Western allies are no longer imposing any restrictions on the use of long-range weapons delivered to Ukraine for Kyiv against Russian military targets, the German chancellor said on Monday.

Western allies are not imposing any range restrictions on the use of long-range weapons delivered to Ukraine against Russian military targets, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Monday.

Merz pointed out that the restrictions have been lifted not only on German weapons.

“There are no longer any restrictions on the range of weapons delivered to Ukraine, neither by the UK, France, nor us. There are no restrictions by the US either,” he said during a discussion forum organised by the public broadcaster, WDR.

He stated that Ukraine can now “defend itself, for example, by attacking military facilities in Russia.”

Ukraine fires US-supplied longer-range missiles into Russia, Moscow says

Ukraine has fired US-supplied longer-range missiles at Russian territory for the first time, the Russian government said, a day after Washington gave its permission for such attacks.

US officials also confirmed use of the Army Tactical Missile System (Atacms) to CBS news, the BBC’s US partner. Ukraine has not commented.

Russia’s defence ministry said the strike targeted the Bryansk region bordering Ukraine to the north on Tuesday morning.

Five missiles were shot down and one damaged, with its fragments causing a fire at a military facility in the region, the ministry said.

Russia’s foreign minister Sergey Lavrov accused Washington of trying to escalate the conflict.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Ukraine is delaying its long-awaited counteroffensive against Russia’s occupying forces, saying that while such a campaign would succeed, too many of his troops’ lives would be lost

KYIV, Ukraine — President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in remarks broadcast Thursday that Kyiv is delaying its long-awaited counteroffensive against Russia’s occupying forces because Ukraine lacks enough Western weapons to succeed without suffering too many casualties.

His remarks, in an interview with European broadcasters, were aired shortly before Britain said it has sent Ukraine air-launched cruise missiles that would allow pilots to extend their reach farther than possibly any other weapon in their arsenal, to locations deep behind the front line.

A Ukrainian counteroffensive against Russia’s more than 14-month-old invasion has been expected as winter turned to spring, and Zelenskyy said in an interview that “we can go forward and be successful,” according to the BBC.

“But we’d lose a lot of people. I think that’s unacceptable,” he was quoted as saying in the interview, conducted in Kyiv with public service broadcasters who are members of Eurovision News, including the BBC.

“So we need to wait. We still need a bit more time,” Zelenskyy was quoted as saying. “In terms of equipment, not everything has arrived yet.”
