Some of the ritziest districts in all the United States lie in chaotic rubble. Political correctness dictates that we all take a knee and realize the nation had it coming. The Senator from New York is beaming with pride. He’s proud of the protesters, and he’s proud of New York. Is he really!?! He needs to make that speech standing ankle-deep in broken glass out front of Macy’s.

Maybe some protester means well. But the screaming, cursing mob holding hundreds of police hostage while cities are systematically looted and burned is aiding and abetting the rampaging criminals. The Senator is no doubt proud that hundreds of criminals were released on account of the viral panic that news organizations are still pushing, albeit feebly. Bail reform was supposed to be a great improvement to the judicial system. At present, it means that thieves and arsonists are freely doing what they do. Apparently it was done of the basis of compassion and racial justice, but looks like a huge mistake right about now. But Chuck is proud.

Is there some doubt that at least a portion of the rampaging gangs that have torn American cities asunder were put back on the streets just in time? The Senator must be very proud. He’s undoubtedly proud of all the other sanctuary cities that put the wants and needs of criminals way ahead of the security of law-abiding citizens and proprietors of formerly successful businesses.

It was almost as if the Mayor of New York held the police at bay while the city burned. We hesitate to divine motives, but the fact is New York’s most glamorous districts were reduced to poverty while news reporters stood in their masks with cameras rolling. The looting went on hour after hour with no sign of any interference by law enforcement. Later we learn that there were some few hundreds of arrests, but the looters and rioters were immediately returned to the streets, thanks to the last time the legal system was “reformed.” Few if any are removed from the problem at hand.

Mad Dog Mattis finally lived up to his name. President Trump chose his top generals and advisors without litmus tests regarding their personal leanings. He expected everyone to behave professionally and live up to universal expectations of high standards. He thought they’d suspend any personal persuasions, performing their sworn duties on behalf of the United States. Boy was he wrong! Several of these “highly respected” professionals have shown themselves to be anything but. They keep their heads down, grumbling privately about the president until they arrive at what they believe to be an opportunity to do maximum damage. Then the long knives come out. Mad Dog suggested the mayhem we’re seeing is the logical result of three years of immature leadership, directing his comments at the President. So, what was the reason for Ferguson? Was it Obama’s fault? The ignorant protesters still act out the “hands up don’t shoot” fallacy. Even though it was proven to be false, the media continued to show great deference. They keep talking about the need for a conversation. But this has gone way beyond a discussion.

Mad Dog provided additional red meat to the angrily sneering “news” reporters. He’s bolstered their case allowing them to rub his military rank and service in everybody’s face while basking in the reflected glow of his intemperate comments. What former general attacks the President who promoted him so enthusiastically? The deep state undoubtedly cheered. At least Mad Dog gave them a little temporary cover. If there’s any shred of justice left in America, they’d better enjoy the moment.

Then there was the case of Mark Espers. He’s publicly stated his disagreement that the President would use the military to protect national monuments in Washington D. C., many of which have already been vandalized with slogans of the mob. Isn’t it great when those to whom the president entrusted important responsibilities defy him in public?

Now we’re supposed to worry about the Constitutional powers of the President to protect national monuments with the military, many of which have already been vandalized and fouled with nonsense slogans? Who does he think he is? How dare he call out the soldiers and Humvees to protect the symbols of America? Doesn’t he realize that someone might be upset? We’re all upset! It’s obvious the mob would break or topple every national symbol. They’d burn down the White House with President Trump inside, such is their wild-eyed rage. And they’re righteous, according to the media. No, the only “right” and equitable thing to do would be to join the protest. If the media had their way, we’d all go taunt some policeman while our buddies plunder the lives of those who worked for a living. That is until the “authorities” told them they couldn’t! What happened to the quarantine? We were told we’d be putting everybody in “danger” if we so much as leave the house. But we’re expected to display great deference and sympathy toward the mob burning up the lives of the law-abiding.

Violent mobs don’t have to stay home. They don’t have to worry about going to work, work is still closed in the cities with large protests, and the government will now make it possible to survive without working. They can stay up all night if they want. They no longer have jobs. Everyone else is quarantined! Nobody better dare get in the way of the rampage, because those jumping around in the faces of police are right, according to nearly every source of news. Their feelings have been hurt! You’ve got million-dollar ball players pretending to cry on national television because we don’t understand how “hurt” their feelings are. Make it a river. But then, where were the tears? Pinched up faces don’t move us much.

How dare we respect the flag? How dare we love the United States? Don’t we realize how racist we are? Don’t we realize that all the stealing is not really stealing at all? It’s “symbolic taking,” and we have to support it if not contribute to it. The news media has taken a knee, and they’re demanding we all do. Say that you respect the flag? You’ll be attacked, should they know your name. The anarchists are blowing up ATM machines, as many as 50 reported in Philadelphia alone, using dynamite. One idiot blew himself up in the process. And the uh, “protesters” have defaced nearly every memorial in D. C.

They’re arguing that the president is pushing beyond his authority to invoke the Insurrection Act used by several Presidents over the last hundred years. It was most recently used by President Bush Sr. in response to the Rodney King riots in Los Angeles. Is this current situation not infinitely worse? Back in the day Los Angeles was a significant concern. Today, law and order in the United States is breaking down completely, and Chuck Schumer is proud. Maybe he just wants to be the last one they loot and burn.

Imagine how proud he’ll be then.

It seems that the riots and looting is starting to recede. But don’t worry, another crisis has been planned, and another one after that. The only shame is that the coronavirus panic murdered the economy, and we’re all supposed to feel good about it. The “news” media is still pushing the virus. Commercials are still advising that we stay home and stay safe. They think we’ll continue doing business with them?

Russia collusion was a scam, and one that no-one has paid for, except for those who were falsely accused and broken by attorney’s fees. The Ukraine phone call impeachment was utter nonsense, despite the bug-eyed dumbster (Adam Schiff) to which we were all subjected. The reaction to the virus was all out of proportion to reality, but we’re going to be herded around by idiotic rules for the foreseeable future. Much to our amazement, the President must have been legitimately spooked by the dark predictions of medical professionals. He stood by while the economy was destroyed, even before the rampage started, and that’s a huge disappointment. Any suggestion that America might recover is enough to start another round of rioting. As we’ve realized for some time, those who hate this nation won’t be satisfied until it’s utterly destroyed. Sadly, that’s a real concern. We were right when we warned that things might get ugly. We didn’t know how right we were.

Calls to defund police departments are gaining steam. In Minneapolis, they’re talking about disbanding the police department completely. Imagine how peaceful the metropolis will be when there are no police. Come to think of it, that’s exactly what we’ve been watching! America has some serious problems all right. They have nothing to do with racism, but they have everything to do with the hideous sins that political correctness regards as national values. Have we forgotten that “values” like these got Sodom and Gomorrah burnt up? Forget about hurting the feelings of the mob. Why do you think we’ve been left vulnerable to these violent, America-hating leftists? And one more thing. They hated America long before the advent of President Donald Trump. This play-book was created by the radical movement clear back in the ’60s. One of the most prominent of them (Bill Ayers, Weather Underground) was Obama’s mentor. He’s been teaching…we wonder what. They were ready to destroy everything in the name of… yep, police brutality. Racial inequality. We lived through some idiotic episodes, and here they come again. This time with two generations of miseducated miscreants, taught by ’60’s era radicals. Nice.

US President Donald Trump has given troops permission to use lethal force if needed at the border with Mexico, adding that there could be a government shutdown next month over border security.

Trump’s statements come just one day after US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said he had been granted authority to allow troops to exhibit greater power to help protect border officials.

‘Dangerous disgrace’: Trump mulls breaking up 9th Circuit, hits back at SCOTUS chief justice

Around 5,800 active duty troops have been sent to the US-Mexico border to bolster defenses ahead of the expected arrival of a migrant caravan consisting mostly of Hondurans.

It comes just days after a judge temporarily blocked Trump’s order to ban Central American migrants who entered the US illegally from applying for asylum. The US president has repeatedly referred to the migrant caravan as an “invasion” and argued that it contains “hardened criminals.”

Earlier this month, Trump went so far as to state that when migrants throw rocks at border agents, they should consider it the same as a firearm attack.

“When they throw rocks like they did at the Mexico military police, consider it a rifle,” he said.

However, he tried to walk back that statement the very next day, saying that if agents or soldiers “are going to be hit in the face with rocks, we’re going to arrest those people. That doesn’t mean shoot them.”

The order to allow the military to use lethal force will likely be challenged in court, with activists saying it would violate the 1878 Posse Comitatus Act which bars active military from engaging in domestic law enforcement. However, military force is allowed to be used on US soil to “suppress insurrection or to enforce federal authority,” according to a report by the Congressional Research Service.

The migrant caravan currently consists of around 4,000 to 6,000 people, many of whom are camped in the Mexican border city of Tijuana, some sleeping on dirt fields and under bleachers inside a sports complex.

Residents of Tijuana have staged protests against the new arrivals, leading to riot police having to step in. Many residents shouted “No to the invasion!” and “Mexico first!”

Denmark is the latest nation to suspend arms exports to Saudi Arabia, in light of the brutal killing of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi by Saudi operatives and the kingdom’s role in the war in Yemen, the Reuters news agency reported Thursday.

The move, announced by the Danish foreign minister, also covers so-called dual-use materials that can be applied to military purposes.

Germany and Norway have also stopped supplying arms to Saudi Arabia, and earlier this month, Canadian Premier Justin Trudeau said he would weigh doing so.

Khashoggi, a critic of the Saudi government, was killed at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in early October by agents of the Saudi government. His body has not yet been found.

US President Donald Trump, however, said Tuesday that Khashoggi’s murder would not derail the US-Saudi relationship, in a move the American leader suggested also benefited Israel.

“We may never know all of the facts surrounding the murder of Mr Jamal Khashoggi. In any case, our relationship is with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” Trump said in a statement.

“They have been a great ally in our very important fight against Iran. The United States intends to remain a steadfast partner of Saudi Arabia to ensure the interests of our country, Israel and all other partners in the region,” the US president added.

In Yemen, Saudi Arabia is leading a coalition against Iranian-backed Shiite Houthi rebels in a war that is estimated by Save the Children to have caused
the death by extreme hunger or disease of at least 85,000 children aged under the age of 5.

After nearly four years, since the conflict began, up to 14 million people are at risk of famine, according to the United Nations.

On Wednesday, US Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis announced that peace talks to end the conflict would begin in Sweden next month.

At least eight migrants crossed into the US, and were promptly arrested by border patrol officers, an AFP correspondent said. Under a new executive order Trump issued last week, such migrants will not be allowed to apply for asylum, and face automatic deportation.

He said the military was helping border agents with a range of things, from ferrying them around by helicopter to putting up the razor-wire fencing that soldiers have been placing along the border.

There are now nearly 800 migrants from the original caravan in Tijuana, across the border from San Diego, California, after a new group of 350 arrived Wednesday morning.

Another 2,000 meanwhile traveled through the night on buses arranged by a Catholic priest, leaping rapidly into northern Mexico after an arduous, month-long trek across the south and center of the country.

The buses dropped them off in the town of Navojoa, in the northern state of Sonora, then returned to pick up a second group of 2,000 migrants who had stayed behind.

Navojoa sits about 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) from Tijuana, the spot where the migrants plan to cross the border, and more than 3,000 kilometers from the town where they began their journey on October 13: San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

But the caravan is moving far more quickly through the dangerous and sparsely populated north than it did through the south and center of the country, thanks to donated transport — sometimes from local authorities who would rather send the migrants on their way than host them in shelters.

“We want to arrive as soon as possible. We’ve been on the road for more than a month,” said Saul Rivera, 40, a construction worker from El Salvador.

– More caravans coming –

At the pace they are now traveling, the full caravan of some 5,000 migrants could be at the border by Friday.

Trump turned the caravan into a hot-button issue ahead of last week’s US midterm elections, claiming — without providing evidence — it included “hardened criminals” and “unknown Middle Easterners” who were about to “assault” the United States.

The migrants insist they are simply seeking a better future away from Central America’s “Northern Triangle” — El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, poor countries where gang violence has fueled some of the highest murder rates in the world.

At least two more caravans have formed behind the first, and are currently working their way up through Mexico.

This past week, North Korean official Kim Yong-chol abruptly cancelled a planned meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for this Thursday. As both countries seek to reconcile their differences and pursue détente, the latest developments in the bilateral relationship pose deep challenges for maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. Despite efforts in reducing tensions between the two countries, recent developments have impeded this progress. Pyongyang has recently threatened to restart its nuclear program this past weekend and has criticized continuing U.S. sanctions against the country, while the United States continues to participate in joint military exercises with South Korea.

In response to this cancelling and expected postponement of the meeting, President Donald Trump said at a press conference, “We are going to make it…another day. But we’re very happy with how it’s going with North Korea. We think it’s going fine. We’re in no rush.” U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert has said in a statement that Secretary Pompeo’s meeting with Kim Jong-un “will now take place at a later date,” they will reconvene “when their respective schedules permit,” and “ongoing conversations continue to take place.” An official from the South Korean Foreign Ministry has cautioned against reading too much in the postponement of the meeting: “[The postponement] should be seen as part of the process of achieving complete denuclearization and establishing a peace regime. We [South Korea] will continue to play our role to continue the momentum of dialogue.”

Analysts of the issue generally appear unsurprised by the announcement from North Korea. Terence Roehrig, professor of national security at the U.S. Naval War College, has told United Press International that it is not a surprise that there has been little progress on denuclearization. He has said, “I remain skeptical North Korea is going to be willing to give up its nuclear weapons.” Bruce Bennett, a senior defense researcher at the RAND Corporation, told UPI that the North Korean leader seems to be doing whatever he pleases while continuing to engage with the United States and South Korea. According to Woo Jung-yeop, a research fellow at the Sejong Institute, the postponing of the meeting signals that North Korea is not willing to meet the U.S.’ expectations.

While the rhetoric exchanged between the United States and North Korea is nothing like the sort of “fire and fury” of a year ago, there is a deep risk that both leaders could return to the bellicosity that threatened a nuclear escalation. A major obstacle to continuing progress in talks between Pyongyang and Washington has been growing tensions between the United States and China. With China as North Korea’s closest ally, China plays an important role in guiding North Korean foreign policy. However, as tensions increase between Beijing and Washington over trade and military dispositions, vis-à-vis the South China Sea and Taiwan, China’s continued support for U.S. diplomacy with North Korea will remain limited. President Trump himself has argued that the lack of progress in talks has been due to China’s “considerable aid” to North Korea and the United States’ position that China has been bypassing sanctions on North Korea.

In terms of North Korean actions, Pyongyang has itself done little to de-escalate tensions. Though Kim Jong-un jointly signed the Panmunjom Declaration with his South Korean counterpart in April of this year, and there have been other various efforts to pursue closer ties between the two Koreas, there have been few signs of demonstrative progress. In a September article by the Japanese newspaper The Nikkei, a recent report of the International Atomic Energy Agency has noted North Korea’s “continuation and further development” of its nuclear programs. Meanwhile, international efforts in pushing for North Korea’s denuclearization have failed thus far. While it is understandable that North Korea remains largely protective of its strongest asset in defending its sovereignty, it needs to be more transparent in priorities and what sort of results it expects from dialogue with the United States.

To resolve these issues, it is imperative that South Korea under President Moon Jae-in continues to maintain its central diplomatic role. While the South Korean President is losing support on domestic issues, after his summit with Kim Jong-un in September his approval rating rose to 61 percent, according to Gallup Korea; according to Realmeter, 71.6 percent of respondents backed the outcomes of the summit. Thus, with a South Korean public largely supporting his diplomatic efforts, President Moon certainly has the domestic legitimacy and support in order to pursue his diplomatic activities, vis-à-vis North Korea. While the South Korean leader has to play a balancing act between Pyongyang and Washington, there is perhaps no better leader guide the agenda of de-escalation.

Other efforts that may be promising are Russia’s request to China that it schedule a closed-door meeting of the United Nations Security Council for Thursday to discuss North Korea and advocate for an easing of U.N. sanctions as part of a denuclearization accord. On Friday, Secretary Pompeo and Secretary Mattis are due to meet their Chinese counterparts at the second U.S.-China Diplomatic and Security Dialogue, offering another venue with which to discuss North Korea.

As relations between Washington and Tehran sour, especially after the re-imposing of sanctions, it is vital that relations between Washington and Pyongyang do not reach such a state. With political tensions already at a high concerning the South China Sea, any further increase in hostilities in East Asia and the Asia-Pacific would pose deep challenges not only for the region, but for the world. With much of the world’s economy centered on China, South Korea, Japan, and the United States, stability in the Asia-Pacific would bolster security elsewhere. This postponement will hopefully be just a delay in ongoing talks and not a sign of a return to the hawkishness of 2017.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is planning to dispatch at least 800 active-duty troops to the southern border at the direction of a president who has sought to transform fears about immigration into electoral gains in the midterms as a caravan of thousands of migrants makes its way through Mexico.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis is expected to sign an order sending the troops to the border, bolstering National Guard forces already there, an official said Thursday. The action comes as President Donald Trump has spent recent days calling attention to the caravan of Central Americans slowly making its way by foot into southern Mexico but still more than 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) from U.S. soil.

Trump, who made fear about immigrants a major theme of his 2016 election campaign, has been eager to make it a top issue heading into the Nov. 6 midterm elections, which will determine control of Congress. The president and senior White House officials have long believed the issue is key to turning out his base of supporters.

The additional troops would provide logistical and other support to the Border Patrol, said the U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss a plan that had not been finalized and formally announced.

It’s not unusual for the National Guard to help with border security. Active-duty troops, however, are rarely deployed within the United States except for domestic emergencies like hurricanes or floods. Fears of militarizing the border were fanned by a May 1997 incident in which a Marine on a counter-narcotics mission shot to death an 18-year-old who was herding goats in Redford, Texas.

Troops being sent at Trump’s direction would not be on armed security missions. They would assist the Border Patrol by providing things such as vehicles, tents and equipment. There already are about 2,000 National Guard members there under a previous Pentagon arrangement.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said in an interview with Fox News on Thursday that the Department of Homeland Security had asked the Department of Defense to “bolster” their capabilities with air support, vehicle barriers, engineering and other logistical assistance. National Guard troops can perform those same functions, so it was not immediately clear why active-duty forces were sought.

Asked if the troops would be armed, Nielsen said Mattis would decide the rules of engagement, but added: “We do not have any intention right now to shoot at people. They will be apprehended, however.”

Trump has used the caravan to bolster his election-season warnings that the U.S. is being infiltrated by immigrants “pouring across the border” illegally.

He has claimed, without any apparent basis in fact, that “Middle Easterners” were among the group. At rallies and on Twitter, Trump has tried to portray Democrats as pro-illegal immigration, even claiming, with no evidence, that Democrats organized the caravan.

He tweeted Thursday that “Democrat inspired laws make it tough for us to stop people at the border” and said he was using the military to respond to what he called a “National Emergency.”

Many migrants in the sprawling caravan — once estimated by the United Nations to number more than 7,000 — are hoping to make it to the United States. Most are Hondurans, seeking to escape poverty and violence, and include families with children.

The caravan swelled dramatically soon after crossing the Mexican border on Oct. 19, but sickness, fear and police harassment have whittled down its numbers.

Trump tweeted a direct message to the migrants Thursday, urging them to return home.

“To those in the Caravan, turnaround,” he wrote. “We are not letting people into the United States illegally. Go back to your Country and if you want, apply for citizenship like millions of others are doing!”

The migrants have largely been disconnected from news reports about them. When asked about Trump’s tweets, they have generally responded that he should stop attacking them and said they would keep heading north.

Candy Guillermo, a 37-year-old migrant in the caravan who had heard about the plan to deploy troops, was surprised she and the children in the group would be considered a threat.

“Trump should be more humanitarian,” she said. “We only want to give our kids a better future.”

Migrants who do reach the U.S. border can claim asylum under U.S. and international law. Those who clear an initial screening are often released until their cases are decided in immigration court, which can take several years.

But Nielsen warned: “This caravan cannot come to the United States. They will not be allowed in. They will not be allowed to stay.”

In 2017, the U.S. had 331,700 asylum claims, more than any country in the world, according to the U.N. Refugee Agency. That’s nearly double the asylum claims the U.S. fielded in 2015 and nearly quadruple the claims in 2013.

Trump ordered the deployment of the National Guard earlier this year to respond to an increase in illegal crossings. Those troops are under the control of state governors and are limited to support roles such as providing surveillance.

The planned deployment of active-duty troops is in response to a request from the Department of Homeland Security, which manages the Border Patrol. Earlier this year, Mattis authorized Pentagon funding for up to 4,000 National Guard troops on the border. So far, only a little over 2,000 have been used.

Federal law prohibits the use of active-duty service members for law enforcement inside the U.S. unless specifically authorized by Congress.

Trump hinted at the troop announcement at a rally in Wisconsin on Wednesday. “Wait’ll you see what happens over the next couple of weeks. You’re going to see a very secure border,” he said. “You just watch.”

BEIJING – China’s army will take action”at any cost” to foil attempts to separate the self-ruled island of Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its own, the country’s defense minister said on Thursday.

Beijing has been infuriated by recent U.S. sanctions on its military, one of a growing number of flashpoints in ties with Washington that include a bitter trade war, Taiwan and China’s increasingly muscular military posture in the South China Sea.

On Monday, the United States sent two warships through the Taiwan Strait in the second such operation this year and the latest in a series of gestures made by the White House in support of democratic Taiwan.

“The Taiwan issue is related to China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and touches upon China’s core interests,” Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe said at the opening of the Xiangshan Forum in Beijing, which China styles as its answer to the annual Shangri-La Dialogue security forum in Singapore.

“On this issue, it is extremely dangerous to repeatedly challenge China’s bottom line. If someone tries to separate out Taiwan (from China), China’s army will take the necessary actions at any cost.”

China-Taiwan relations have deteriorated since the island’s President Tsai Ing-wen, of the independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party, swept to power in 2016.

Beijing, which has never renounced the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control, has also viewed U.S. overtures toward the island with alarm, such as a new de facto embassy there and passage of a law to encourage visits by U.S. officials.

China’s military ties with the United States are important and sensitive, Wei said, adding that China will never give up an inch of its territory.

Beijing opposed displays of strength and provocation in the South China Sea by “nations from outside the region” carried out under the pretense of protecting freedom of flight and navigation, he added.

The world’s two largest economies needed to deepen high-level ties so as to navigate tension and rein in the risk of inadvertent conflict, U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told his Chinese counterpart last week.

Mattis saw firsthand last month how mounting Sino-U.S. friction can undermine military contacts, when Beijing upended plans for him to meet Wei in October.

China has been angered by the U.S. sanctions on its military for buying weapons from Russia, and by what Beijing sees as stepped-up U.S. support for democratic Taiwan, which it claims as sacred territory.

China has also expressed concern after U.S. President Donald Trump said Washington would withdraw from a landmark Cold War-era treaty that eliminated nuclear missiles from Europe because Russia was violating the pact.

China is not a party to that treaty, but Trump has also suggested Beijing’s military strength played a role in his decision, which China has described as “completely wrong”.

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration has signaled a new phase in its confrontation with Iran, threatening to retaliate for attacks by Iranian-backed militants in Iraq, even as it moves to avoid a potentially messy public split with allies over President Trump’s withdrawal from the nuclear deal.

Days after rocket strikes near American diplomatic facilities in Baghdad and Basra, the White House blamed Shia militia groups on Wednesday and said, “Iran did not act to stop these attacks by its proxies in Iraq, which it has supported with funding, training and weapons.”

The statement came two weeks before Mr. Trump and Iran’s president, Hassan Rouhani, are both scheduled to attend the yearly meeting of the United Nations General Assembly, and it underscores Mr. Trump’s determination to raise pressure on the Iranian leadership.

Mr. Trump had planned to use a session of the Security Council, which he is presiding over, to dramatize Iran’s malign behavior throughout the Middle East. But with aides and European allies warning that Iran could exploit the meeting to spotlight Western division over the nuclear deal, the White House has broadened the agenda to nonproliferation, a less loaded theme.

Taken together, these two moves point to the challenge facing the Trump administration as it tries to shift the focus from the agreement brokered by Mr. Trump’s predecessor, Barack Obama, to Iran’s destabilizing actions in Iraq, Syria, Yemen and Lebanon.

“They haven’t done a good job of articulating what their strategy is,” said Karim Sadjadpour, an expert on Iran at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

The administration, he said, still appeared split between hard-liners who want to bring the regime to its knees and others who are open to some kind of grand bargain. At times, that group seems to include Mr. Trump himself. He has more than once expressed a willingness to meet with Mr. Rouhani, an invitation the Iranian leader has yet to accept.

The president has boasted that his decision to abandon the nuclear deal, and reimpose sanctions on Iran, had already forced the Iranian leadership to curb its behavior in the region. “Iran is not the same country that it was a few months ago,” he said in June. “They’re a much, much different group of leaders.”

Yet the White House’s latest statement suggests the threat from Iran has swelled rather than subsided. While the rocket attacks by Shia militias caused no American casualties or property damage, they demonstrated the extent to which Iran’s influence has paralyzed its neighbor since Iraq held parliamentary elections in May that failed to produce a government.

The administration has compiled a list of statistics to show Iran’s continued funding of extremist groups throughout the Middle East: $700 million to Hezbollah in Lebanon; more than $100 million a year to Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad; at least $16 billion to allies and proxies in Syria, Lebanon and Iraq.

Iran’s increased aggressiveness in Iraq, several experts said, is a direct response to the economic campaign that Mr. Trump is waging against Iran’s government. For now, Iran’s leaders have decided to remain in the nuclear deal, even with the sting of the sanctions. Experts say they are gambling that Mr. Trump will either be crippled by Republican losses in the midterm elections in November or swept out of office in 2020 — or both.

But as Robert Malley, who helped negotiate the Iran deal in the Obama administration, put it: “If the Trump administration is declaring economic war on them, they will react in some way. One of the ways is to radicalize their foreign policy, particularly in Iraq.”

Beyond warning that “America will respond swiftly and decisively in defense of American lives,” the White House offered no details about how the United States would retaliate against Iran for the attacks in Iraq. Officials at the Defense Department said there were no increased military preparations. Striking back, they warned, could provoke asymmetric attacks against American military and civilians by Iranian proxies elsewhere.

A Pentagon spokesman, Cmdr. Sean Robertson, referred all questions to the White House.

When Defense Secretary Jim Mattis served as commander of the military’s Central Command during the Obama administration, he blamed Iran for deadly attacks by Shia militias in Iraq. He advocated confronting Iran, a position that put him at odds with Mr. Obama, who was then trying to engage Iran diplomatically.

In the Trump administration, however, Mr. Mattis has taken a more moderate line. He joined former Secretary of State Rex W. Tillerson in trying to persuade Mr. Trump not to leave the nuclear deal, and has used more measured language.

Moreover, the situation in Iraq is complicated; Iran, too, has been a target of violent protests. In the southern city of Basra, where rockets struck an airport complex that houses the United States Consulate, crowds ransacked and burned the Iranian Consulate. Some people have accused the United States or Saudi Arabia of being behind that attack.

The White House statement, some officials said, was mostly intended to send Iran a signal, not unlike in February 2017, when Mr. Trump’s first national security adviser, Michael T. Flynn, responded to the launch of an Iranian ballistic missile by saying, “As of today, we are officially putting Iran on notice.”

It also sets the stage for Mr. Trump’s appearance at the United Nations, his first since he abandoned the nuclear deal. The president had planned to devote an entire session of the Security Council to Iran, officials said, a prospect that rattled some of his aides and European officials, who envisioned the diplomatic equivalent of his TV show, “The Apprentice.”

Among those was John R. Bolton, Mr. Trump’s national security adviser who once served as ambassador to the United Nations. Mr. Bolton, several officials said, made the case that focusing only on Iran would give Iran and Russia a platform to broadcast an anti-American message.

By broadening the agenda to nonproliferation, Mr. Trump can talk about the status of his nuclear negotiations with North Korea and about the use of chemical weapons by Bashar al-Assad’s government in Syria — a topic Britain wanted to raise in the Security Council.

In doing so, Mr. Trump will be following in the footsteps of his predecessor. Mr. Obama made nonproliferation the theme of the first Security Council meeting he oversaw in 2009. He won passage of a resolution that was meant to make it more difficult for countries like Iran and North Korea to turn peaceful nuclear programs into weapons projects.

A day later, the United States, Britain and France revealed intelligence that showed that Iran was building a secret uranium enrichment facility in a mountainside near the holy city of Qum.

The smoke is starting to billow from three well-worn hot spots.

First, there is Idlib province in northern Syria, on the Turkish border, home to 3 million civilians—half of them refugees displaced by war from other parts of the country—and roughly 70,000 anti-regime rebels, many of them jihadis. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has vowed to wipe out all anti-regime forces in air and ground campaigns that will unavoidably kill thousands of civilians, a fact that hasn’t bothered him in previous assaults. His allies, the Russians and Iranians, say they will help, and in fact the bombing has begun.

Meanwhile, Turkey has set up watchtowers within Idlib and warned Assad against an incursion, saying that crossing into Idlib would constitute a “red line,” though it’s unclear what that means. At the same time, the Turks have closed their border to refugees or jihadis who are seeking to flee the impending mayhem.

Deborah Amos, a veteran Middle East reporter for NPR, calls the coming clash “the last worst battle of the war.” Idlib, she said in an email, is “the final refuge for civilians forced out of Aleppo, Douma, and Ghouta,” and, if Assad’s plans are played out, it will likely be the site of “a catastrophic humanitarian crisis.”

On Monday, President Trump tweeted:

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 3, 2018

It was a bizarre missive. Telling Assad that he must not “recklessly” attack Idlib suggests that it might be all right to attack the province deliberatively. And his kicker (“Don’t let that happen!”) is the cry of an onlooker, as if the United States has no stake in what’s about to happen, no political or military influence to tilt the course of events.

In fact, we don’t have much influence and never had very much, even when whole divisions of U.S. armed forces prowled the Middle East and seasoned commanders and diplomats rallied to dampen, deter, or defuse acts of aggression. The Trump administration’s recent efforts have been ephemeral at best. Joshua Landis, professor of Middle East studies at the University of Oklahoma and a noted Syria specialist, said in an email, “The U.S. made similar statements before the Deraa offensive—the last province to fall several months ago—but did nothing when Syria and Russia pushed ahead.”

Whether or not the dilemmas are resolved, the prognosis is grim.

In the region’s previous eruptions, outside powers—whether the United States, Russia, the United Nations, the Arab League, or some combination of actors—have sometimes tried to step in to quell the violence. Now these powers have limited leverage or mixed motives. Turkey might seem to be an obvious object of diplomatic pressure, either to open its borders or to prepare to repel the Syrian-Russian assault. But its relations with NATO allies are frayed, its appetite for refugees is nil, and it considers Russia a bourgeoning ally. That new relationship might prove productive in broaching a peaceful settlement, but, as Landis has tweeted, the two countries’ interests are at odds in this conflict: Russia wants Assad to win, and the battle of Idlib might put him over the top; Turkey has no love for the jihadis, but it wants above all to keep hundreds of thousands more Syrians—whatever their affiliations or lack thereof—from pouring across its border.

Whether or not the dilemmas are resolved, the prognosis is grim.

The second site of looming conflict is Iraq—or, more precisely, Iran’s growing influence of, and expansion into, Iraq. On Friday, Reuters reported that Iran is supplying ballistic missiles to its allied Shiite militias in Iraq. These missiles have the range to strike Israel, Saudi Arabia, and U.S. forces in the region.

It could well be that the motive here is strictly to deter those countries from attacking Iran. (If they strike Iran, Iran strikes them.) But that doesn’t make the situation any less fraught with danger. The annals of history are blood-soaked with nations brandishing offensive weapons for defensive purposes, then getting clobbered or otherwise sucked into a war because some opposing nation interprets the situation differently.

But there’s something strange about this story: As of mid-afternoon Tuesday, Reuters remains the only news agency to report the presence of the missiles. Spokespeople for the Iraqi government denounce the story as “without evidence” but stop short of denying it outright. The Iranians have said nothing, but whether or not the story is true, they might want the world to believe it is in order to give them a free deterrent. (They should be careful, though: In 2002–03, Saddam Hussein helped spread the myth that he had weapons of mass destruction, believing it would deter the Americans from invading; the ploy backfired, to say the least.)

This leads to the region’s third cauldron of conflict: It is not far-fetched to wonder if the story is untrue and, if that turns out to be the case, to speculate that the Israelis planted it in order to provide a pretext for attacking Iran’s military sites in Iraq—of which there are many, regardless of whether they harbor ballistic missiles.

Several news agencies have reported in recent days that Israel is preparing to launch such attacks. Israel has long been concerned about the emergence of a “Shiite crescent,” one contiguous landmass from Iran through Iraq to Syria and perhaps beyond. The presence of ballistic missiles in Iraq—with the range to hit Israel and Saudi Arabia—might inflame those fears.

In that sense, it doesn’t matter whether the story about Iranian missiles in Iraq is true: If it is true, it may prompt a preemptive strike by Israel; if it isn’t true, it may help legitimize a preventive strike by Israel, in anticipation of such deliveries.

The question is whether, given the American presence in Iraq, Israel would go this far without Washington’s permission. According to Israel’s public broadcast network KAN, U.S. officials have flashed Tel Aviv a big red light, telling Israeli defense officials, “Leave Iraq to us.”

It is not clear from this report whether the big stoplight that was flashed came from the Pentagon, the State Department, or the White House—or whether Trump might be persuaded by his friend, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to change the light to green.

How Trump deals with the array of renewed conflicts erupting in the region is another matter entirely. His administration has no policy beyond vague bromides, no strategy by even the loosest definition of that word, and no diplomatic tactics up its sleeve. If past crises are precedent, it is unlikely that the National Security Council has held a Cabinet-level meeting on the issues at hand.

Juicy excerpts from Bob Woodward’s new book, Fear: Trump in the White House, appeared in Tuesday’s Washington Post. The revelations are gripping, though not terribly surprising: Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis told a friend that Trump has the understanding of “a fifth- or sixth-grader.” White House chief of staff John Kelly described him as “unhinged” and “an idiot.” A few aides took dangerous policy papers off his desk to keep him from signing them. And many of these remarks were prompted by fairly simple matters. The Middle East is the opposite of simple. Achieving peace is almost impossible (and Trump thought it would be so easy, he gave the portfolio to Jared Kushner).

In most cases, the best the United States—or any outside power—can do is to blow out a few of the matches lighting up the landscape. Even really smart people who know what they’re doing have a hard time of it. An unhinged idiot with the mentality of a sixth-grader should be kept away. Let him play golf as often as he wants.
