KARACHI: Under the influence of a heatwave that has gripped Sindh and Punjab, Karachiites experienced the hottest night in April on Friday when the mercury did not drop below 29.4 degrees Celsius (84.92 F.), Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) officials said on Saturday.

The hottest place in the country in the daytime was Jacobabad where 49 degrees Celsius was recorded. “The night between Friday and Saturday was the hottest night in April in Karachi when the mercury did not drop below 29.4 degrees Celsius (84.92 F.). Previously, the hottest night in April was recorded in 2010 when the minimum temperature of 28 degrees Celsius (82.4 F.) was recorded in the night,” Chief Meteorological Officer (CMO) Sindh Sardar Sarfraz told The News on Saturday. Maximum temperature in Karachi remained at 40.6 degrees Celsius (105.08 F.) on Saturday, he added.

Other cities of Sindh also remained in the grip of an extreme heatwave and in most cities, maximum temperature remained above 40 degrees, PMD officials said and added that Jacobabad remained the hottest place in Sindh where the mercury touched 49 degrees Celsius (120.2 F.).

The second hottest place was Mohenjo Daro with 48 degrees Celsius, in Larkana and Nawabshah the mercury touched 47.5 degrees Celsius (117,5) F.), Rohri 47 degrees Celsius, Padidan and Sakrand 46 degrees Celsius, in Chorr and Hyderabad temperature remained at 45.7 Celsius (114.26 F.), in Sukkur and Mithi the temperature remained at 45.5 Celsius, in Mipurkhas the mercury touched 42.5 degrees Celisus.

In Balochistan, Sibbi and Turbat remained the hottest places with maximum temperature ranging between 47 and 46 degrees Celsius (116.6 and 114.8 F.) ( respectively, PMD officials said.

In Punjab, Bahawalpur remained the hottest city with maximum temperature reaching up to 46 degrees Celsius (114.8 F.) while in Faisalabad, Multan and Dera Ghazi Khan the maximum temperature remained at 45 degrees Celsius (113 F.)while in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the maximum temperature was recorded in Dera Ismail Khan which was 44 degrees Celsius (111.2 F.).

Tando Jam was the coolest place in Sindh where the maximum temperature of 39 degrees Celsius was recorded, PMD officials said. Chief Meteorological Officer (CMO) Sindh Sardar Sarfraz said the prevailing severe heatwave conditions in interior Sindh would persist till Monday, May 2, adding that daytime maximum temperatures might rise to 46-48 degrees Celsius (114.8-118.4 F.) in Dadu, Shaheed Benazeerabad, Jacobabad, Larkana, Sukkur districts during the period.

Badin, Tharparkar, Umerkot and Hyderabad districts may experience maximum temperature 42-44 degrees Celsius (107.6-111.2), he said and advised people to take care during peak heatwave hours.

He said that weather was expected to remain very hot and dry with maximum temperature ranging between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius (100.4 and 104 F.) and added that there were chances of strong, dusty winds that might convert into duststorms occasionally.

The Met office said a westerly wave is likely to enter Balochistan from Monday and under its influence, dust-thunderstorm and rain is expected in Sukkur, Larkana, Dadu, Jacobabad Shikarpur and Kambar-Shahdadkot areas between May 2 and 4.

There are also chances of duststorm in Karachi, Hyderabad, Shaheed Benazirabad, Thatta, Badin, Mirpurkhas and Umerkot districts on May 2.

Meanwhile, provincial Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon advised citizens to take precautionary measures to save themselves, especially children and elderly people from the extreme heatwave. He said the province would be in the grip of the heatwave till May 2 and citizens should avoid leaving their homes unnecessarily during the day.

The minister said that the Sindh government had already directed the district administration to make arrangements and allocate special wards in hospitals and health centers for those affected by the heatwave. Sharjeel Memon urged school administrations to take necessary steps to protect young children from heatstroke.

News Desk adds: Northwest and central India experienced their hottest April in 122 years with average maximum temperatures reaching 35.9 and 37.78 degrees Celsius (96.62 and 100.004 F.) respectively, the weather office said on Saturday.

Addressing a press conference, India Meteorological Department Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said northwest and west central parts of the country — Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana — will continue to experience above normal temperatures in May as well, foreign media reported.

Nights would be warmer in May in most parts of the country, except some regions of south peninsular India, Mohapatra said.

The average temperatures observed pan-India for April was 35.05 degrees (95.05 F.), which was the fourth highest in 122 years, he said.

“The average rainfall in May 2022 over the country is most likely to be above normal,” the Meteorological Department DG said.

However, parts of northwest and northeast India as well as the extreme southeast Peninsula are expected to get below normal rainfall in May, he said.

The high temperatures in March and April were attributed to “continuously scanty rainfall activity”, he said.

In March, northwest India recorded a deficit in rainfall of around 89 per cent, while the deficit was nearly 83 per cent in April, mainly on account of feeble and dry western disturbances, Mohapatra said.

North India witnessed six western disturbances but they were mostly feeble and moved across the higher parts of the Himalayas, he said, adding that the last three western disturbances caused strong winds in parts of Delhi and duststorms over Rajasthan in April.

TOKYO, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) — Japan’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency said Wednesday that 23 people died among 12,751 people who were rushed to hospitals due to heat-related illnesses across Japan over the week from Aug. 5.

Amid a protracted heatwave that has scorched wide swathes of Japan, the agency’s preliminary data showed that the number of people rushed to the hospital due to the heat had risen past the 10,000 level for the second straight week.

Of those rushed to the hospital, the agency said that 400 of them had to be admitted for treatment of severe symptoms for at least three weeks. Shorter stays in the hospital were required for around 4,500 patients, the agency also said.

Tokyo saw the highest number of people treated for heat-related conditions at 1,465, followed by the neighboring prefecture of Saitama at 977 patients. Osaka, meanwhile, saw 897 people rushed to the hospital for treatment due to the severe heat.

Of the total people requiring hospital treatment, around 55 percent of them were aged 65 or older.

According to Japan’s Meteorological Agency (JMA) Wednesday, the highest recorded temperature anywhere in Japan this year was logged in Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture on the western coast, where the mercury soared to 40.3 degrees Celsius.

Also in Niigata, Sanjo City saw temperatures hit 39.5 degrees Celsius.

Cities in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Tottori Prefecture, and Hyogo Prefecture saw the mercury rise well over 37 degrees Celsius, the weather agency said.

The protracted heatwave is being caused by warm air from Typhoon Krosa, the 10th of the season, which may approach the western regions of Kyushu and Shikoku and cut a path through western Japan on Thursday, sweeping across the archipelago and causing unsettled fronts particularly in regions facing the Sea of Japan, the JMA said.

Eleven people died and 5,664 people were taken to hospitals in Japan due to heat-related medical issues last week when temperatures rose sharply following the end of the rainy season in most areas, the government said Tuesday.

The number of people sent to hospitals nearly tripled from 1,948 in the preceding week. Those aged 65 and older accounted for 52.6 percent of the total in the week to last Sunday, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency.

Of the 5,664 people, 119 displayed severe symptoms that would normally require at least three weeks of treatment as an inpatient, while 1,792 suffered less serious issues, necessitating shorter stays.

The 11 deaths were reported in 11 different areas among Japan’s 47 prefectures. Aichi Prefecture had the most people rushed to hospitals at 392, followed by Osaka Prefecture at 388 and Tokyo at 299.

As temperatures are likely to remain above the average in Japan in the upcoming week, the agency urged people to stay hydrated and to take rest occasionally.

The second pulse of a historic heat wave scorched Europe on Sunday and, only now, is starting to ease. The record-setting heat, occurring unusually early in the summer, will long be remembered for its intensity and scope.

Between Wednesday and Sunday, heat records were not just broken by a hair, but in many instances were shattered by multiple degrees.

Eight European countries experienced their highest recorded June temperature, including:

Czech Republic: 101.3 degrees (38.9 Celsius) in Doksany, breaking a record of 100.8 degrees in 2000.

France: 114.6 degrees (45.9 Celsius) in Gallargues-le-Montueux, surpassing 111.4 degrees set in 2003. This mark is not only unprecedented for June, but also any month of the year and is known as a record.

Germany: 103.3 degrees (39.6 Celsius) in Bernburg. The old record was 101.5 degrees set June 26 and before that 101.3 degrees in 1947.

Luxembourg: 98.2 degrees (36.8 Celsius) in Petange, breaking the old record of 97 degrees in 2017.

Poland: 100.8 degrees (38.2 Celsius) in Radzyn, which broke a record of 100.4 from 1935.

Principality of Andorra: 100 degrees (37.8 Celsius) in Borda Vidal. The record had been 96.8 degrees in 1935.

Lichtenstein and Switzerland also broke their June temperature records Sunday, according to Weather Underground.

In addition to the national records set, hundreds of cities and municipalities in Western and Central Europe set June and all-time records.

On Sunday alone, more than 30 locations in Central Europe — many in Germany — set all-time heat records, Weather Underground reported.

Large portions of Europe were 15 degrees or more above normal for the week ending Monday morning. (Weatherbell.com)

In France, where vineyards were left scorched by heat, 13 weather stations broke the country’s all-time heat record of 111.4 degrees (44.1 Celsius) Friday, including three by at least one degree.

France is now one of seven European nations to reach temperatures of at least 113 degrees (45 Celsius), according to the Australian. The other six? Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, North Macedonia, Portugal and Spain.

Germany saw two bouts of record-breaking temperatures, which first set a new mark for June in the country, then set it again.

After readings hit at least 101.5 degrees (38.6 Celsius) near Berlin on Wednesday, besting the old June mark, the blast furnace sunk south late week but returned over the weekend. The second push sent temperatures soaring even higher, to 103.3 degrees (39.6 Celsius) in Bernburg, breaking the June record set last week.

More than a dozen long-standing weather stations, including in Berlin and Frankfurt, broke all-time heat records across the country.

Farther north, the United Kingdom got in on the heat as well. London’s Heathrow Airport and other parts of the city reached 93.2 degrees (34 Celsius) this weekend, which was just shy of a June record of 96 degrees (35.6 Celsius).

In Spain, the heat contributed to one of the most substantial firestorms in two decades in Spain. Madrid broke its previous June temperature record on three straight days, Thursday to Saturday with temperatures of 104 to 106 degrees (40.3 to 41.2 Celsius).

Major fires were also reported in southern France.

At least 10 people are confirmed dead from the heat, with the toll expected to rise.

While a heat wave like this has many causes, climate change almost certainly increased its intensity.

Europe’s five hottest summers in the past 500 years have happened in the past 15 years. The World Meteorological Organization also said last week that this event is “absolutely consistent” with climate change.

In the near term, a more typical summertime pattern is expected to return to large parts of Europe. While it might trend warmer than normal, another historic surge of heat is not on the immediate horizon.
