]]> LONDON – Tourists, shoppers and office workers on a busy London street on an ordinary weekday found themselves part of a digital identity check as live facial recognition cameras scanned faces against a police watch list.

The operation was an example of a technology that the Metropolitan Police say is transforming policing, helping officers arrest around 2,500 wanted people since the start of 2024, including suspects accused of violent and sexual offences.

Critics, however, say live facial recognition undermines the presumption of innocence underpinning British law by treating every passer-by as a potential suspect.

]]> COUNTER-TERROR cops are leading the investigation into a suspected hate attack which saw masked arsonists torch four Jewish ambulances.

The charred vehicles – belonging to volunteer emergency service Hatzola – were set ablaze in the early hours in Golders Green in North London, one of Britain’s biggest Jewish communities.

Terrified residents were awakened by a series of loud explosions as flames ripped through the ambulances parked outside a synagogue.

Six fire engines and 40 firefighters rushed to the scene at around 1.45am today before alerting police, who quickly launched a probe.

]]> More than 100,000 anti-immigration protesters marched in London Saturday at a rally organised by far-right figure Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, popularly known as Tommy Robinson. Police made 25 arrests after some of the attendees clashed with law enforcement officers, leaving more than two dozen injured.

As many as 150,000 protesters marched through central London on Saturday for a demonstration organised by the anti-immigrant and anti-Islam activist Tommy Robinson.

The rally was met by a smaller “Stand Up to Racism”, following a highly charged summer in Britain that has seen protests over immigration and free speech.

Police estimated that 110,000 and 150,000 people attended the anti-immigration rally, dwarfing the 5,000-strong counter protest.

]]> A shop security guard has described how he helped save an 11-year-old girl as she was being attacked by a knifeman in London’s Leicester Square.

In a statement, the Met Police said a 32-year-old man had been arrested and taken into custody after the girl and her 34-year-old mother were stabbed.

Abdullah, 29, who works at TWG tea in Leicester Square, said he intervened to stop the attacker and, with help from colleagues, gave first aid to the child.

The Met said it was “not looking for anyone else” in connection with the attack and does not believe the victims knew their attacker. It also said at this stage there was no suggestion the stabbing was terror-related.

]]> A major London landmark will undergo a controversial revamp after a Muslim billionaire won his bid to build a place of prayer.

A Muslim billionaire has won permission to turn a major London landmark into a mosque.

Mega-rich Asif Aziz, 56, known as Mr West End, will take over the Trocadero in the centre of the capital, The Sun reports.

He had applied to build a 1000-person capacity mosque but plans were withdrawn because of backlash from residents.

But now Westminster Council has approved a three-storey mosque for 390 worshippers, The Daily Mail reported on Sunday.

It’s thought it will be called “Piccadilly Prayer Space” and could be open within months.

A Metropolitan Police officer has been revealed as one of Britain’s most prolific sex offenders after he admitted dozens of rapes and sexual offences following attacks on 12 women.

PC David Carrick – who was known to his colleagues as “B*****d Dave” – entered guilty pleas when he appeared at London’s Southwark Crown Court on Monday.

He admitted 49 charges – including 24 rape counts – for crimes committed over an 18-year period.

The charges relate to the rape of nine different women, but some are multiple incident counts, meaning they relate to more than 80 sexual offences, including at least 48 rapes.

]]> British prosecutors declared recently that certain Bible passages are “no longer appropriate” to be uttered in public.

“There are references in the bible which are simply no longer appropriate in modern society and which would be deemed offensive if stated in public,” lawyers from the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) told the court.

The statement occurred in the course of CPS’ prosecution of street preacher John Dunn for the alleged crime of offending two lesbians by quoting Scripture to them.

Despite having lost his voice box to throat cancer, Dunn, 55, preaches regularly on the streets of Swindon, a town in southwestern England.
