Italy approves new migration bill including powers to impose ‘naval blockades’ on migrant ships

ROME (AP) — Italy’s conservative government led by Premier Giorgia Meloni on Wednesday approved a bill introducing new measures aimed at fighting illegal immigration, including a so-called “naval blockade” for migrant ships trying to reach Italian shores.

A cabinet meeting in the late afternoon gave the go-ahead to the bill, which now needs to be discussed and approved in both chambers of parliament before becoming effective.

Italy’s new migration package — which also includes stricter surveillance at borders and cooperation with European agencies — comes a day after the approval of the new EU pact on migration and asylum, which Rome plans to implement swiftly.

Six European economies vow to drive progress on stalled projects

BERLIN, Jan 28 (Reuters) – Ministers from six leading European economies including Germany and France vowed to be the drivers of European progress as they tackled how to advance projects stalled by the EU’s complex decision-making process at a time of geopolitical upheaval.

The video conference including finance and economy ministers from Poland, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands followed ridicule from U.S. President Donald Trump‘s administration over the time it takes the 27-country European Union to make decisions.

“As six major economies in Europe, we now want to be the drivers,” German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil said after the call. “We are providing momentum; others can join. What matters is strengthening our competitiveness and our defence capability.”

A Ukrainian man alleged to have been involved in the 2022 detonation of the Nord Stream pipelines carrying gas from Russia to Germany has been arrested in Italy, according to German authorities.

The man, identified only as Serhiy K, is believed to have been onboard the sailing boat from where the attack was allegedly carried out.

Carabinieri arrested him on Wednesday evening near Rimini after a European arrest warrant was issued on Monday, Germany’s federal prosecutor’s office (GBA) said on Thursday.

A boat carrying migrants capsizes off Italy, killing at least 26

ROME (AP) — A boat carrying nearly 100 migrants capsized Wednesday in international waters off the Italian island of Lampedusa, killing at least 26 people and leaving about a dozen missing, the Italian coast guard and U.N. agencies said.

Sixty survivors were brought to a center in Lampedusa, said Filippo Ungaro, a UNHCR spokesperson in Italy. There were 92 to 97 migrants on board when the boat departed Libya, according to survivor accounts. Authorities were still searching for any remaining survivors.

The coast guard said in a statement that the death toll stood at 26, but was still “provisional and being updated.”

Italian migrant rescuers to face trial over cash from shipping giant Maersk

ROME, May 29, 2025 (BSS/AFP) – Top officials from a group that rescues undocumented migrants from boats in the Mediterranean will go on trial in Italy in October on charges of aiding illegal immigration, the group announced Wednesday.

The Mediterranea Saving Humans (MSH) group said in a Facebook post that the case had been sent to trial and hearings would start on October 21 against three top representatives and the captain and three crew from one of the vessels its uses.

According to prosecutors, the AP Moeller-Maersk shipping giant paid 125,000 euros ($140,000) to the Idra company that oversees MSH, just after the group took 27 migrants off one of the Danish carrier’s ships in September 2020.

The migrants had been stuck on the vessel for more than one month.

Albania: Italian government’s migrant centres ready to host first consignment

The centres built by the Italian government in Albania are ready to host migrants rescued in the Mediterranean, eleven months after the agreement between the two countries was signed.

Up to 400 people will initially be sent there. Exclusively male, these migrants will have been rescued by Italian ships in the Mediterranean Sea before being transported to the coastal Albanian town of Shengjin.

Here, a centre ran by Italian staff has been set up. Interpreters, medicals visits and the possibility of applying for asylum are guaranteed.

The main section is meant to house asylum seekers while their requests are being processed.

Applications must be completed within 28 days, according to the accelerated procedure foreseen in Italian law. During this time, applicants will be able to meet lawyers and staff from international organizations.

ROME, June 4 (Reuters) – Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will visit a site in Albania on Wednesday where her government plans to build a reception camp to house thousands of migrants picked up at sea.

Looking to curb migration to Italy, Meloni signed a deal with Albania last year to send some asylum-seekers to the Balkan country and process the asylum requests there.

Here are some facts about the plan.

WHAT IS IN THE DEAL?

The accord, agreed for an initial five years, foresees disembarking 36,000 migrants a year at the Albanian port of Shengjin, about 75 km (45 miles) south of the country’s capital, Tirana. Their cases will be processed at a centre being built at a nearby air base in Gjader, which can hold 3,000 people.

China trials visa-free travel for six countries

China is trialling visa-free travel for citizens from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Malaysia for a year, its foreign ministry said.

From December to 30 November 2024, ordinary passport holders from these countries can do business or travel in China without a visa for up to 15 days.

This is to help “promote China’s high-quality development and opening up”, spokeswoman Mao Ning said on Friday.

Currently, most travellers need a visa to enter China.

The rare examples of those exempt include citizens of Singapore and Brunei, who are entering China for business, tourism, family visits and transit for no more than 15 days.

Nutrinsect defies Italian food purists with cricket flour that can be incorporated into range of foods

A company that produces flour made from crickets has become the first in Italy to be given the green light to sell food made from insects for human consumption, defying Italian food purists and even a government attempt to curb its use.

Josè Francesco Cianni, the chief executive of Nutrinsect, said: “a new page in the history of food has been opened” now that his nutrient-packed flour can be incorporated into an array of food items.

“This is very big news for us,” said Cianni, whose main motive for the business initiative was to provide an alternative, sustainable protein source.

Since 2020, millions of crickets have been raised at the company’s plant in Montecassiano, a town in the central Marche region, where they are heat-treated before being frozen and ground into powder.

Moussa Faki welcomes Giorgia Meloni’s plan to strengthen relations but says ‘we are not beggars’

The chair of the African Union Commission has said “we are not beggars” as the Italian prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, outlined a plan aimed at helping African countries to prosper in return for curbing illegal immigration.

Speaking at the much anticipated Italy-Africa summit in Rome, Moussa Faki welcomed Italy’s overtures for a mutually beneficial strengthening of relations with the African continent, but said: “We cannot be satisfied with mere promises that can’t be kept.”

Faki said a “paradigm shift” was required to usher in “a new model of partnership” and pave the way “towards a more just and coherent world”. He said: “Africa does not want to reach out. We are not beggars.”
