Aeroflot said it was experiencing service disruptions to all of its electronic systems and had to adjust flight schedules.

The airline gave no further details about the cyberattack or how long it would take to restore services but did warn passengers of delays and cancellations.

A big leak of data from a Chinese cybersecurity firm has revealed state security agents paying tens of thousands of pounds to harvest data on targets, including foreign governments, while hackers hoover up huge amounts of information on any person or institution who might be of interest to their prospective clients.

The cache of more than 500 leaked files from the Chinese firm I-Soon was posted on the developer website Github and is thought by cybersecurity experts to be genuine. Some of the targets discussed include Nato and the UK Foreign Office.

The leak provides an unprecedented insight into the world of China’s hackers for hire, which the head of the UK’s security services has called a “massive” challenge for the country.

It is the first time the Netherlands has publicly attributed cyber espionage to China, as national security tensions grow between the two countries.

“It is important to ensure that espionage activities of this nature committed by China become public knowledge since this will help to increase international resilience to this type of cyber espionage,” Dutch Defence Minister Kajsa Ollongren said.

The agencies, known by their Dutch acronyms MIVD and AIVD, said the hackers had placed malicious software, or malware, that cloaked its own activity inside an armed forces network used by 50 people for unclassified research.

The probe, which is being carried out in conjunction with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), is trying to determine the extent of the data obtained by the group known as Andariel, Jeong Jin-ho, who heads a team at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency investigating the case, told Reuters.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury in 2019 listed Andariel as a North Korean state-sponsored hacking group, focused on conducting malicious cyber operations on foreign businesses, government agencies and the defence industry.

Meta said that “perception hacking” is designed to sow doubt in democratic processes.

“We removed 4,789 Facebook accounts for violating our policy against coordinated inauthentic behavior,” Meta said in a statement. “This network originated in China and targeted the United States.”

Reuters found cyber-espionage teams linked to the North Korean government, which security researchers call ScarCruft and Lazarus, secretly installed stealthy digital backdoors into systems at NPO Mashinostroyeniya, a rocket design bureau based in Reutov, a small town on the outskirts of Moscow.

Reuters could not determine whether any data was taken during the intrusion or what information may have been viewed. In the months following the digital break-in Pyongyang announced several developments in its banned ballistic missile programme but it is not clear if this was related to the breach.

Experts say the incident shows how the isolated country will even target its allies, such as Russia, in a bid to acquire critical technologies.

The hackers are using VPNFilter malware to target small office and home office routers, the FBI said. “VPNFilter is able to render small office and home office routers inoperable,” the FBI warns. “The malware can potentially also collect information passing through the router. Detection and analysis of the malware’s network activity is complicated by its use of encryption.”

The feds recommends “any owner of small office and home office routers reboot the devices to temporarily disrupt the malware and aid the potential identification of infected devices.” They also advise to consider disabling remote management settings on devices, use encryption, upgrade firmer and choose new and different passwords, which is pretty much best practice anyway.

The IC3, formerly known as the Internet Fraud Complaint Center was renamed in October 2003 to include this kind of attack. Their stated mission “is to provide the public with a reliable and convenient reporting mechanism to submit information to the Federal Bureau of Investigation concerning suspected Internet-facilitated criminal activity and to develop effective alliances with law enforcement and industry partners.”

Today, that means telling you to reboot your router, so hop to it.
