In a press release, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt explained that based on the agreement, “fully drafted IEEPA tariffs and sanctions” would be “held in reserve” and not signed unless the Colombia government failed to honor the agreement.

Leavitt added that “visa sanctions” issued by the State Department would remain in place “until the first planeload of Colombian deportees is successfully returned.” Leavitt also noted that “today’s events make clear to the world that America is respected again.” The press release comes after Colombian President Gustavo Petro backed down on refusing to accept two deportation flights from the U.S. and said he would “send his presidential plane to personally pick up the deported migrants.”

A massive group of illegal migrants Monday crossed into the U.S. waving a large Venezuelan flag and, according to Customs and Border Protection (CBP), attacked Border Patrol agents before being pushed back into the river as agents used crowd-control measures.

The incident, partially caught on video, saw a group of Venezuelan migrants crossing illegally into El Paso, Texas, as they waved the enormous flag. Agents can be seen pushing migrants back into the river while firing pepper balls near them to control the crowd.

In a statement, CBP said a group of Venezuelans had attempted to illegally enter the U.S. while protesting along the Rio Grande’s international boundary.

The agency said one of the protesters assaulted an agent with a flagpole while another threw a rock at agents, injuring one in the process. That in turn led Border Patrol to initiate crowd-control measures.

A Home Office spokesperson said: “The number of illegal migrants we have seen departing from France today (Thursday) is unacceptable.

“The British public have had enough of seeing people die in the Channel while ruthless criminal gangs profit from their misery and our New Plan for Immigration will fix the broken system which encourages migrants to make this lethal journey.”

The current record for the number of migrants arriving in the UK aboard small boats in a single day is 853, which was set on 3 November.

On Thursday, children wrapped in blankets were helped ashore in Dover, Kent as Border Force responded to a flurry of small boats in the English Channel.

Groups of people were seen arriving at the port aboard lifeboats as well as Border Force’s Hurricane vessel.

Further along the coast, in Hastings, more people were reportedly seen arriving on a beach after being picked up by the RNLI.

In recent weeks, at least two people have died while trying to attempt the perilous journey and several more have been feared to be lost at sea.

More than 22,300 people have successfully completed the trip this year, according to data compiled by the PA news agency – which is more than double the number for the whole of 2020.

In the last seven days, PA figures show more than 1,200 people have reached the UK.

In 2019, Home Secretary Priti Patel promised to make migrant crossings an “infrequent phenomenon” by spring 2020 and then pledged in August last year to “make this route unviable”.

Since then, the government has agreed to pay France £54m to increase immigration controls.

Turkey has largely managed to curb illegal migration to Europe via its territories, intercepting over 336,000 migrants so far this year and ensuring the return of more than 72,000 to their home countries.

Turkey continues to battle irregular or illegal migration as conflicts and poverty rage on elsewhere in the world and more people amass on its borders seeking a path to Europe. The country’s resolute efforts to stop the illegal migrants risking their lives and money continues unabated. Troops patrol the reinforced borders, while police and gendarme units spontaneously conduct raids in migration hot spots to stop illegal migrants. Between the start of January and Oct. 15 of this year, authorities intercepted 336,707 illegal migrants.

Turkey sits at the intersection of three continents, Asia, Europe, and Africa, thus putting it at the heart of migration for those from underdeveloped and developing countries mired in turmoil, poverty and other problems looking to settle in richer but increasingly xenophobic Western countries. As economic and political turmoil worsens, more people seek to reach Europe for a better life, a better job and/or joining their families already settled there. Amid an increasing influx of migrants, Turkey set up a Directorate-General of Migration for a more coordinated response to the illegal migration.

In September alone, 67,371 illegal migrants were intercepted, an all-time high in the span of a month. Official figures show 30% of illegal migrants were stopped in Edirne, Kırklareli and Tekirdağ, three provinces in northwestern Turkey, bordering or close to the border with Greece and Bulgaria. It is Turkey’s only land border with those two countries at the gateway of Europe. Greece and Bulgaria are the launch pad for migrants to reach Germany, which still counts among the most tolerating country for migrants among other European Union member states. Some 23% of illegal migrants stopped since January was in Istanbul, the country’s most populated city. Istanbul has been a major attraction for migrants for centuries, but the metropolis nowadays is overburdened with an ever-growing domestic population, courtesy of migrants from other Turkish cities. Migrants from African countries mostly prefer to stay and find work in the city, while others mostly spend a short time in the city and seek ways to reach Europe. Another 22% of illegal migrants were intercepted in İzmir, Çanakkale, Balıkesir, Muğla, Aydın, Antalya and Mersin, cities on Turkey’s Aegean and Mediterranean shores.

Illegal migrants take Aegean, Mediterranean and Black Sea routes to get to European countries; the Aegean is the most popular as it is dotted with Greek islands in close proximity to Turkish shores. Prior to their travel to western Turkey where the Aegean shores are located, migrants enter Turkey from borders in the east and south. Afghan migrants amass at the eastern border with Iran, especially in winter months. Though many make it into Turkey by crossing treacherous terrain, others succumb to freezing temperatures. If they can make it into Turkey alive and dodge authorities, migrants secretly travel to big cities in the west to work and live, though many prefer taking the Aegean route into Greece.

Authorities announced that 16,789 illegal migrants were intercepted last week alone and expect the number of stopped migrants to rise above 70,000 by the end of this month.

The number of migrants deported to their countries also increased. Last month, 10,720 migrants were sent back to their home countries, the all-time highest in the number of deported migrants in one month. As of Oct. 12, 72,029 migrants have been returned home, according to official figures.

Hundreds of illegal migrants occupied the Paris Charles de Gaulle airport in France, preventing people from boarding their flights and demanding to speak to Emmanuel Macron’s prime minister, Edouard Philippe.

“France does not belong to the French! Everyone has a right to be here!” yelled one of the migrants, organised by the pro-migration La Chapelle Debout group, through a loudspeaker, as they pressed for their presence in the country to be regularized.

Calling themselves “Black Vests” in a homage — of sorts — to the Yellow Vests who have been protesting Emmanuel Macron for months, the migrants also demanded Air France “stop any financial, material, logistical or political participation in deportations” in a statement published on Facebook.

Le Parisien reported that Paris Charles de Gaulle, the largest international airport in France, and second-largest in the European Union behind Britain’s London Heathrow, was targeted because of its proximity to an administrative detention centre in nearby Mesnil-Amelot (Seine-et-Marne), where illegal aliens are held prior to their expulsion from the country.

Air France, which the Black Vests denounced as the “official deporter of the French state”, did send a delegation to treat with the migrants’ representatives, and promised to “report their grievances to the management”.

The airline declined to comment on the incident to the media, however, referring reporters to the police prefecture.

Illegal migrants appear to have little fear of reprisals for such actions, with hundreds having conducted a similar protest demanding regularisation outside the Paris police quarters in January, according to Le Parisien.

They were even more brazen in 2018, storming the historic Basilica of Saint-Denis, which holds the tombs of many of France’s kings, alongside anti-borders left-wingers, forcing clergymen to cancel a Catholic mass and remaining in situ until the authorities forcibly ejected them from the premises.

National populist leader Marine Le Pen condemned the seeming involvement of left-wing politicians in the demonstration, blasting that, “By calling migrants to desecrate the Basilica of St. Denis, Necropolis of our Kings… the far-left show that, in their immigrationist madness, they are ready to trample our civilisation and desecrate a place of historical worship.”

Babiš, along with leaders from Poland and Hungary, is against a European Union plan to spend more than $11 billion on Frontex, the EU’s border and coast guard agency. The proposed plan would allow for the agency to increase the number of border officers from 1,500 to 10,000. Babiš, however, says that the EU should instead invest in a strategy similar to the Marshall Plan, which would convince likely migrants to stay in Africa.

“These people should stay home and we should help them in Africa. The people around Syria…they would like to return home. Smugglers made €5.7 billion ($6.5 billion) in 2016 and we have to stop it. They have their culture, we have our culture. They have their values, but we want to keep [our] values, Babiš told The Guardian.

The businessman turned politician said that instead of providing more money and expanding Frontex, countries should be individually charged with protecting their borders.

The Czech prime minister joined Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki at Frontex’s headquarters in Warsaw last week where the pair reiterated their opposition to enlarging the agency, saying that such a move would endanger the sovereignty of individual countries and reduce the amount of funding provided for infrastructure.

“We worry that more money for Frontex will mean less money for structural funds, less money for road or railway development,” Morawiecki said, according to Euractiv.

“We central European parties want to finally catch up to the quality of life enjoyed by Western Europe. That’s the point of the structural funds,” he continued.

Babiš made his views on migration known when he refused to take in a portion of around 450 migrants rescued at sea in July, saying that taking in more migrants was a “road to hell” for Europe, adding that the bloc needed to send a clear message that it would no longer accept migrants.

More than 94,000 migrants have arrived in Europe by sea since January, according to the United Nations International Organization for Migration. This is a significantly lower amount than last year, when 146,898 migrants made the journey between January and October.
