Chow Hang-tung, a prominent barrister, among those held over social media posts before Tiananmen Square anniversary

Hong Kong police have arrested six people, marking the first time that the city’s new national security law, known as Article 23, has been used against suspects since it was implemented in March.

The six people, aged between 37 and 65, are accused of publishing messages with seditious intent ahead of an “upcoming sensitive date”, according to a police statement.

One of the women arrested is now in prison. Local media identified her as Chow Hang-tung, a prominent barrister and human rights activist who has been jailed on other charges.

The police said the homes of the five other people arrested were searched, and that electronic devices were seized. “Those who intend to endanger national security should not imagine that they can avoid police pursuit anonymously online,” the police said.

Chow is the former vice-chair of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, a pro-democracy organisation that was disbanded in 2021 during the crackdown on pro-democracy voices in the city.

Hong Kong on Tuesday passed national security laws at the behest of Beijing, thwarting decades of public resistance in a move that critics say will strike a lasting blow to the partial autonomy the city had been promised by China.

Hong Kong already had a national security law, one that was imposed directly by China’s Communist Party leaders in 2020, after months of antigovernment demonstrations in the city. That law effectively silenced dissent in Hong Kong, sending opposition figures to jail or into exile.

The new legislation, which was passed with extraordinary speed, grants the authorities even more powers to crack down on opposition to Beijing and the Hong Kong government, establishing penalties — including life imprisonment — for political crimes like treason and insurrection, which are vaguely defined. It also targets offenses like “external interference” and the theft of state secrets, creating potential risks for multinational companies and international groups operating in the Asian financial center.

Finland’s police have said it was unlikely an explosion was the cause of the damage to a gas pipeline between Finland and Estonia as their investigation shifts focus to the potential role of a Hong Kong-flagged vessel.

The Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has now completed the “scene investigation” in the area of Balticconnector, which has been shut down after a damage-induced leak first reported by the state-owned co-owners October 8.

“The investigation has confirmed that the damage has been caused by an external mechanical force, and based on current knowledge there is no reason to believe the damage has been caused by an explosion”, Detective Superintendent Risto Lohi, general head of investigation at the NBI, said in a press release by the police agency on Friday.

The news release said, “The police have established in the criminal investigation that the movements of the vessel Newnew Polar Bear flying the flag of Hong Kong coincide with the time and place of the gas pipeline damage”.

Judge refuses Hong Kong government’s request for injunction against Glory to Hong Kong, saying it could have chilling effect

Hong Kong’s high court has rejected a government attempt to ban a protest song, Glory to Hong Kong, saying an injunction could create a chilling effect and undermine freedom of expression.

The government had sought the injunction banning online publication or distribution of the song, arguing it insulted China’s national anthem and could give people the impression that Hong Kong was an independent country.

The song became an unofficial anthem after the 2019 pro-democracy protests and ensuing government crackdown. Its Cantonese lyrics integrated a key protest slogan – “break now the dawn, liberate our Hong Kong; in common breath, revolution of our times” – and was widely adopted by protesters.

There is growing intolerance for any slogans, statements or paraphernalia that supported the pro-democracy movement. People have been arrested and some prosecuted for playing the song in public, possessing or holding Hong Kong independence flags, and shouting pro-independence slogans.

Books about the Tiananmen Square massacre, Hong Kong protest movements, and other subjects deemed politically sensitive by Beijing have been removed from the former British colony’s public libraries in the lead-up to the 34th anniversary of the killings.

Hong Kong media have reported a marked increase in the number of book and documentary removals, which have been growing since the authoritarian clampdown on Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement and the introduction of the national security law in 2020. It has resulted in a significant curtailing of political freedoms in the city and multiple arrests.

Late last month, the government’s audit commission report said the leisure and cultural services department, which operates Hong Kong’s libraries, needed to “step up efforts in examining library materials for safeguarding national security and taking follow-up actions”.

A Hong Kong pro-democracy protester has told how he was beaten in a “barbaric” attack by Chinese diplomats after being dragged into their consulate grounds in Manchester.

Bob Chan told a news conference in London yesterday that he suffered injuries requiring hospital treatment after being pulled away from a street demonstration and assaulted. “I am shocked because I never thought something like this could have happened in the UK,” he said.

Chan spoke out “after China, insisting its diplomats in Manchester were blameless, lodged a formal complaint with the UK government”, reported Hong Kong Free Press.
