, EU environmental committee chair Pascal Canfin triumphantly tweeted: “100 percent zero emission cars in 2035! I strongly welcome the vote on CO2 standards in the @Europarl_EN. This position of the European Parliament is an important victory and consistent with our objective of climate neutrality.”

German Green EU legislator Michael Bloss also hailed the vote as a move that would simultaneously protect the climate and jobs in the sector.

French EPP lawmaker Agnes Evren was less impressed, however, with a decision she said would “condemn industrial activity and strongly penalize consumers.”

She said the legislation would prevent the commercialization of high-performance hybrid vehicles or vehicles using biofuels, whose production she said could potentially prove less expensive and less polluting than electric vehicles.

Americans need to keep a close eye on their wallets, however, as House progressives aren’t about to back down from pushing their big-government agenda that would increase taxes and energy prices on American families and businesses. Despite worrying economic conditions in the United States, like historic price hikes, Democrats have doubled down on their anti-fossil fuel agenda that will raise gas prices, drive jobs overseas and make our nation dependent on foreign energy again.

The Green New Deal would cripple our economy and disproportionately hurt lower-income families in several ways. First, the package includes a program called the Clean Energy Performance Program that will effectively eliminate fossil fuels. This is breathtakingly naïve and dangerous. Renewable sources of energy show great promise, but around 80% of U.S. energy comes from coal, natural gas and petroleum. With less than 5% being wind and solar, these renewables are simply not ready to take the place of fossil fuels to keep our lights on.

It also takes aim at cleaner-burning natural gas by preventing natural gas from being counted as “clean energy.” This stance is anti-science and anti-growth. Nothing has done more to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the past 20 years than expanding the use and availability of natural gas using technologies such as fracking, a process that has made it far easier to access cleaner-burning natural gas. Yet, by canceling the Keystone Pipeline and pushing the Green New Deal, the Biden administration and congressional Democrats have made energy more expensive for families and businesses.

The Clean Energy Performance Program would also increase our reliance on critical minerals imported from often-hostile regimes. These minerals are essential for batteries for electric vehicles and other sources of renewable energy. Our chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan put the Taliban in control of vast reserves of these resources, and China is already working to take advantage of Biden’s miscues.

Second, the package would increase energy costs on American families and businesses through other new provisions such as a methane tax. This provision unfairly targets small independent or marginal oil and gas producers and would make our environment less clean by undermining innovation in this sector and increasing global reliance on less clean forms of energy.

Not all oil and gas basins are similar in their hydrocarbon makeup. For example, Kansas is generally a “dead oil state” – meaning that gas levels found in Kansas crude are very low, along with the potential for meaningful methane release. This measurement is referred to as the Gas to Oil ratio (GOR).

Biden’s methane tax would unfairly punish Kansas independent oil producers with lower-than-average GORs who are by and large family-owned small businesses with fewer than ten employees. Targeting these wells would raise energy prices even further across the U.S. While many are small family-owned operations, they produce almost 7.5% of entire U.S. oil production. I’ve introduced the Marginal Well Protection Act to protect these critical small producers from being unfairly targeted by the administration.

Biden’s Green New Deal provisions would also spend $2.25 billion to create a taxpayer-funded “climate army,” or Civilian Climate Corps. This program would be controlled by the Biden administration and would likely be used to finance left-wing environmental activists. Thankfully, there is still bipartisan opposition to the program – most notably from Sen. Joe Machin (D-WV).

The reality is we already have a civilian climate corps. They’re called America’s farmers and ranchers. The farmers and ranchers I know in Kansas are the best environmentalists in the world. They should be honored and respected, not harassed by woke coastal environmental activists who often have zero world experience when it comes to environmental stewardship.

These policies and others, like the recently floated Carbon Tax, will break President Biden’s promise not to raise taxes on families earning less than $400,000. According to a new analysis by the Joint Committee on Taxation, Congress’ non-partisan tax scorekeeper, more than 85% of all taxpayers will face a tax increase or enjoy no benefit under this plan.

If progressives decide they are serious about protecting the environment rather than using climate alarmism to push their socialist agenda, they should join conservatives who embrace economic freedom. Studies show that freer economies are twice as clean as less free economies. Countries that have smaller governments, lower taxes, less regulation and strong protections for private property owners are more prosperous and cleaner than countries like Venezuela that suffer under socialist policies.

It’s time for the interests of American families and main street businesses to be put ahead of the demands of left-wing radical environmental activists who won’t be happy until they’ve destroyed the entire economy.

The first thing we should acknowledge in this catastrophic week is the death of Rush Limbaugh.  He is responsible for millions in this country having their heads screwed on straight, in addition to being the funniest, friendliest radio host in the history of the world.  My mom never missed his program, and I’ll not forget my dad rising from his chair to give Rush a private standing ovation after a particularly brilliant segment.  Word is that the attackers started mocking him and his death immediately.  And we’re the bad guys!

Texas made a down payment on its actions toward “going green” this week.  There had to have been untold suffering as temperatures hovered at zero Fahrenheit.  It would have been a joyous time for everyone, but the power was out.  The cable was out.  The Internet was out, and there was no heat other than huddling under blankets.  People were down to body heat, and millions had no way to prepare food.  We’re undoubtedly going to be hearing lots of stories of bare survival, assuming the masters of tech don’t ban them.   The whole episode flies in the face of the propaganda they demand we repeat.

It’s not like this never happened before.  Something similar happened way back in 1983, but it wasn‘t nearly as memorable.  Maybe that’s because we didn’t endure four, going on five days without traditional sources of heat, or any other vestige of civilized life.

Maybe the “renewable energy, save the planet people” overlooked a thing or two. Presumably they never thought of what would happen if their beloved windmills froze up, crippling the grid, to hear the news explain it.  It’s all so logical.  Turns out the water treatment plants need power too, and so do people’s aerobic systems.  Hmmm.  Try not to think about it.

Boil water before drinking, the water treatment systems are not exactly up to speed, and drinking contaminated water could be very serious, say all the news breaks over battery radio.  Where are we?  Is it Venezuela yet?  Well not yet, but the green brigade is just getting geared up.  And do they have big plans for us!  The UN just released a report describing all the things we “must” do to avoid a global warming catastrophe.  You mean this isn’t one?  These geniuses lack good sense!

It seems every time there is a big “green” push to manage “global warming,” some ice-age phenomenon comes along.  Some years ago they had a big global warming conference in Germany with all the attendant scientific experts.  They nearly froze to death.  Attendees had to walk to the conference center, and then stand in line.  It was perfect.

Then there was the case of the scientific research ship that headed from Australia to someplace they shouldn’t have been.  They were going to collect data that demonstrated the ongoing blight of global warming.  Their ship was encased in ice, they had to be rescued by helicopter.  

So this week we had another big event, just hours before the power grid failed spectacularly. I’d never have seen this, except for the golf tournament on CBS.  They kept promoting that night’s episode of 60 Minutes when Anderson Cooper would interview Bill Gates.  No need to watch the segment, unless you just want to wallow in the flow of intellectual vanity.  Yours truly would dive across furniture to get them out of my house.  Don’t quote me, but Gates says something along the lines of, “Everybody has to stop what they’re doing and develop a strategy for achieving carbon net-zero by 2023,” or some such.  A few hours later, the power went out.  The temperature plunged to extremes that undoubtedly caused untold suffering, given the lack of heat.  They’ve already said 40 some died of carbon monoxide poisoning, trying to keep warm and resorting to desperate measures.

Representative Earl Blumenauer of Oregon, along with Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, introduced legislation on Thursday that would require Biden make such a declaration. The bill compares the action needed on the climate crisis to the wartime mobilization during World War II and urges Biden to declare an emergency under the National Emergencies Act, thus unlocking more than 100 additional presidential powers to tackle the crisis. “It’s past time that a climate emergency is declared,” Blumenauer said in a statement. “This bill can finally get it done.”

The proposed legislation follows a statement last week by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York, who urged Biden to declare an emergency to bypass Republican heel-dragging in Congress. “If there ever was an emergency, climate change is one,” Schumer said.

The U.S. wouldn’t be the first country to call climate change a crisis. To date, 38 countries around the world — including Japan, New Zealand, and the European Union — have declared similar “climate emergencies.” But most of those declarations have been symbolic resolutions, and so haven’t come with any additional tools to address the overheating planet.

In the U.S., however, the National Emergencies Act could give Biden real powers: The president could use the declaration to reinstitute a ban on crude oil exports, send emergency aid packages to states, or even redirect billions of dollars of funding away from defense projects and toward the production of renewable energy. President Trump tried to use the act in 2019 to funnel money from the Pentagon to his project to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, but was rebuffed by the courts and Congress.

These would be big, sweeping actions, but they also might upset Republican members of Congress, who are already criticizing Biden’s spree of executive orders as presidential overreach and whose support Biden might need to tackle some of his other legislative goals. Some have also argued that, even when done with the best of intentions, declaring a national emergency serves as an end-run around the democratic process.

The bill looks like a long shot at the moment, given both the narrow Democratic majority in the Senate and the fact that its only purpose is to encourage Biden to use his presidential powers. Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez introduced a similar resolution in 2019 that won support from many senators and representatives but never came up to a vote in the Democratic-controlled House. Still, the new bill may serve as a potent symbol — a sign that there is growing pressure on Biden to act swiftly on climate change, whether Republicans like it or not.

(Bloomberg) — President-elect Joe Biden is moving ahead with plans to address the coronavirus pandemic and shape his incoming administration, steps aimed at strengthening his claim on the White House even as President Donald Trump continues to dispute the results of last week’s election.

Biden is largely ignoring Trump’s efforts to undermine his victory. The president-elect plans to unveil on Monday his transition team’s coronavirus task force, a step toward fulfilling his central campaign promise: He will make containing the pandemic his first priority.

He is in other ways methodically moving on with the work expected of a newly elected president, launching his transition, moving toward appointments to White House staff jobs, and giving a traditional victory speech on Saturday night. He seemed to acknowledge the sharp partisan divide in pledging to work for those who didn’t vote for him, and saying he expected a good working relationship with Republicans in Congress.

Biden has so far won 290 Electoral College votes, according to the Associated Press, 20 more than required to clinch the nomination.

None of that has stopped Trump, who continued to question the results, fire off unfounded allegations of widespread voting irregularities, and alternate between claiming victory and saying he’d been robbed of a win.

Trump’s reaction has frozen Republican officeholders — few have so far acknowledged the win, though they aren’t fully embracing Trump’s position. White House staff have faced a leadership vacuum, fueled by another apparent coronavirus outbreak with Trump’s chief of staff, Mark Meadows, among those now battling the virus.

Tellingly, the administrator of the General Services Administration, a Trump appointee, has so far not formally acknowledged that Biden won the election, as required under the 57-year-old Presidential Transition Act. Certification by the GSA administrator allows transition teams to fan across the federal government, access expanded office space, start tapping into $6 million of funding and study detailed agency briefing books.

Former President George W. Bush, who is not a Trump supporter and has only spoken in particularly fraught moments over the last four years, sent a clear signal to the Republican Party to back away from the brink of outright denialism as Trump toys with a legal fight that could spur a transition crisis.

Bush issued a statement saying he had called Biden, whom he referred to as the president-elect, congratulated him and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on their victory, and offered his support during the transition. Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice posted a similar message on social media.

Biden gave every indication to the American people and U.S. allies that he plans for a peaceful and smooth transfer of power. He said his mandate is to curb the pandemic, rebuild the economy, fight climate change, root out systemic racism and expand access to health care — and attempt to restore a bipartisan spirit in bitterly divided Washington.

Control Covid

Biden won or is leading in states that could eventually award him 306 electoral college votes, far beyond the victory threshold of 270. Georgia appeared headed for a recount, but the trickle of votes in his favor has steadily solidified Biden’s position in the core swing states.

In his speech Saturday, he took steps to highlight the biggest difference between him and Trump by focusing almost singularly on the pandemic in his first hours as president-elect.

“Our work begins with getting Covid under control,” Biden said in his victory speech on Saturday, before calling on Congress to work together. “If we can decide not to cooperate, then we can decide to cooperate, and I believe that this is part of the mandate given to us from the American people.”

Yet Trump dug in and expected Republicans to continue to fall in line. There was no evidence, except from a few like Utah Senator Mitt Romney, that their loyalty had waned despite Trump’s electoral defeat. The GOP is poised to retain its Senate majority, pending a pair of run-off elections in Georgia, and could balk at any Biden initiatives, including his push for Congress to consider a new coronavirus relief package even before he is sworn in on Jan. 20.

Democratic Senator Chris Coons of Delaware, a Biden ally, called on Trump to back talks for a new coronavirus relief package during the months before Biden is sworn in. “One way that President Trump can show some graciousness in the next 73 days during the transition is to publicly support a significant pandemic relief bill,” Coons told ABC on Sunday.

On the Sunday political talk shows, Republicans called for patience and investigations, though some acknowledged those efforts are unlikely to swing the result. Whether Trump’s camp will follow through with its threats to sue in places like Pennsylvania and Georgia and to demand a recount in Wisconsin — is unclear. Results in those states were narrow, but Trump didn’t appear to have enough of the outstanding votes to change the results.

The Trump campaign is raising money for a legal fight but also saying it could steer the funds toward retiring campaign debt. As of Sunday, there was a growing sense among Trump’s allies that he’d lost, but would still pursue certain legal challenges.

In his statement, Bush alluded to Trump’s right to request recounts and pursue legal challenges, but added, “The American people can have confidence that this election was fundamentally fair, its integrity will be upheld and its outcome is clear.”

Golfing Weekend

Trump golfed Saturday and Sunday as his campaign continued to hold out hope for court victories that could turn the result. After rolling out a series of news conferences and court cases late last week, the campaign was all but silent Sunday — declining to say what suits it might file. It tried to rally troops by plastering the campaign office with a fake newspaper image crowning Al Gore as president; the image was fabricated.

“You have the president sitting in the White House not acknowledging it, and I think there’s lots of Republicans who are trying to feel their way around that,” former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, a Trump adviser, told ABC’s “This Week.”

Symone Sanders, a senior adviser to Biden’s campaign, said the transition team will focus on preparing plans to move quickly on issues such as police reform and addressing climate change. Biden is also expected to quickly name his White House team, but cabinet positions are still weeks away.

“Joe Biden is going to make good on his promises on the campaign trail,” Sanders told CNN on Sunday. “We have a little over 70 days, so I hope folks give us a moment to pull it together.” Biden has pledged a range of first-day actions once inaugurated, including rejoining the Paris climate accord, reversing Trump’s regulatory cuts, and ending his travel ban on predominantly Muslim countries.

The White House had not yet reached out to Biden, Sanders said. “I think the White House has made clear what their strategy is here and that they are going to continue to participate and push forward these flailing and, in many respects, baseless legal strategies,” she said.

Biden’s coronavirus task force will be co-chaired by former Surgeon General Vivek Murthy and former Food and Drug Administration Commissioner David Kessler, Biden deputy campaign manager Kate Bedingfield said. Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith, a professor of public health at Yale University, is another co-chair, according to a person familiar with Biden’s plans.

Georgia Run-Offs

Coons said Biden would reach out to Republicans in Congress. “The only way we’re going to pass a big or bold package — either in the transition period or in the coming year — is with bipartisan support,” Coons said.

Much of Biden’s agenda will hinge on a pair of run-off Senate elections in Georgia, a state Biden was leading by 10,000 votes on Sunday but where Republican incumbents outpaced their Senate challengers. Democrats would likely need both seats to reach a tie in the Senate, at which point Harris could break tie votes as vice president. Without that, Republicans are set to stymie Biden.

“I think it will be issue by issue, in terms of whether Republicans will work with Democrats, and vice versa,” Christie said.

“If there is a mandate, the mandate is, ‘We want people to work together,’” Republican Senator Roy Blunt told ABC. Romney, a frequent Trump critic, told CNN that Republicans would fight for conservative principles, and oppose measures such as the Green New Deal. Romney declined to say who he voted for.

Instead of firing missiles, Iran’s weird holy man has taken to lobbing insults.  His murderous regime, responsible for creating and funding mayhem all over the Middle East and elsewhere, after gunning down hundreds if not thousands of ticked Iranian citizens, is calling us names.  That’s rich.  But that’s the BIG news.  The Supreme Leader fights back!  Verbally.  Guess they showed us.

It turns out the reports of no injuries in their missile attacks on U. S. installations in Iraq may have been premature.  Now we’re hearing of concussion injuries that weren’t immediately apparent, and we hope none are serious.  For everyone’s sake, it’s a good thing those attacks didn’t kill any Americans.  Otherwise, we might all be in a completely different situation.

We couldn’t have imagined that taking out one of the world’s bloodthirstiest terrorists would be construed by the mainstream as a big disaster, possibly igniting World War III.  The mainstream and the entrenched bureaucracy wrung its hands over the prospects of massive retaliation and a war that would envelop not only the Middle East, but all of human civilization.  They were wrong. The people of Iran have taken to the streets in numbers never seen before, in support of freedom, something no one under the age of 40 over there has ever known.

One of the foremost proponents of impeachment, and one of the reliable Trump accusers on network TV (David Gergen), has actually gone to worrying aloud over the prospect that the Islamic regime in Iran might collapse.  That would be his, and all the bobbing heads’ worst nightmare.  There would be no stopping the incumbent President if that were to happen, he said.

Unless of course, their impeachment charade turns out to be successful, and they could realize their nightly dream of removing him from office.  The troupe of impeachment managers ceremoniously brought their articles of impeachment to the Senate two by two, taking little half steps as they shuffled down the aisle.  It looked like a funeral without the casket.  If any justice remains to be had, it will be their own.  But if you consume the mainstream media, you see what we’ve seen for three years now.  They think they’ve almost got him.  Any minute now the bombshell they’ve promised every day for what seems like a lifetime will chase him from public view, and they can get back on the track of the previous eight years.  Smugly calling us all a bunch of racist, bigoted homophobes and regulating our consumption of water and production of carbon.

They could save the human race if they could just create the enforcement mechanisms to make us comply with every detail of their socialist Utopian dream, the Green New Deal, and the long and growing list of words and phrases we must not utter.  And they’re not shy.  One billionaire candidate runs ads saying, “We’ll save the world, and we’ll do it together.”  Unfortunately, saving the world means the destruction of Western civilization and the revocation of the freedoms with which we’ve been abundantly blessed.

There is a realization that is really quite stunning, yet entirely plausible in this developing circumstance.  We’ve all watched as everything the President supports has become intolerable to those who hate everything about him.  This has come to include support of Israel.  The last president treated that country like an ugly stepchild and sought to undermine Prime Minister Netanyahu and get him defeated.  With the miraculous advent of the Trump Presidency, we’ve seen a total revival of the traditional friendship and alliance that we’ve grown to expect over the decades.  But neither the media nor the President’s rivals can accept anything he says or does without finding fault.  We’ve seen them find fault with everything, including taking out Iran’s foremost plotter of terror.  They shook their heads in bewilderment when the U. S. embassy was moved to Jerusalem, concerned that it would just make all parties in the region (save for Israel) hate us all the more.  They already want everybody dead, so how much more could they hate us?  It’s hard to digest how uninformed, or ill-informed millions of people are, but most all of big media and the social media giants are working overtime to ensure that is the case.

If and when the would-be socialists (come communists) ever get control again, will the U. S. still support Israel financially and militarily?  The Bible foretells a time when armies will surround Jerusalem as a harbinger of end-time events, and alludes to a power in Europe that will enslave all mankind.  No doubt the media and the D. C. swamp would prefer that situation to the one they face.  That time is not yet, and we can praise God for that.

Why was this guy was working as a mechanic at American Airlines?  Abdul-Majeed Marouf Ahmed Alani tried to sabotage an American jet just before it was due to fly 150 passengers to Nassau, Bahamas back in July.  He said he didn’t intend to harm the airplane or its passengers, but he figured that he’d get overtime work when the plane was delayed or grounded due to problems he created with the navigational system.  It seems contract negotiations with his union were taking too long and he needed the income.  Terrorism?  No, nothing of the kind.  He just needed the extra pay.

It’s a little unsettling.  The answer to the opening question is probably that the airline is sensitive to “diversity” quotas and therefore must hire Abdullahs, Mohammmeds, and Ahmeds to avoid lawsuits alleging discrimination.  When you’re walking to your gate, it’s a little unsettling when you hear the name “Abdullah!” shouted and echoing through the concourse.  That happened recently, but it was only one janitor (probably with a badge that allowed security to be circumvented) calling to another.

People who don’t follow current events may not know how crazy things are getting, and that would be reason enough to avoid being informed.  It’s rather unnerving, and getting more so by the day.

The crop of presidential hopefuls are floating ideas that would end modern life as we know it.  They demand control over what we eat, what we drive, how much energy we consume, the list is literally endless.  Climate change, according to CNN and the seven-hour special they put on this week, is a crisis.  We must do what these people say, or we’re complicit with destruction of the planet.  They’ll outlaw all the things that make life comfortable, especially energy production.  Offshore drilling?  They want it banned.  Fracking?  They’ll put an immediate stop to it.  How much would we be paying if we were still hostage to Muslim nations?  Probably twice what we are.

There will be pain, both economic and physical, but according to the would-be dictators, we must suffer if the planet is to be saved.  The pope warned this week that we must begin to live simpler lives, just before boarding his Vatican jet to fly to Africa.  They claim WE need to lead simpler lives while they have no intention of doing so.  Why in these “debates” does no one ask what is being done to limit the vast unregulated pollution in China, India, and Singapore?  They act as if controlling every aspect of life in America is somehow going to alter future climate, when they can’t even predict what will happen next week, let alone 40 or 50 years out.  The arrogance of those espousing global warming is off the chart.  But, with the help of the mainstream media, they’ll shame us, call us every name in the book and claim we’re “destroying the planet” if we don’t go along with a scam that puts them in charge of every detail.

A Swedish professor, Magnus Söderlund, just went on record to condone cannibalism, because, you know, climate change is making resources scarce.  He’s open to the hideous reality himself because he says revulsion against the practice is a “conservative taboo,” and he wouldn’t want to appear conservative.  This stuff is sick and getting worse if that’s possible.

San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors have just declared the NRA a terrorist organization!  Never mind that it dates back to the late 1800s, and has been responsible for teaching millions how to handle and operate firearms safely.  So, if the NRA is a “terrorist organization,” that means that all its members are supporting a terrorist organization.  Idiocy is contagious, and these people are sick!

But all this nonsense is leading to an obvious conclusion.

Eventually, they’ll declare us all criminals of one stripe or another.  We’re either out to “destroy the planet,” or supporting terrorism, or bigoted haters or…  There’s another wrinkle every day or two.  Ultimately, they want people with whom they disagree to be banished from society.  It’s extremely disconcerting to see that the mainstream media, educational institutions, and major corporations have fallen in line.  But they need the financial institutions to police everybody’s actions.  That ought to fix us!  They’ll deny credit to businesses or individuals who violate their snowflake sensibilities.  Internet giants have fallen in line or were promoting socialist ideology all along.  The biggest retailers are careful not to run afoul of the latest demands.  How long do you think it will be before credit-card companies and banks start to police the activities of customers?

It’s coming.  The Bible tells us no one will be able to buy or sell unless they sign on to global dictates.  The demands and dictates are preached day and night in our newspapers and TV networks, and very few are willing to call it what it is.  Socialism, Communism, Globalism.  They want a One World System to make us sign on to their perverse righteousness and punish us if we don’t.  So far they’re just calling us names.  The goal is to force us to “convert,” or failing that, just put us completely out of business.

Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren — the presidential primary field’s liberal standard-bearers — were pulled into what was essentially a two-and-a-half-hour fight with their more moderate rivals Tuesday night at the second round of Democratic nomination debates.

RYAN, SANDERS CLASH ON CLIMATE CHANGE: ‘YOU DON’T HAVE TO YELL’

The result was the party’s divide on full display, with the center-left (and lower-polling) contenders fiercely arguing that policies like “Medicare-for-all” and the Green New Deal will “FedEx the election” to President Trump, and the higher-profile candidates on the left flank just as fiercely arguing that their policies are the kind of bold solutions America needs.

Their frustration mounted, with Sanders at one point firing back at Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan for claiming the Vermont senator didn’t really know “Medicare-for-all” would provide coverage better than the current plans Americans would lose if the country moved to a single-payer system.

“I do know. And I wrote the damn bill,” Sanders snapped.

Former Maryland Rep. John Delaney, who elbowed his way into claiming considerable airtime during the Detroit debate, charged at another point: “I think Democrats win when we run on real solutions, not impossible promises.”

Warren shot back: “I don’t understand why anybody goes to all the trouble of running for president of the United States just to talk about what we really can’t do and shouldn’t fight for.”

The line drew loud applause from the room and crystallized the broader debate in the Democratic primary right now, as many in the field gravitate toward liberal policy positions amid warnings from other candidates about the implications for the November 2020 general election.

“That is a disaster at the ballot box. You might as well FedEx the election to Donald Trump,” former Colorado Gov. John  Hickenlooper charged, in reference to the notion of guaranteeing jobs under the Green New Deal or taking away private insurance under Medicare-for-all.

For their part, Sanders, I-Vt., and Warren, D-Mass., largely avoided sparring with each other, maintaining a virtual truce that’s been in place on the campaign trail. Both sought to keep focus trained on Trump. Sanders lobbed a litany of insults at the president throughout the debate, labeling him a sexist, a racist, a xenophobe and a “pathological liar.”

But they were repeatedly pulled into the scrum by their on-stage rivals.
