The new fissure opened up near Sundhnuksgigar on the Reykjanes peninsula, the fifth eruption in the area since December.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) said the fissure was longer than 2.5km (1.5 miles) and was continuing to grow.

Footage from the site shows a wall of molten rock shooting up to a height of 50m, and huge plumes of ash covering most of the sky.

A volcano has erupted on the Reykjanes peninsula of south-west Iceland after weeks of intense earthquake activity.

Iceland has declared a state of emergency and evacuated a coastal town, saying there is a “significant likelihood” of a volcanic eruption in the coming days.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office reported intense earthquake swarms in the southwestern part of the country in recent weeks, likely tied to the movement of underground magma, or molten rock, in and around the Reykjanes Peninsula.

The sharp uptick in seismic activity prompted authorities to evacuate all 3,400 residents from the town of Grindavik on Saturday. The U.S. Embassy in Iceland, which issued its own volcano alert Friday, said seismic activity created ruptures on the primary road to Grindavik.

The quake that began yesterday originated west of the Blue Lagoon and considerably west of the eruption site at Fagradalsfjall.

The glow from the bubbling hot lava spewing out of the Fagradalsfjall volcano can be seen from the outskirts of Iceland’s capital, Reykjavík, 32 kilometres away. For others around the world, there’s always the live feed.

But this is the Reykjanes Peninsula’s first eruption of any volcano in around 800 years, and nothing quite matches the exhilaration of bearing witness to Planet Earth’s raw power up close and personal. Fagradalsfjall itself is made up of the Icelandic words for “beautiful valley mountain”.

Miguel Angel Morenatti, a Seville-based freelance photographer for The Associated Press, loves Iceland and brought forward his trip to the North Atlantic island nation when he heard of the eruption on March 19.

“As a landscape photographer, Iceland is a paradise,” he said.

Getting to the peak is not for everyone. It’s an arduous climb, taking two to three hours, but for Morenatti it’s been an experience that his five senses have never known. Morenatti hopes the photos he took capture some of this “wonder of nature”.

“When you finish the climb, you contemplate in amazement what happens there,” he said. “An impressive image, a Dante-esque sound, and a smell of gases that reaches your throat.”

With international travel slowly opening up, more and more people will be able to make the same journey to marvel at the volcanic show. And with summer looming, daylight will stretch into the small hours, so there won’t be such a hurry to make that arduous trek up.

Still, with the coronavirus pandemic still raging in many parts of the world, Iceland has strict rules on who can enter the country, which has a population of around 400,000. Getting fully vaccinated is key.

Parts of Iceland were left blanketed in an unprecedented amount of snow reaching up to 9 m (30 feet) a week after heavy snowfall and hurricane-force gales struck the country on December 10, 2019. Several regions in the rural areas especially in the north experienced power problems until December 16.

“We’ve never before had snow on this scale,” said Valgeir Thorvaldsson, director of the Icelandic Emigration Center in Hofsos, North Iceland. The center was located in two-story houses that almost disappeared under the thick snow.

“When building these houses, it never occurred to us we’d have to shovel [snow] off these roofs. There are, I believe, 9 m (30 feet) up to the gable of the biggest house, and the roofs are very steep, too,” he continued.

On Monday, December 16, Thorvaldson said there was an immense amount of snow beyond one of the houses that make up the Emigration Center. So if the snow begins to move, he explained, the house may crumble.

“Therefore, it is essential to make sure no one is inside.”

Moreover, Thorvaldson stated people still have a great deal of work to get things running again after the storm and the power outage.

The violent storm also killed up to 80 horses, according to Sigridur Bjornsdottir, a veterinarian for MAST, the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority.

Bjornsdottir noted that the weather turned out to be more severe than expected.

“This is very tragic for the farmers,” she stated.

“There is a tradition in Iceland for horses to stay outside year-round, and that has been the case since the country was settled. Farmers do not have stables for these horses, which require considerable space. It is, therefore, hard to imagine what more could have been done.”

On Thursday, December 19, the Icelandic Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for the central highlands and all the eastern half of the country.

Winds of 47 to 90 km/h (29 to 56 mph) are expected with the strongest wind hitting near Oraefajokull glacier with gusts to 125 km/h (78 mph).
