]]> Numerous economic and political challenges could come with separating, U of A professor says.

The Alberta independence movement has made its way to St. Albert, after Stay Free Alberta hosted one of two petition signings this past Friday.

After a petition signing event in Morinville last week, Stay Free Alberta canvassers held a petition signing at Lois Hole Centennial Provincial Park on Feb. 6. It is the first of two signings scheduled to happen in the city, with the second set for Feb. 14 at the Pineview Room of St. Albert Inn and Suites.

St. Albert resident Tim Hirtle, who previously signed the petition in Fort Saskatchewan and came out to show his support, said he thinks Alberta should separate from Canada because he feels Alberta isn’t represented fairly, and also complained about equalization payments.

]]> Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin on Friday offered a ‘brutally honest’ assessment of Europe’s defence capabilities, stating bluntly that ‘we’re not strong enough’ to stand up to Moscow alone before warning against dependence on China.

‘We should make sure that we are stronger,’ Marin said in Sydney on Friday, before adding: ‘I’ll be brutally honest with you, Europe isn’t strong enough. We would be in trouble without the United States.’

She went on to say Europe has ‘become far too dependent on cooperation with regimes that do not share our common values’, using Finland‘s reliance on Russian energy as an example, before turning to China.
