Wassem Hazam, was “eliminated during a counterterrorism operation in the northern Samaria area,” the IDF wrote on X.

“He was identified alongside a terrorist cell in a vehicle in the area. Hazem was involved in carrying out and directing shooting and bombing attacks, and continuously advanced terrorist activities in the Judea and Samaria area,” IDF said.

The IDF posted a video on X depicting the strike that it said killed Hazem.

It added that Maysara Masharqa and Arafat Amer, who IDF said operated under Hazem’s command and “took part in shooting attacks against Israeli communities” were also killed by IDF aircraft as they attempted to flee form a vehicle they were in alongside Hazem.

The Israel Defense Forces said early Monday that security forces were conducting “an extensive counterterrorism effort” in the area of Jenin, a Palestinian city in the northern West Bank where Israel has conducted a series of recent raids and home to a refugee camp of more than 10,000 people that has been framed as a center of Palestinian resistance.

The officials said a “joint operations center” of militant group the Jenin Brigades within the camp was hit by the IDF and the Israel Security Agency, also known as Shin Bet.

The operational command center purportedly served as an advanced observation and reconnaissance center where accused armed terrorists would gather before and after conducting terrorist activities, the IDF said in a statement published to Telegram, adding that it is also a site where weapons and explosives were stored and was used as a coordination and communications hub.

The Palestinian Authority announced on Thursday evening that it has decided to halt security coordination with Israel.

The announcement was made after an emergency meeting of the Palestinian leadership in Ramallah to discuss the repercussions of the Israeli military operation in Jenin Refugee Camp, during which nine Palestinians were killed and 20 others injured, including four who are reported in critical condition.

In 2020, the PA took a similar decision but backtracked after five months.

“The security coordination with the Israeli occupation government is no longer existent as of now” said PA presidential spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudaineh, accusing Israel of committing a “massacre” against the Palestinians.
